Re: [Design-team] Welcome to the "design-team" mailing list (Digest mode)
by John Biebel
Hello Fedora Designers.
I'm a (relatively) new employee at Red Hat
and would like to become more involved in the Fedora community. I'd
like to introduce myself: I'm an interaction designer and artist
originally from suburban Connecticut, USA, who has lived and worked in
New York, London and now Boston. I'm a graduate of the Cooper Union for
the Advancement of Science and Art in Manhattan, where I majored in
Painting and Photography. I've worked as an illustrator, visual
designer, copywriter, and many other jobs during college. I was once
employed by an artist to create 10,000 skulls out of plaster during one
of the hottest summers New York City ever witnessed. So indeed, the work
background has been diverse.
In the arts now, I work primarily in
painting and music, my music project being named Ichigatsu (hence the
username),
which is Japanese for January.
I'm excited by the possibilities
that are offered by Fedora and a completely free-software experience. I
also think it's important as a Red Hat employee to be as familiar with
our products as possible and contribute where and when I can.
Thanks
for the opportunity to introduce myself and I hope I may serve in some
capacity.

Supplemental Wallpapers Package
by Martin Sourada
Hi all,
I've finaly found some time to work on the supplemental wallpapers
pacakge. Here's the result for early testing:
http://mso.fedorapeople.org/packages/F14/RPMS/
The git commit it's based on is here:
http://git.fedorahosted.org/git/?p=design-team.git;a=commit;h=d6bbd7a72f6...
What I'd like from you to review before I push it to fedora is:
1. The Attribution file. It gets installed with the -single package
which is required by both -gnome and -kde
2. The .desktop files -- there's some attribution as well, I might
have make an error here and there
3. The desktop-backgrounds-lauglin-extras.xml -- the attribution info
I tried to add does not show in background properties and I don't know
whether it's my fault or whether it isn't supported. Plus, again, I
might have made a mistake when filling it out.
4. Two images were left out from Marc's slideshow XML [1] -- Oh
Tomorrow I’m Alone and Thou Apocalypse by Hamed Saber so I left them
out as well. Was that because they're licensing wasn't verified yet?
Plus, I went ahead and sanitized the filenames a bit...
Thanks,
Martin

Release criteria proposal: fedora release artwork
by James Laska
Greetings gang,
From the last 2 F14 blocker bug meetings [1], it became apparent that we
need release criteria to describe how best to prioritize issues related
to Fedora release artwork. I took an action item to draft up 2 criteria
to describe the expectations around release artwork before Final, and
for the Final release.
I'd like to propose the following criteria. As always, comments welcome
and encouraged.
= Fedora 14 Alpha =
* The default Fedora artwork used must either refer to the current
Fedora release under development (Fedora 14), or reference an interim
release milestone (e.g. Alpha or Beta). If a release version number is
used, it must match the current Fedora release under development. This
includes artwork used in the installer, firstboot, graphical boot,
graphical login and desktop background.
= Fedora 14 Final =
* The proposed final Fedora artwork is included and enabled by default
for the installer, graphical boot, firstboot, graphical login and
desktop background. All Fedora artwork must be consistent with the
proposed final theme, and if any artwork contains a graphical version
number, the version number used must match the Fedora release number.
Generic release artwork (e.g. Alpha, Beta, Development) must not be used
for the installer, graphical boot, firstboot, graphical login or the
desktop background.
Thanks,
James

Supplemental Wallpapers
by Nicu Buculei
Based on the team's vote, Emily created a page with the "winners":
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F14_Artwork_Supplemental_Wallpapers_Winners
The next step is to re-check the licenses to ensure we are all OK with
the usage:
- 5 images were submitted by known Fedora contributors, who signed the
CLA: icon, fabsh, bruce89 and nicubunu, they should be OK;
- me and Emily split the remaining ones and are contacting the authors,
the images are taken from Flickr and they have Creative Commons licenses
but we want to check they are OK with the attribution.
I started with my own part:
- mailed and awaiting replies from Hamed Saber, Unhindered by Talent,
Eneas, Ivan Zuber;
- identified "Lavender Kiss" as having an inappropriate license,
CC-BY-ND, which is considered non-Free so not usable in Fedora.
We will also need the help of a packager to push them in the distro,
Martin or someone else, can you lend a hand?

Installation experience
by Misha Shnurapet
I decided to upgrade to F13 last weekend and I can say the Design Team has done a great job on the installer! I loved seeing the logo twice, an «empty» grayed-out version before the installation and the colored one at end. I think this should stay for the future release, because it (1) made my installation process seem much shorter (though I planned to spend an extra hour or two downloading the updates and personalizing the installed system, I felt an ease like I was all done right there), (2) made me remember the last screen of the installer with the logo and think of the Project a couple of times after.
Of course, the artwork is also great.

a design-team discussion, I have some doubts.
About Fedora 14, the wallpapers where already choosen? There is any chance
that I could submit one to review?
Sorry if I still noobing here, but in wiki I read something about "Concept
submissions ended 6 July, 2010", but i keep seeing people submiting new

Supplemental Wallpaper XML Slideshow
by Marc Stewart
Emily and Máirín,
I've created a slideshow file for the supplemental wallpapers.
http://marcstewart.fedorapeople.org/f14/supplemental/F14_Supplemental.xml
For now, I'm assuming:
/usr/share/backgrounds/f14-supplemental/
for the directory and:
Autumn_colors.jpg
Mricon-f14-backgrounds-submission-red.jpg
Denali_from_mckinley_princess_lodge.jpg
Mricon-f14-backgrounds-submission-cart.jpg
Jean-marie_hullot_(imhullot_on_flickr).jpg
P1040377.jpg
The_sound_of_decadence.jpg
Dutch_skies.jpg
Kuranda_Butterfly_Sanctuary.jpg
Seneca_lake.jpg
Nicubunu-f14-backgrounds-submission-Magic-forest.jpg
Geese_at_Sunset.jpg
Turning_and_turning_in_the_widening_gyre.jpg
for the filenames. That's excluding the two problematic ones mentioned
in the meeting. Obviously, if you hear back from their creator, I can
add them in too.
The details are easy enough to change, aswell, if, for example,
Nicubunu-f14-backgrounds-submission-Magic-forest.jpg ends up being
renamed as just Magic_forest.jpg, or another installation
directory/directories is/are used. Just let me know.
I've set them to change after 30 minutes, and since different aspect
images have a tendency to cause a resizing glitch during the transition,
I've opted not to use a fade between the images. If all the images end
up sharing the 4:3 ratio, then I could add in, say, a two second
transition time.
