F13 Rockets

[Máirín Duffy]

Hi,

I spent some time this weekend working on another iteration of the
Fedora rocket lines idea [1]. Tatica put together a 3D rocket in Blender
[2], so I used this rocket to make a new composition roughly based on
the rocket lines sketch:

Do you have any ideas for improvement or how to work this more? I think
it may be too literal, and by default maybe we should take the rockets
and stars out or something and just work with the trails only for an
abstract pattern. Not sure though. What do you think? Critique
please! :)

I see two problems with the design, probably both are solvable:
- to me the rockets look pretty much like some big white blobs. I 
understand you had to make them white, since the 3D model looked pretty 
much like a rocket *toy*, but I think it should be also be simplified. 
Space rockets are not that big compared with their trails and their 
wings are definitely not that big.
- the sky/space is a bit too dark and too plain and the white mist at 
the bottom is somewhat unrealistic. Maybe we can add some colors and 
make it not that dark.

I don't want to pile too many ideas into one piece of art.  But
there's something I really like about the "flying forward in space"
picture here:  https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:Fedorasky.jpg

(Yes, the logo is unwanted, understood!) :-)

I do like the idea of the stars providing that element of light that
we've used in other backgrounds.  And it seems dynamic with all that
motion, although I worry that maybe it's *too* much motion.

Could this be combined in any meaningful way with rocket trails?
("No" is an acceptable answer, you guys are the artists.) :-)

Actually I was thinking the following.. multiple rockets on that
background.. each one getting more 'advanced' to star ship.. sort of
evolution of spaceships mirroring evolution of fedora. Of course I am
on a lot of pain medication so that could be that talking too :)

Okay, I really re-worked this puppy:

- It's a lot more abstract. I pulled the rockets.

- I used spiro splines to make the rocket trails

- I did a lot of gimping to texturize and glow the wallpaper.

Some inspiration I drew from:

The concept behind this, is there's 3 different rockets that have flown
in swirls and they're meeting together out in the distance of space.

What do you think? I know it's dark but... it is space-y :)

Hi,
In my view it is a little bit intrusive, butreducing the contrast and/or the colour
saturation will spoil the impression.

Maybe the picture is too big - perhaps smaller will look better.
The rest of the part looks very impressive and goes well with the icons.

A bit dark to the left.. and for some reason I feel like it needs a
target... I know it fits in with the general soft, blue backgrounds we
have had.. but oooooh I wonder if we could mix the Sun background with
this one.. or a moon photo? [Ok I loved that theme.. ]

More reworking - it's a bit more swirly / the rockets come together at a
more distinct point. Before they were about to come together but not
quite there.

I love this beautiful design :)
It's cool work.

The blue version is classical Fedoras design.

Contrast is very good for icons.

Nice job on it. This is what I had in mind. One thing though. In my opinion,
the rockets are a little to bold. Maybe if we made them pop out less, it
would flow with the rest of it.

But I don't like the rockets, they don't look good - I think they
should be made in Inkscape instead of Blender :)
I love the mist in the bottom - look really good and detailed.
There could be some nice little details in the star background (planets etc.)

Imho why not the "spacy" one from 1 to 5 in different flight phases?
Personally I like them more they are really "something special" thought
the spaceship from Mars ;-)

when downloading). You may place the Fedora logo on the rocket.

Oh, that's a great idea, I can see those rocket used on Anaconda banners 
and splashes, website banners and so (however, not that much on the 
desktop wallpaper, where we traditionally are more abstract).

The icons as the the default icon theme? That's not something we (the 
Design Team) have any decision power, but I expect mclasen will stay 
again with Mist, which is a reasonable default.

In my view they do not look like rockets - maybe they look like some other things.
Anyway.

This rocket technology with capsule is of the 80s. In terms of technology it is not very
convincing (incl. the background theme of the capsule, which is marvellous as design and
perplexing as technology).
Instead of capsule buried in the dust (I am speaking about the background) maybe it is
much better to have some 'Emperial Destroyer' at a stationary orbit
'hanging' on anti-gravitation above the planet. With engines of self-igniting fuel
on liquid Oxygen and liquid Hydrogen or Helium plasma.

I don't know.

Can you draw that? Preferably until the end of this week, so we can meet 
the deadline for Alpha? (so the graphic is not expected to be "perfect" 
of "final").

You don't need to draw anything - there are models of spaceships all over the market,
including on Internet. Just take s.th, scan it in 3D model and adopt it.

By drawing you mean drawing the engine probably. Well, this is a real problem!!!

The liquid Hydrogen and Oxygen engine is the engine of the Space Shuttle (take a look to
see the colour of the reactive trace).
Helium plasma or s.th like that - in Wikipedia.

Antigravitation - well, nobody really knows how an engine working on antigravitation will
look like - maybe something producing directed super high frequency (huge pieso-crystal).

I cannot draw at all - I have missed the lessons. All the things I am doing are on the
computer. Art is my hobby - I am a software engineer by education.

why don't you try to remodel your rocket into a spaceship (and save it as new file).

As far as I can see it is 3D model in vector graphics. Flatten it a little bit here and
there to become something like the Millenium Falcon of Starwars.

We don't want to use any design that might infringe on others'
trademarks or imply such a connection.

Back in August there was a thread on what we wanted to see in an ideal
desktop background, I had this link handy:

I'll try to get this transferred to the wiki and fix up the front
Artwork page appropriately.  We can continue to refine these
guidelinese as needed, but it will help contributors do better design
if they have a better idea what we're looking for.
