#212: Aqueduct Project Stickers ----------------------------------+--------------------------- Reporter: jameslabocki | Owner: nobody Type: logo design request | Status: new Priority: major | Component: Other Artwork Severity: Moderately Involved | Keywords: logo stickers Blocked By: | Blocking: ----------------------------------+--------------------------- The aqueduct community project https://fedorahosted.org/aqueduct/ is interested in creating some stickers for our community with our logo (or better yet, a new logo) and the URL in order to increase awareness for the project as we discuss it at conferences and shows. What type of information can I provide to help fulfill this type of request?

So I did an initial set of sketches for this design and ended up getting a bit overly busy. Here is where we stand right now with this ticket:
IIRC (correct me if I'm wrong, James) James preferred either the water droplet concept, or a bit of a mashup between the neptune and helmet sketch that would show a man underneath the helmet to give the logo a 'face'. I didn't get around to sketching what that might look like.
For the back story behind the project, it's not specifically a piece of software but more a community around sharing information about security:
- Aqueducts carry and spread water to help people, and Aqueduct the project will carry and spread security best practices / scripts / etc to help people, so that's where the water concept (which was James' original logo and concept) comes from.
- Since aqueducts were invented by the Romans and Roman helmets are protective (Aqueduct will help protect people from security breaches like a helmet protects people's heads), that's where the helmet idea came from.... adding the water to the scrub-brush looking thing that's typically on the top was adding more of a water theme to it.
- The neptune guy is because again, aqueducts being an invention of Romans, Neptune is the Roman god of water and oceans... the link to security is basically that he looks bad ass and he is swinging a triton around so he'll, uh, poke hackers in the eye? :)

Awesome, I'm all for bad ass. I'll work on the water drop concept and a few mashup options involving the helmet and Neptune/face and then post the sketches here.

Hi Sarah, this ticket is still yours; nightmoves posted some ideas but it's up to you what to do from here.

Comment (by graphitefriction):
Per James' and Mo's discussions I've included two helmet+face logo options (facefront and profile).
Things not to worry about; I can fix them digitally:
1. The soldier has small eye syndrome - it's been a while since I drew a human.
2. The letter style is not meant to represent a particular font.
3. Shading is at a minimum since this is an initial concept round and I didn't want to lock down on a certain style.
Things to consider when choosing the coloring options:
1. What is going to be the main use of the logo on collateral materials? For buttons, stickers, business cards and the like I wouldn't suggest the detailed, photorealistic option. However the photorealistic version could work well for posters, presentations, and full-size prints on T-shirt backs.
2. Is the logo going to commonly be grouped with other projects (or umbrella other projects) like Katello and Aeolus? Do you want the aqueduct logo to match/compliment another project's logo style?

Next actions: Let me know if you like one of the logos I uploaded. I'll then digitize it. Nightmoves has also provided two logos for your consideration.
If you don't like any of the logos, or want to combine aspects from different options, please don't hesitate to tell me. I can hit the drawing board again.
If you picked a logo I uploaded, let me know which style(s) you want to explore first. (Stone relief, monotone, photo realistic (these are explained in the frontface.png) I have no problem going through several rounds of styling.
Is there an event or launch date you're targeting? I like deadlines.

Second round of sketches
General notes: I can reposition the duck so that he stares straight at the viewer i.e. full frontal like in the 1st round sketch using the soldier. I drew his armor and gear in the style of a roman soldier, I think that gives him a unique style in the superhero pantheon. Interesting fact, his skirt of leather strips is called a pteruges in Greek and translates to feathers. Any of the detailing on the armor and shield can be changed/increased/decreased. I can remove the dagger; I used that for my own perspective orientation. I would just fist his hand on his hip. I could also add a cape.
The first sketch (duck_blank.png) is a large rendering of the hero without text. This is to give you a sense of what he would look like on a flyer or poster. He's too big at this size for a webpage header.
The fullduck.png sketch consists of two layouts using the full hero scaled to a size that's more appropriate to a webpage header. If I vectorized him, I'd remove detail and use bold, crisp shadows and highlights in a crime noir style.
Cut_shieldleft.png is the same as the fullduck.png but I only used the hero's torso so he could be scaled up in the webpage header. I just did a quick and dirty crop here, the 'real' version wouldn't cut his hand off.
Shieldright.png has him holding the shield on his other side. Note: this is an earlier sketch so the duck isn't as refined. I'd be using the cut_shieldleft.png shaping and details if you liked this orientation better.
Mohawk_shieldright.png gives you an idea of what a punkier duck would look like (this is also an earlier sketch, the mohawk would be put on the cut_shieldleft.png version).
Roundshield.png was a quick exploration of an emblem type logo. I could also replace the square shield in the other drawings with a round shield like this (without the head profile in it though).

Comment (by graphitefriction):
Note: I have not done any editing on the duck's head, spear, or added the helmet yet.
I have uploaded two intermediate drafts for review. The main purpose of these two drafts is to have the Aqueduct team point out any changes they want to the logo's form factor before I continue refining and shading it. Also, I have provided two basic color schemes: one where the duck is in cool colors (blue) and the shield in bright golds; the second features the duck in dark reds and gold armor with the shield in cool, bright grays.
Let me know which color scheme you prefer (if either). Also let me know if there is anything you want changed regarding the shape of the duck, shield, or font.

aqueductproof.png is the final design check for the logo before I finalize it (clean up antialiasing, render it into various sizes, and put it on the sticker template). Please let me know what changes you want made to lines, colors, etc.
