Yeah, I would also prefer to use something written in python but I agree
that an actively maintained project is more important. There are a couple
forks of the django based URL shortener that James mentioned that have
been updated more recently.

Another PHP based project that is very active right now and might be a
better choice is yourls (
http://code.google.com/p/yourls/).
I'm planning to set up some of these on a local system today to get a
better handle on the following questions:
1. How difficult are they to set up
1. How well designed is the API - will it fit our needs?
1. How hard would it be to package?
