Someone interested in Pandaboard ES?

Hello,
Recently I tried F21 on that board. The result was a bit disappointing...

Apperently Fedora has several issues with that hardware:
- thermal shutdown, after message something like "kernel trap/thermal
zone/core0"
- wlcore module error
- some other error, possibly related to swap module /Need to redo testing
here, not captured on logs/

What do You think? What is advisable to do /if any/ in this situation?
I have some time, maybe can provide ssh/vnc access, if somebody is
interested to examine issues.
However, in that case we probably have to do something with that termal
shutdown.
I'm not experienced with specific kernel things that maybe involved.

I'm running F-21 on two revisions of the Panda-ES without issues. I'm
running one with a minimal install and one with XFCE.

I've not seen any errors around thermal errors even when compiling
things. Have you tried installing the kernel-tools package and running
the tmon util? My devices sit at around 30 degrees at idle.

The wlcore module error is a known issue. I black list them as I don't
use wireless. The chip needs a userspace util called uim to put the
chip into the right mode, also the patches to support DeviceTree
haven't landed upstream. In general the WiLink wireless drivers aren't
in a great state.

I create a file called:
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-wlcore.conf
And add the following two lines:
blacklist wl12xx
blacklist wlcore

I can't help with the other error without more information. Overall
with F-21 GA the Panda-ES does work relatively well in my experience.
There's certainly some improvements to be made but it's generally very
usable with  XFCE or as a minimal install system.

Thank You fo reply, Peter!

I'have installed kernel-tools and banned wlcore. Than reboot before make
new logs.
Tmon indicates ~50C at Idle and goes 79 with little load. Based on previous
expiriance it can't survive full system update, without termal shutdown.

Last time I forgot to mention that mouse is working badly, but think that
this is not important now. I use XFCE edition of F21. Power adapter is 2250
mA and I think that is OK also.

Is it really idle?  Something seems to be making him abnormally hot.

Any clues in top or cat /proc/interrupts?

It's be nice if there was some interrupt going nuts we could see in /proc/interrupts
making execessive latency.

How about the U-Boot / MLO pieces?  They have nasty deps like gpu clock state and default
GPIO state.

If the only clue is excess heat it can be something like a contended SoC GPIO.

I think about that. I belive it is not related to interrupts or overload,
because the system responce is very good. Also htop reported just a few
percent load on both cores. Which is OK for XFCE, browser and several
Terminals.
I will make new logs soon.

I didn't understand U-Boot and MLO yet. But loader/configuration is stock
Fedora one.
It happen on two clean F21 installations on different flash cards.
Before Fedora I tested Arch Linux Arm. Could that changed some firmware
configuration? Is it a way to reset?

I doubt that too. I didn't used GPIO's and board is as clean as new.
Unless
it is defective.

My guess for now is that software somehow toggle wrong voltage/frequency.
Is it a way to directly check that?

Maybe I will test with some old software that panda advertises, to see what
will happen than. But don't know when, because it can take some more time.

Hi again,
I make some more experiments to see what is going on.

The problem with mouse seems to be related with that specific model. When
using other mouse it work perfect.
Then I test with no ethernet, keyboard and mouse. The problem with
overheating still persist. Processor load seem to be low and normal.
Last I noticed that eth0 mac address changes between restart. Is there a
way to make it permanent?

Sorry for the late response on this one.

My Panda-ES sits at idle around 20C using tmon so the temp is kind of
strange. The Logitech Razor mouse is much higher precision so will
generate a lot more data. If it's still a problem you might want to
look at getting a heat sink to stick on the SoC.

BTW I'll have a fixed kernel for 3.18+ issues shortly.
