Such a problem should be bugreported (via ABRT...) for GDB. There is even a (completed) project to make GDB fast: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/GdbIndex
I do not have reproducible an F14+ case where a GDB backtrace would take longer than 120 seconds.
The GDB crash info (backtrace etc.) as provided by ABRT may give some hints why GDB was hanging.
And even if SIGKILL is used still such case should be reported to the GDB maintainers some way. The SIGKILL case is currently not being reported AFAIK, at least I haven't seen any such GDB Bug yet.
