My boot partition is VFAT. For some reason the factory u-boot on the
Dreamplug does not support EXT; I've always assumed that this was
because the Sheevaplug u-boot had problems with EXT (it couldn't load a
file if any part of it was more the 2Gb from the start of the
partition).

Is your boot partition EXT or VFAT?
Using a GuruPlug Server Plus I have seen that when using some kernels
as well. Oddly some will boot from VFAT '/boot' only, while others will
boot from EXT. They are loaded fine in each case, and only seem to fail
when booting (or no other output is given).
I now use a VFAT partition for '/boot' and have not had an issue since.
