Hello,

 I have an Advent Vega, which costs 200 GBP and has a NVidia tegra and a
full size USB A port and HDMI port.

I would be willing to test / work on a Fedora bulid for such a device.

Maybe you have done some research/tests on the Advent Vega already? If
so, maybe you can answer some of the following questions?
- Is it possible to use a serial-console and/or attach a JTAG debugger?
- Are all required drivers available in the mainline Linux kernel?
- Does is require any non-public Xorg drivers (display, touch, ..)?
- Can it boot from a non-internal (SD, USB-stick, ...) storage?

Some colleagues/friends/etc would like to do some work for a Fedora
Tablet edition, any details or pointers on what hardware is easy to use
and develop on is much appreciated. When something serious takes off,
this list will likely be one of the main communication channels.

Niels,
I have done a small amount of research a while ago with the intention of
delving in deeper into it. However my life got in the way as I am currently
moving out!

In response to your questions, which I can not answer very well!

1. I have heard no mention of JTAG or similar for the Vega, but this doesn't
mean it doesn't exist!!
2. With regards to drivers I havent got around to building my own Ubuntu
rootfs for my Vega so I don't know however there is this build:

which may be able to tell you something!
3. It is possible to boot off of the microSD slot, I doubt it could be
booted off the USB port though.


This tablet has the advantage of being cheap and powered by the current
generation hardware (Tegra 2), but is let down by its display.
The reason I joined this list was because I wanted to see the feasibility of
creating a Fedora 15 Tablet edition (wanted Gnome 3), so I would be willing
to help though I have a lot to learn!!

Hi Stuart!

Many thanks for the details. As the tablet can boot from microSD without
too much trouble, it seems like a nice candidate for testing :)

Is there an opensource accelerated video driver for the tegra2 yet?

Advice for tablets to run Fedora ARM on?

Here i will answer my own question. Apparently the MeeGo project is  
working with compulabs makers of the tegra2 based trimslice. And they  
have an accelerated hardfp version of the tegra X video driver.

While not opensource, I suppose with some careful talking it would be  
possible to at least have the accelerated X driver that will work on  
the Vega. Im not sure exactly how gnome3 gets optimized though.
