Hi, The list of packages still exists, [1], though it needs to be updated. I started working on the spin , the initial size is around 1000MB, still all fonts need to be put in. My name is Charles Sutton. By day I am a mild mannered intellectual property attorney. I have been making art for about 12 years, and out of that I have been learning digital media for about three. I have mostly been interested in fine art, although I do all kinds of stuff ranging from minimalist abstractions to representational landscape and figurative drawings. I have a couple of print illustrative publication credits and a large number of juried shows I have been in. I am a former President of one non-profit art gallery and a former treasurer of another. I am a current co-chair of the annual California State Bar Association Bench and Bar Art Exhibition. I have a little bit of experience at making small icons and quite a bit of experience making what one might call webcomic type material to go along with the minimalist abstraction experience that might come in handy in the area of wall papers or screensavers. I mostly work in the GIMP or traditional media, though I have Inkscape and Blender available to me as well as some proprietary stuff like TurboCAD, Photoshop Elements 3 and Painter Essentials. I think that's about it in a nutshell. Was just chatting a bit with msourada in #fedora-design today, and I was curious about contributing kde-compatible bits to constantine-backgrounds directly instead of doing it separately like in the past, see https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-kde-artwork/ https://fedorahosted.org/fedora-kde-artwork/browser but I'd like to get away from that, and get everything more collaborative and centralized. But, it seems there is no source-control currently being used for fedora theming yet. I'd like to propose hosting what's used in stuff like constantine-backgrounds (and future fedora-related theming) in a git (or svn or whatever) repo on http://fedorahosted.org/fedora-design/ I'm not suggesting (yet anyway) using such repos for design-workflow really, that's something that seems to already have been worked out. I'm only talking about the often painful technical details of getting already- designed stuff under source-control, and packaged for distro use. -- Rex

SVG rendering performance

If we choose to distribute SVGs as the default background files, it may be an idea to examine the rendering speed. On my rather old home machine, it takes over two minutes to draw the mosaico SVG background [1] with the CPU running flat out. What really increases the cpu demand is the use of blur. Removing all blur brings it down to 3 seconds (about the same as other PNG/JPEG backgrounds). We should also remove all the additional XML fluff inkscape puts into the files. F12 Theme Selection Meeting Summary

[F12 Artwork] Final Wallpaper Concept

Hi all, it's about time we discuss which of the three [1][2][3] wallpaper concepts will be used as a base for the Constantine theme. Please bear in mind we are not comparing how evolved each of the designs is, but rather checking the potential of the design. We want a wallpaper that is both nice and suitable for default, not a wallpaper that's awesome and cool but you cannot discern icons/text on half of it. I suggest that people raise their reasons for and against choosing one or another in this thread and we hold a (hopefully) short IRC session next Monday (2009-08-10) to make the final decision. Would 16:00 UTC be a good time for everyone? Don't forget to take into account e.g. the progress that's now happening in another thread about mosaico and any other updates to the mentioned designs. I have used Linux since 2005 and this year I started to contribute to Fedora - as it is my favorite. I'm the Danish translation maintainer, but now I am almost finished all the translations for Fedora 12 and want another little side-project to contribute to. mosaico perspective mockups

As per Paul's suggestion to try to modify the perspective of María's mosaico designs to make it vibrate a little less with icons on the desktop, I did some experimentation today in Inkscape with perspective. http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/temp/f12%20mosaic/ The source SVG is in the directory as well. Hi, I'm not very much up to date with this... What has happened to the Art Studio spin (or whatever it was called) we were trying to make? I've just seen a message on desktop-list proposing dropping gimp from Desktop Spin (the infamous size issues), so it would probably make sense to resurrect the idea of having a spin for (not only) Fedora designers with all the apps we use, like gimp, inkscape, blender, scribus, etc. possibly with also useful content like templates, brushes, etc. Martin

[F12 Artwork] Constantine backgrounds packages

Hi all, I've just put together initial packages containing the Constantine wallpapers I consider (based on the feedback we received) to be "worth" putting in for Alpha. There is constantine-backgrounds package [1] which contains tatica's mocaico and Mo's and Nicu's underwater mosaic, both as slide-show (switching between those two once twice per hour) and separately. Next there is constantine-backgrounds-extras package [2] which contains Samuele's 4flowers and 4horses, Jayme's Constantine Statue, Charlie's bird mosaic and tatica's pruebas and freedom. I've created 16:10 and 4:3 versions for all the included images in 1600x1000, resp. 1600x1200 resolution. The desire is to select one of those two in constantine-backgrounds to be the F12's default, and in the extras package we'll put four selected designs, chosen from either the two packages or from external sources. If these packages are OK with everyone -- I'd especially like people to test it on 4:3 screens as I have only 16:10 and to check if I hadn't omitted some popular design -- I'll submit them for inclusion in Fedora. Final wallpaper selection

According to the Design schedule[1], today is the day to have the Alpha wallpapers bundled up in a package. I believe Martin said that he could do the packaging, but was waiting on a selection by the team. If I'm not mistaken, the things that need to happen are: * The team needs to decide on a selection of wallpaper for the F12 Alpha release today. * Ensure Martin knows the selection and packages the selection(s) into Rawhide, replacing the Leonidas backgrounds, if possible, to save space. Let me know what you think, ~spot ------ End Original Message ------ My take: 1. we though mainly about making those available on the web, i think it would be confusing to add various clauses to the license, which very few people will read, understand or care about. it would be preferable to go with a simpler route. 2. we can remove the trademarks only if we have access to the sources, which i am not sure is the case for all the images. with some, like FC6 NDA it may be impossible to remove everything and still retain a good looking image (or it may be, since what we have there is not complying with the guidelines anyway, so what is in there can't be our trademark). -- nicu

Hi all, I am still waiting for someone to come up with lyrics for theme song for fedora community. In the meantime, I have tried to create a sound theme for next fedora release, For now I am putting up for review, the system start sound, and the other sounds will be matching the main theme. alpha backgrounds

Is somebody already working on packaging new backgrounds for the alpha ? I'm asking because the desktop spin is currently over size again, and the leonidas background packages are large, so I'd like to drop them. If we can get packages with one (or more) candidates for the new background into rawhide soon, I'll switch the leonidas backgrounds with those... Matthias

The default theme for F12

Hey all, we've been discussing the idea of changing the default GTK+/Metacity theme in F12. Nodoka has been the default for a while, and it seems to undergo a major rework now ( http://mso-chronicles.blogspot.com/ ). We don't want to do a radical visual change, though. The idea is to go back to the upstream default, Clearlooks. Let me know what you think. I'd like to make this change for the alpha. Matthias
