Linux building is not based on disk images. There are lots of downsides to building
systems this way. Disk geometry changes and maintainability of the build are two.

    The point is if this feature is supported or not by Cobbler. This function is very
usefull in HPC environment and Cobbler could become a standard in HPC if it includes
that.

If not, Daniele, BUILD YOUR OWN TARGET ! That's easy to do !

Cobbler doesn't seem built to work with prebaked disk inages. I think
you're barking up the wrong tree. You might want to take a look at
Openstack ironic. It is now capable of running standalone without any of
the other Openstack goo and is built to deploy prebuilt images to bare
metal via API. It doesn't have a guide I'm aware of, but creating one
should be simple enough.

Only one problem, I am not an expert in OpenStack so install it will take a
lot of time (I don't see a bundle by the way).
On the contrary, for cobbler + clonezilla like, I already have some ideas
and it will be more easy to develop.

It doesn't require Openstack knowledge really as it is a standalone thing
if you choose to run it that way. You just need a box to act as conductor
and database I think.also it's packaged, like the rest of Openstack, by
every major Linux vendor. You just have to add the repo (eg. RDO for
Centos  / Fedora.

Hi Alastair,
    Some image based system adopt P2P mechanism to have multiple source and a multiple
servers installation requires less time than from a single source. Anyway the point is
always if cobbler supports or not the cloning feature, this will be great. There are a lot
of sw that use cloning like clonezilla xcat or system Image. I will continue to use them
if cobbler doesn't support it.
For me is a big miss in Cobbler brut is just my point of view.

    The point is if this feature is supported or not by Cobbler. This function is very
usefull in HPC environment and Cobbler could become a standard in HPC if it includes
that.

Using a clonezilla image you should be able to build an image based system.  I haven't
looked into it deeply but if I recall correctly most of the hooks are there to do it. 

Having built hpc systems in the vfx world, it is way easier to build using installers for
the reasons highlighted earlier as well as when hardware changes within your cluster, it
is easy to get a new one integrated in with a slightly different build or a few changed
config lines to cope with the rewire of say the network or disk addressing.

Our VM builds via kickstart take about 7 mins to build to a 30gb hard disk. How long would
it take to copy a 30gb disk image across a network to a new server? I think much longer.
Also if you have a corruption in the disk image it would get propagated to new builds?
Real server builds take much longer, because of all the boot self tests, especially if you
have a lot of memory.
