fedora project projects
by Matthew Miller
In going through the project structure wiki, I've come across a thing
I've always thought a little funny. Fedora Project is an umbrella term,
and underneath that, we have an official thing called a ... Project.
Does anyone object to consistently referring to these as, instead,
Subprojects?
Additionally, while <https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Defining_projects>
has a formal procedure for these subprojects, we haven't particularly
followed up on things like "Projects at this stage are expected to
provide regular progress reports and to maintain an active state." As
we were talking about having some of the Council meetings being
reporting-focused, I think this might be a natural fit for bringing
reality in line with the documentation.
On the other hand, the section on SIGs focuses on the path to becoming
a full Project Project, while the praxis is really captured in the last
sentences: "It is possible for SIGs to exist indefinitely in this
manner if the contributors feel there is no need for official project
status. Indeed, many SIGs are sufficiently narrow in focus that they do
not require project status to fulfill their missions." Here, I think
it'd be better to rewrite this to put the SIGs-as-they-are aspect first
and the incubator possibility as second.
And then, of course, there's no mention of the Fedora.next structure
here at all. The Working Groups we established are in many ways
effectively each Subprojects (and the standards they're meant to be
held to are similar); should they be considered as part of that, or as
something distinct?

Next meeting! Monday March 16th at 17:00 UTC, #fedora-meeting
by Matthew Miller
Hi everyone! The first council IRC meeting went well, and while I still
hope to not be meeting-driven overall, it looks like we have some
momentum going and there was interest in doing it again sooner rather
than later, so we will have a second meeting this coming Monday, March
16th, at 17:00 UTC (1pm US/Eastern). This will again be an IRC meeting
in the #fedora-meeting channel on Freenode.
I'll send out an agenda Monday morning -- if you have items you want on
that agenda, reply here. We discussed eventually going to a cadence of
alternating between ongoing work items and reports / presentations on
specific topics and subprojects. That seems like a great plan to me and
I'll work on figuring out the specifics.
I'd like to keep to an hour timeslot, too. That means that in meetings
not dedicated to a specific topic, we probably only have a few minutes
per item. To make those minutes meaningful, we should use them to find
points of agreement or identify blockers to getting there, and then
identify responsible council members (or others) to work out those
issues outside the meeting. If we try to hash everything out in IRC,
it's going to be a three-hour meeting every time.

Hi,
we're currently figuring out how to reorganize the outreach part of the
Project to meet today's needs better. FAmSCo most likely will be dissolved
and replaced by FOSCo. In FAmSCo [1], we agree that it doesn't make much
sense to organize elections to a body that is going to cease to exist in a
couple of months. Instead we'd like to ask the Council as a higher
authority to extend our mandate till the F22 release to figure out a new
governance model and make a transition from FAmSCo to FOSCo. The new
elections should already be to the new body after F22.

#24: updating Embargoed Nations wiki page for Board → Council

I'm updating various wiki pages to reflect current project structure. One
such page is
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Embargoed_nations. This contains several
statements about Fedora Board beliefs and findings. I would like to
propose that we simply replace Board with Council everywhere it appears.
I think this is non-controversial, since it is just a continuation of
current policy, and would like to decide this by lazy approval; if there
are no objections with 7 days, I will go ahead and make the change.
I'm also going to send this to Fedora Legal because it seems to touch on
that as well, but hopefully there's no concerns.

wiki updated for board -> council
by Matthew Miller
I've gone through a bunch of pages on the wiki and updated Board ->
Council where it made obvious sense, marked other pages as historic,
and in a couple of cases posted here about some sections that might n
need bigger changes or simply where I didn't quite feel comfortable
with search & replace.
I'm sure there's plenty more — I didn't try to go through all of the
weekly report pages from 2006 and 2007 (and I don't think there's value
in doing that), or User pages — and there are a lot of translated pages
which need updating.*
I'm going to mark that todo item as done. If you see anything I missed,
feel free to fix it directly, or contact me. There's a _lot_ of wiki,
with a lot of cruft. If you see anything I've botched, same deal. :)
* Hmmm. I'm going to repost this to the translation team.
