#21: Permission for using Fedora trademarks for "Bantuan Fedora Indonesia" ---------------------+------------------- Reporter: salimma | Owner: Status: new | Priority: normal Component: General | Keywords: ---------------------+------------------- Some Indonesian contributors are working on utilizing [https://github.com /fedora-id/asknot-ng asknot-ng] for providing a landing page for users (and potential users) to get a clear picture of localized Fedora resources and potential ways of contributing .
The main Fedora instance of asknot-ng powers [http://whatcanidoforfedora.org/ What Can I Do For Fedora]; for ours we have not decided yet what domain we will use.
To generate the static site from the code on GitHub, the original instructions apply, but use this invocation instead:
```` ./asknot-ng.py templates/index.html questions/bantuan.yml --theme fedora ````
We will probably create a substitute theme if permission to use Fedora branding is not obtained; we plan on contributing translations for the main site as well.
If this requires a discussion at an upcoming meeting, let me know and I'll notify the others to attend as well. Thanks!
Maybe it happened before my tenure, but I don't recall any related permission being granted for http://whatcanidoforfedora.org/ either.
That said, for me personally, I'd like to know : * will this site be hosted by fedora infrastructure? If not, why not? * would it be possible to see a sample site in action (ideally fedora themed)?
Hi, I registered the domain and made the site myself but I didn't bring it before the Council. Apologies for missing that step. I did:
- Email the FPL (mattdm) and the Fedora Engineering Manager (pfrields). - Email the logo@fp.o address asking for permission to use the logo. - Email domainadmin@fp.org and Erin Dutton at Red Hat asking if I can transfer the domain to Red Hat's name, but we haven't actually made any real progress on this yet.
- will this site be hosted by fedora infrastructure? If not, why not?
http://whatcanidoforfedora.org is currently hosted on OpenShift, if this makes a difference. I am hoping to leave it there as its quite easy to setup and maintain but I'm open to suggestion from the Council.
I'm replying out of the ticket so as not to drag it off the topic of the proposed local community site.
Ralph did indeed email us about the fact he'd set up this site. The trademark angle didn't even occur to me, probably since it's been quite a while since I was among those actively dealing with it. :-)
My apologies for not pulling in the TM approval process earlier.
OK, so robyduck poked me on irc, we already have: * https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Local_community_domains and * https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Legal:Trademark_guidelines#Noncommercial_and_...
to help guide us here.
While I think it would be ideal if a *.fedoracommunity.org domain were used (and get implicit trademark permission). Even without that, it is my opinion that explicit permission is not required if one follows the guidelines in the second link (which seems to be the case with whatcanidoforfedora)
I'm really good at confusing myself here. Let's back up a step:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Local_community_domains#Options
outlines the options, * which one do you (as requester) want in this case? pre-purchased domain or self purchased domain?
Based on the answer to that question, you can provide the details for each, like names of who are responsible for the site, domain, specific services offered, and ip address/URL for council members to see content and presentation.
It is my opinion that we cannot move forward or decide anything without those important details.
This already exists: http://id.fedoracommunity.org/
Could the web app be deployed as part of this existing, approved domain?
Comment (by salimma):
We're thinking of using either bantuan.fedora.web.id (there's an existing self-purchased domain at fedora.web.id), or bantuan.id.fedoracommunity.org
One dilemma with using id.fedoracommunity.org is that the community member maintaining it doesn't really do much with it and nobody else has access -- but that's perhaps a separate matter? Ideally the site is accessible at both places.
We'd be happy to have it hosted on Fedora infrastructure, of course.
As for a demo site -- is it fine to bring it up (with Fedora theming) before approval is granted? In which case I'll get it up and report back.
The id.community.org is just an alias. If an alternative website is setup which meets the Indonesian communities needs better it can be pointed to that site.
Speaking here not for Council, because I'm not on it. But I did work on the community web sites process. So I can tell you using the alias is preferred by the previous Fedora Board(s), because it allows fixing problems just like this (non-maintenance), among other reasons. We should avoid the possibility of repeating that situation in the future.
If you have, and intend to keep, a domain using "Fedora" in its domain name, you need to refer here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Local_community_domains#Self- purchased_domain
Additionally to what pfrields said, as these requests (fcommunity) normally pass also through the Websites Trac, I remember you filing similar requests in the past:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/council- discuss/2013-September/012129.html
But I remember also other discussions, in which we gave you the advice to try to use a common website, as splitting local communities is not really useful for the Fedora Project itself.
Therefor it would be the best if you use the actual website which has the http://id.fedoracommunity.org alias to add your new web-app. In any case, if this is not possible (please try to find a common point in your community) and you choose to buy a separate domain, you need to sign the [https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Trademark_license_agreement Trademark License agreement] before you buy that domain, as stated in Paul's link above.
Finally, it's not that who comes first will keep the xx.fedoracommunity.org domain forever. If the actual page is not maintained anymore (I see there are some dead sections and a very old news link) the alias can be riassigned as smooge said. In the past I've setup a short [https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Robyduck/Fedora_community_guidelines (unofficial) draft] to help local communities to find the best solution. Maybe it can be useful here and my two cents can help the Council to have a better view of this thread.
I think that in the case of countries like Indonesia that separate communities are needed. The country of Indonesia is an enormous collection of islands, languages, and backgrounds. Trying to put them under one grouping is like saying that there is now a European Union so we don't need Czech, French, German, etc sites. [Or saying that because the NY Fedora group started first that the California one has to use what they setup. They don't even speak the same language :).]
Makes sense -- we could accommodate that through naming like id- XX.fedoracommunity.org, or similar.
Ah, let's suspend this for the moment, lack of resources on the local community's part at the moment. Thanks!
