Welcome Welcome :)
I met with Remy in January at the WiTNY Conference and I have been
looking into the Outreachy program. I'm interested in getting involved in the open
source community and I noticed that the Outreachy project listed for 2016 is the Fedora
Kernel Tooling Project. However, there are several other links that show other projects.
Currently, the kernel development slot is the one we are focusing on
for Outreachy this round (hopefully we'll get more budget next time to
offer more outreachy slots, stay tuned!), but in addition to
Outreachy, we just applied to be a mentoring organization for Google
Summer of Code this year.
Fedora will find out around 2/29 whether or not our application was
accepted, and how many slots Google will award us this year. After
that, it will be up to students to apply to the project ideas that
interest them, and the admins/mentors will make the final decision on
who is accepted. You can find the timeline/registration/details for
that program at: https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/
I would like to know, is there a link with all the projects available
for round 12 or is the kernel tooling project the only one? Also, is there someone I can
direct all my questions to throughout this process?
In the meantime though, Fedora has a "sorting hat" where you can
discover various paths for getting involved based on your skills and
interests. Just go to http://whatcanidoforfedora.org
, and choose your
own adventure :) Don't be afraid to click through the tree more than
once, so you can see all the different places :)
Our team, the Community Operations Team meets weekly in on Freenode in
#fedora-commops from Noon-1pm EST. You can find some tips/instructions
on using IRC here https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_use_IRC
Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.
Thank YOU for stopping by and introducing yourself, and we're excited
to help you on your journey into Free/Open Source Software development
with Fedora :)
P.S. - We have a badges system http://badges.fedoraproject.org
we keep track of all the contributions folks have made in Fedora,
which we can also use to onboard new members:
If it doesn't make
sense yet, just ask us questions in IRC :)

Subject: Nice To Meet You @ WiTNY
It was a pleasure meeting you at the Women in Tech New York Conference (WiTNY), I
value the knowledge you shared on open source software resources, how to contribute to the
community in order to learn and ultimately advance a career in tech. A quick overview
about myself, I am a recent graduate of the Flatiron School Web Development Fellowship.
Throughout the program I was able to build Ruby on Rails web applications with my new
found knowledge of MVC frameworks, database query interfacing with SQLite, and front-end
technologies like Bootstraps and HTML5/CSS3.
I have been looking into Outreachy, the mentoring program you suggested, and it seems
like a promising opportunity I would definitely like to be a part of. I would also like to
obtain an internship position that allows me to use my creativity, problem solving skills,
and the tech skills I acquired at Flatiron. If you hear of any opportunities, please keep
me in mind. I appreciate your help in advance.
Also for more information about my experience, you can visit my LinkedIn profile or check
out my work on Github. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
