OpenStack Feature page
by Mark McLoughlin
Hey,
Robyn suggested that, given the recent progress, we should put OpenStack
forward as a Fedora 16. It would be a very late exception, so we'll need
to make a good case to FESCo.
I've drafted an initial feature page:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/OpenStack
David, Angus and Matt - please feel free to add yourselves as owners.
I'm not gonna pull this off without your help! :-)
Next thing we're going to have to do is file a ticket with FESCo like
the Java7 one:
https://fedorahosted.org/fesco/ticket/663
Cheers,
Mark.

Aeolus on F15 screencast (thanks, Mo!) and MY CHALLENGE TO YOU
by Robyn Bergeron
Just thought I'd draw some love and attention to the recent screencast
mmorsi put together showing Aeolus on F15:
Blog post here - http://mo.morsi.org/blog/node/343
Screencast here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5Yb7I4M6mo
Handily, he's also made a nice how-to-screencast blog post:
http://mo.morsi.org/blog/node/345
This, as you might have guessed by now, leads to... MY CHALLENGE TO YOU,
Cloud SIG friends:
F16 is due out in mere months - which means press is going to start
focusing in on what's new in Fedora. If F15 press was any indication
(ooh! Shiny Cloud Things!), I expect we'll be drawing more attention
with the additional cloud pieces we now have. I think that running a
mini-series of blogposts featuring screencasts of some of our Cloudy
Features would be excellent.
If we can get at least three more screencasts on any of the following
topics:
* pacemaker-cloud
* sheepdog
* condor-cloud
* HekaFS
* Additional cloudy things in Fedora that aren't features or are past
features (BoxGrinder, OpenStack, Fedora on EC2)
... I will make MY OWN SCREENCAST of myself attempting to do Something
Technical and Cloud-Related, probably along the lines of "Will it
Blend?" but titled, "Can She Cloud?" ... or something like that. In
fact, I might just leave it to everyone else's discretion what it is
that I have to do. (Bounded by the line of, IT HAS TO BE CLOUD RELATED,
of course.) Which could be fun. Or utterly embarrassing. But hopefully
educational in some way. But first, there must be Other Screencasts.
Do I hear any volunteers willing to make a screencast yet? :)

OpenStack in EPEL
by Matt Domsch
Quick show of hands: who cares about seeing OpenStack be in EPEL?
I've been building on the excellent work that Mirantis, then Mark McLoughlin has been doing to get OpenStack components built in rawhide, and maybe (cross your fingers) F16. The same packages, with small tweaks, also work on RHEL.
Status here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/OpenStack#OpenStack_in_EPEL
Now, before I go any further: who is with me? Is there pent-up user demand for OpenStack on RHEL, or service providers who are loyal to the RHEL family who would benefit from having the packages in EPEL? Or do we expect most OpenStack users to simply use Ubuntu/Canonical or a Citrix distribution thereof? I don't want to push packages that are likely to go unused.
Thanks,
Matt

Cloud Test Day
by Mark McLoughlin
Hey,
Since there's so much cloud activity in F-16, perhaps we should organize
a test day that covers all the various cloud bits?
Looking at the schedule:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Fedora_16_test_days
I guess there's two options:
1) Ask the virt folks very nicely whether they wouldn't mind us
sharing their slot on 2011-09-15
2) Book the 2011-10-20 slot
Thoughts?
Cheers,
Mark.

OpenStack in Fedora 15
by Robert Knight
As I have reported in the Wiki, there are troubles with the SysV init
scripts on Fedora 15. The defect is caused by the change in F15 to a
tmpfs for /var/run. Thus, the target directory for the pid's does not
survive a reboot. So, some way is needed to (re-)create /var/run/glance
and /var/run/nova or the startup scripts need to be changed to just put
the pid's directly into /var/run, which will be there. Does anyone know
whether there is a standard resolution to this?
The Short-Description and Description fields in the SysV init script for
openstack-glance-registry (as well as the other comments) is incorrect.
The systemd packaging guidelines say that the systemd unit files should
be sent back upstream. Does anyone know whether upstream would accept this?

Fedora EC2 image build instructions
by Justin Forbes
A walkthrough has been posted with instructions for building your own
Fedora based EC2 images (both S3 and EBS backed) on the Fedora Wiki:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Cloud_SIG/EC2_Creation
As a part of this, appliance definition files have been added to the
cloud-kickstarts git repository fedorahosted.org:
http://git.fedorahosted.org/git/?p=cloud-kickstarts.git
While the current plan is to move official Fedora image generation to
koji, we know that most users are not able to build images in koji. We
wanted to ensure that there was a process by which the community could
build EC2 images to meet their needs. As such, we will continue to
maintain the Fedora appliance definition files with each release. The
goal is to keep the appliance file as close to the official images as
possible (read stripped down), so that you can add what you need and not
worry about pulling in a lot of things you don't need. You can expect
the appliance definition files for each release to appear at roughly the
time of the alpha spin.
We welcome feedback, comments, patches, etc. on both the documentation,
and the supported appliance definitions.
Thanks,
Justin
