The CoreOS twitter account

[Matthew Miller]

Hey all! The @coreos twitter account is currently unmaintained. However, it
has almost 100,000 followers. As with other assets from the CoreOS purchase,
it's owned by Red Hat. They're willing for it to become a Fedora CoreOS
account, which is think is better than letting it slide into the wilderness
of cyberspace.

Is anyone in the WG interested in picking this up?

Like, actually change the handle? I'm not completely opposed (that retains
the followers, right?), but I'm not sure it's strictly necessary. We'd put
"Fedora" in the username and in the banner.

I second this. Shorter is better. Just Rebrand the name on the account 
with Fedora CoreOS and keep @coreos and the followers as is.

Some thoughts:

- Do we want to try to retain some following from the old account? 
    - I think yes!

- Do we want to keep @coreos as the handle?
    - I prefer @FedoraCoreOS. We have a bit of a problem with conflating
"CoreOS"
      already and taking advantage of opportunities to minimize that would be ideal.
      Also this would prevent any conflict if other "CoreOS" derivatives pop up
in
      the future.

- Can we keep followers and rename account?
    - I have no idea :). We'd need to flesh out what's possible.

Maybe let's get together at some point and try to figure out what our best path
forward is on this.

I'll defer to everyone else, but:

1) shorter is better in pretty much every way possible

2) it doesn't hurt for us to take advantage of being the derivative actually
   entitled to use the name. There shouldn't be any conflict because they
   shouldn't try to cause one.

If we renamed coreos to fedoracoreos, we'd still keep the coreos
followers. To get the existing fedoracoreos followers, we'd have to
ask them to follow coreos. Fortunately, there's only 77 of them! :)

As for conflation, there are only two OSes called CoreOS right now --
Fedora CoreOS and RHEL CoreOS, and they both stem from the same
project.

I like the idea of keeping Fedora in the handle, but the shortness is
awful nice, and the name attached to the handle can still be Fedora
CoreOS.

At last week's meeting, we talked about potentially using @CoreOS as
an account for Fedora CoreOS, which would mean the (large) current
@CoreOS following would start receiving tweets they may or may not be
interested in. I took an action to look into running a Twitter poll on
the account to gather data about whether followers would be interested
in receiving Fedora CoreOS tweets.

We could run a poll like the following (wording changes welcome):

Fedora CoreOS is the official successor to CoreOS Container Linux, and
the upstream project behind Red Hat CoreOS. We're considering using
this account to share news and updates about Fedora CoreOS. Would
followers of this account find these sorts of tweets worthwhile?

1. Yes, I'm interested in seeing Fedora CoreOS tweets from this account.
2. No, I'm not interested in seeing Fedora CoreOS tweets from this account.

We could protect the account's tweets during the poll, to ensure that
only people who'd be impacted would vote.

As I mentioned during the IRC meeting, I'm not very positive with
this proposal for three reasons:
 1. re-purposing social-media pages is a dark-pattern
 2. those followers did not subscribe to anything FCOS-related
 3. "coreos" is already a confusing term

Regarding point 1, this "re-purpose the account in order to keep
followers" is a bit sketchy, more than what I'm comfortable with.
In pretty much all social-media contexts it is considered a
dark-pattern and generally frowned upon, see for example
https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-46442029.

Regarding point 2, my (personal) feeling is that most followers there
came for a mix of Kubernetes, Prometheus, Tectonic, etcd, Go, and
k8s-operators (in that order). Even before the acquisition, interest
and news related to those topics dwarfed the standalone OS (Container
Linux).
If there is an interest in keeping the account alive, OCP 4.x news are
the closest topics.

Regarding point 3, this confusion is already actively painful for FCOS
users and RH customers. At this point we've spent years trying to teach
people how to differentiate between "Fedora CoreOS", "RHEL CoreOS",
"OCP
4.x" and "kubernetes operators". I'd rather not go back and re-ignite
the confusion.

Hi all,

+1 from me to keep the coreos account focused on OCP and OKD announcements
(even if it's mostly retweets) and major Fedora CoreOS changes (again,
retweets).
I think it would make sense to keep the fedoracoreos account for bi-weekly
release announcements and general changes.

is when an account for a popular film or something gets taken over by an
unrelated YouTube channel. Or, in your BBC example, local community groups
being purchased by corporations. This isn't that -- Fedora CoreOS is the
successor to CoreOS Container Linux.

Apologies, there was no intention to sound harsh nor send accusations to
anyone involved in the process.
In the context of the rest of the email, this was an expression of the
fact that the account (and most of followers) were not really there
for OS bits, but for the larger ecosystem where the company was acting.
In that sense, a good chunk of users would be redirected. They may find
the new thing still related to their interests to some degree, that's
true.

For a better gauge of this, compare with the numbers on
https://twitter.com/CoreOSsecurity which indeed was mainly used for OS
(security) tweets/announcements.

I'll certainly follow if that's the direction that marketing folks
think it's better. However, every single place where we hardcode the
"coreos" label to any specific meaning from the list above makes
the topic more difficult to explain, as it is common when having
exceptions to shared definitions.
In my experience so far, it helped keeping the message clear with
"CoreOS was a company, it used to sell an OS product which does not
exist anymore, but a project similar-in-spirit is Fedora CoreOS".

All of the above are just my two cents from past experiences.
I'm usually not directly involved in marketing and I lack specific
knowledge on the topic. I'll happily defer to the decisions of those
who have better insights on this.

Just my two cents, but when I used to follow @coreos (before it was
retired), I was there for the container OS, CoreOS. I think the switch
to the Container Linux name came about one year before the
acquisition. But that's just me and my impressions/expectations as a
follower. This is why it could be good to ask the current followers.

Turning over the former corporate account to the upstream is a path
that various other RH acquisitions has used, ceph, gluster, manageiq,
are the first that come to mind. If I understand correctly, the
alternative is letting the account be dead/historical. There have been
four tweets this year: one about fedora coreos, two about container
linux eol, and one announcing the retirement of the account.
