Windows install with Cobbler

Has anyone been successful in installing windows using cobbler?  I've
found a few things on the net but nothing definitive.  I need a tool
that will install baseline images on lab boxes of both the linux and
Windows flavors.

My solution for Windows installs was actually to use another system:
http://opsi.org/

Though a bit snarly to get set up, it was actually very nifty once deployed.

You can load up some driver packs which contain tons of NIC and other
common drivers, and they are detected during install. It has a nice
Web interface to control what happens with the client when it boots,
etc. You can also do some primitive package deployment to clients with
it.

I only used this on W2k3 systems, though I believe they support newer
versions of course as well.

Which versions of Windows  are you looking at using?  

Pre Windows Vista are very different than post.  Also server was a bit different than the
client versions.

Are you currently doing any imaging with WAIK?  

Are you imaging/cloneing the systems, or doing a from scratch install.  Cobbler is good
for the later, other systems like FOG/Clonezilla/Ghost may be better for the former.

ps, I'm tempted to try my hand at building up a windows vista/7 pxe installer, more
for my dev lab, as I hate installing windows over and over again but it's the only way
to test a couple of things.  Would anyone else be interested in collaborating?

extract of an existing image.

I have been contemplating using winpe and automated installs. All the tools are available
with windows and the WIAK. Cobbler would use the winpe image to bootstrap.

I discovered the Ultimate Deployment site last week:

It uses RIS for Linux and a bunch of other packages to install Windows 7 
via PXE.  The WIMlib (http://sourceforge.net/projects/wimlib/) 
SourceForge project looks useful for creating images for newer versions 
of Windows that use Windows Deployment Services instead of RIS.

I got the impression that you should be able to use Cobbler plus Samba 
plus RIS for Linux's BINL server to do crude PXE installs.  Streamlining 
importing the Windows distros from DVD and applying service packs and 
device drivers would be much more work.

slipstreaming inst too hard. We have done this for the virtio drivers so they are
available when we build windows on kvm.

There are good tutorials online. Service packs and patches not hard but a lot of work.

Sounds great. I was thinking we would have to add uuid's to cobbler to have the same
input hook as sccm uses for windows.

I've automated Windows Server 2008 installs using cobbler and the
Microsoft Deployment Toolkit. Windows nodes PXE boot into WinPE and
fetch their configuration from a MDT share. MDT doesn't have an API as
far as I know but you can insert machine entries via SQL.
