Bug ID: 2379757
Summary: Video Sequencer unusable due to inefficient decoding
of AVI/h264 movie files
Product: Fedora
Version: 42
Hardware: x86_64
OS: Linux
Status: NEW
Component: blender
Keywords: Desktop
Severity: high

Target Milestone: ---
Classification: Fedora
I wanted to edit a video in the AVI/h264 format in the Video Sequencer. Upon
loading the file and adding it to the timeline, seeking in the project because
close to impossible, because every jump in the timeline causes a significant
delay. After running with debug logging on, I suspect this is due to the use of
OpenH264 for decoding the video (instead of FFMPEG?). During the duration of
the freeze, I see a lot of decoding-related logs in the debug log.
I am actually surprised that loading a video in the AVI/h264 format is even
possible in the Flatpak build, because the RPM build of does not allow it. When
inspecting more closely the debug logs, it is due to OpenH264 not being able to
create a decoder for the video file upon wanting to load it.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Blender Fedora flatpak (launch from CLI with '-d --debug-all'
2. Open Blender
3. Go to 'Video Editing'
4. Add a AVI/264 video file to the timeline
5. Try to seek
Actual Results:
Seeking in the timeline is extremely choppy and makes the Video Sequence
completely unusable for actual work.
Expected Results:
Smooth seeking in the timeline.

Description of problem:
-Opened default scene, deleted default cube
-Imported .obj from
https://www.models-resource.com/nintendo_64/supersmashbros/model/31789/
-Went into edit mode to delete the faces that made up the ceiling
-Changed to Material preview, materials appeared but shading looked a bit
weird.
-Tried changing to Material preview again, then to solid, then to Material (I
think), materials appeared to become monochrome
-Moved camera into the room and tried to render. Render result appeared briefly
(materials were white) and then crashed.

support for Intel GPUs enabled, currently only CUDA and HIP are enabled

Description of problem:
When I render animations, the render window hangs. [^1] If I even attempt to
close the main window in this state, they both hang. The consequence of this is
inconsistent: most of the time Blender handles it somewhat well, but the wait
remains annoying. Other times, like this, it outright crashes. The DE is
ultimately what killed it: it offers to do so when it's hung.
