F15 wallpaper 0-day update
by Máirín Duffy
Hi folks,
I'm going to work on some polish updates to the non-GNOME 3 wallpaper
for F15 to put in for a zero-day update. I am going to try to get them
done by Thursday AM to get packaged and pushed. Let me know if you have
any ideas on finishing the design; I'll post updates on what I've got
here to the list as I crank them out.

(Again, sorry for the out-of-thread replies, hopefully Gmane will fix things so
I can reply through the NNTP interface and get things threaded properly.)

Screenshots in reviews are the first thing users see of Fedora. The GA
wallpaper is also what users see when they run the live image, install from it
and then boot it. They are going to be really surprised when the wallpaper
changes on them after they update the first time, and there WILL be complaints
about it no matter how much better the changed theme is. (People have different
tastes, even the ugliest things are considered "beautiful" by some people. And
for that matter, I don't consider the GA wallpaper to be ugly at all.)
In addition, your proposed theme changes break Jaroslav's KDM and KSplash
theme designs.

That's why I wrote "technically". Let's be clear: I'm only speaking as a KDE
SIG member, not as a design team member.
On the other hand, Jaroslav has been designing the KDM and KSplash themes for
all recent releases. And Martin Sourada and María Leandro (tatica) are
definitely design team members.

(Sorry for the out-of-thread replies, but Gmane has the e-mail address to
gateway to set incorrectly, so I can only reply by direct mail.)

But the final release is already declared gold, it's too late for that.
Really, the only thing we can do here is to keep the wallpaper that ships on
our current ISOs. I don't see it as being "unfinished" or "broken". In fact,
the feedback from our users was very positive. And even if it were unfinished,
the deadline for finishing it would have been the Final Change Deadline on
May 9.
I fully agree with you that such a change is not acceptable for a 0-day
update.

I am sorry to disappoint you, but the Design Team is bound by the same
freezes as the rest of the distribution. In addition, if I look at the
feedback from Martin and María (tatica), I'm not convinced that the Design
Team as a whole is backing the proposed change, either.
(FWIW, I'm also technically a Design Team member, though I haven't actively
worked on anything design/artwork-related for several Fedora releases now,
Jaroslav was the one doing the recent KDM and KSplash themes.)

I'm sorry, but this is very different from the current final wallpaper and
as such not suitable for an update at all. (In fact, there shouldn't be any
design changes at all to the wallpaper in an update.) Don't take me wrong,
this is not a criticism of the design itself (though I must admit I
personally like the F15 GA wallpaper better), but of the proposed delivery
method.
As Jaroslav pointed out, changing the KDE Plasma wallpaper under us will
break the KDM and KSplash themes (and/or the transition from KDM/KSplash to
the actual Plasma desktop).
In addition, the wallpaper is a distinctive element of the look&feel of the
distribution. Many screenshots will be taken (or have already been taken,
even) of Fedora 15 with the GA wallpaper. Having an update change the
default wallpaper is a very bad idea.
Your redesigned wallpaper can be shipped as an alternate (optional) theme,
but it's really too late to change the default! Sorry!
