Fedora Design team presentation to council?

Hi all! The Fedora Council has been doing roughly-monthly checkins with different Fedora teams and subprojects, and we'd be interested in hearing from Design. We've been doing these on Google+ [*], with a presenter with slides and stuff. It doesn't need to be long or very formal, but something more organized than an unstructured chat. It'd cover: - the current state of the subproject - future plans - things the team needs from the rest of the project - any blockers we can help unblock - big resource requests? Is anyone from Design interested in doing this? We use the Monday 17:00 UTC timeslot. Summary of today's meeting

Hi! We had a meeting today. In attendance were myself, ryanlerch, gnokii, mleonova, riecatnor, sam08, mbriza, garrett, and tatica. It will be an IRC meeting and anyone is welcome to come. The topics I'll present to the council are covered pretty well in this summary from last meeting: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/design-team/2015-October/007369.h… The main change in the message I think is that swag distribution / production varies by geo. For the FAD we would like to bring up to them, it is looking like July 2016 in Boston would be a good time/location. It is close to Flock the next month in EMEA, but EMEA in particular is expensive for our current team makeup. New Meeting Time ================ Our new meeting time is going to shift next meeting due to daylight savings time. Today the meeting was 1200 UTC / 8 AM EDT... next meeting (Thursday, November 5) will be at 1300 UTC / 8 AM EST. If you have a daylight savings shift, the time won't change for you; if you don't, the meeting will be one hour later. We will wait for anuradha to finish her exams to try to address the issues. Ticket 402: Need to scale down hackergotchi in planet rss feed css ------------------------------------------------------------------ This ticket needed an owner so ryanlerch grabbed it. Ticket 210: Update fedoracommunity maps with Russia in EMEA ------------------------------------------------------------ We thought we were finished with this one but it turns out there are some issues. ryanlerch kindly picked it back up to fix. Ticket 279: Design for "This week in Fedora" -------------------------------------------- This ticket needed an updating. We discussed this design at the Flock design clinic; ryanlerch created a repo on pagure.io and added a mockup at the event that he committed then; he also has newer work he did post-Flock that he will upload later. I also have a mock from flock I never uploaded so I'll upload that too. Ticket 367: Need logo design for the Fedora Security Team(FST) -------------------------------------------------------------- This ticket is so close to being done, the logo just needs a few tiny tweaks. Pinged Yogi on it. Ticket 350: Anaconda banner template ------------------------------------ Yogi completed the template work; we just need it to be posted to the wiki. Yogi is going to work on this. (He contacted me after the meeting) In-Progress / Feedback Tickets ============================== Ticket 403: Icons for FAS 3 ---------------------------- riecatnor asked for feedback on her work for this one: - she designed three updated options for the group icon based on feedback from before, and the 3rd one was the favorite. - there's an icon used in the dark blue bar in the upper left of this screen; the group icon should hopefully work there as well: http://fas3-dev.fedorainfracloud.org/group/details/3001 - in context, the users icon stands out a bit in the full screen mockup because the fedora logo isn't square. we suggested riecatnor modify the mockup to add a square border along the outside of the icon to see if that fixes the issue (https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/attachment/ticket/403/users_mockup.png) Ticket 407: Logo for mojefedora.cz ---------------------------------- mleonova asked for feedback on this logo design. the favorites were the upper left and lower left versions; the designs were well-liked :) Ticket 404: F23 Release Posters ------------------------------- sam08 created these awesome designs. We don't know if the reporter used them, but they are all quite nice. I asked sam08 to post the SVGs and we'll close the ticket and advertise them more widely to the Fedora community to use. ~m

New Meeting Time

Hi folks, I think we've have the whenisgood opened up long enough to get a good representative sample (we've had 13 responses.) It looks like the best time that gets us the best representation and leaves out the least number of people is: 12 PM UTC on Thursdays Which is: - 4 hours earlier than our current time, on Thurs instead of Tues - 5 AM (US + Canada/Pacific) - 7:30 AM (Caracas) - 7 AM EST (East Coast US after falling back on Nov 1) - 8 AM EDT (East Coast US until Nov 1) - 2 PM (Europe / Berlin + Rome) - 3 PM (Moscow) - 5:30 PM (Kolkata) - 7 PM (Phnom Penh) - 8 PM (Kuala Lumpur) - 10 PM (Queensland AU) I guess this is a bad time of year to change the meeting time given daylight savings changes. GlitterGallery: Feedback on image annocation

Hi, I am not sure if you guys have ever heard of GlitterGallery <https://github.com/glittergallery/GlitterGallery>. It is a git hosting website (yeah! yet another one). Instead of code view, we show image view of your git repo. I was putting together last feature before maintainers of the project went completely unresponsive (I am a contributor). I need your help in deciding something, cause in the end you guys will be using it. I am using annotorious <https://github.com/annotorious/annotorious> to implement image annotation. You can have an idea of how it would work, here <http://annotorious.github.io/demos/hello-world.html>. For annotations to persist on page reload, I need to store complete img tag in database. This means that img tag has to be as small as possible. Closest solution was that I change blob of image (blob is kinda like string equivalent of your image. This is what get stored in your git repo) to an image file. However, support to change blob to file seems to broken for svg in rmagic (check #226 <https://github.com/rmagick/rmagick/issues/226>). I can get around this if I change svg files to png. I wanted to ask, if I serve your svg files as png, can you guys roll with it? I won't be tampering with your repo, I will be just serving your svg files as png on our website. Changes in F23 schedule

Hi Design team, I would like to notify you about a change in the F23 schedule I just made [1]. I found two wrongly scheduled task for the Design team in F23 schedule: * "Package Final Splash Screens " * "Package Final Wallpaper" These two task were schedule just a day before F23 GA. I move these tasks to the proper dates, so now these two tasks are now scheduled on 2015-Nov-13. I am sorry for this last-minute notice. Unfortunately I did not catch this earlier. Create Count Down Graphic ...

According to https://fedorapeople.org/groups/schedule/f-23/f-23-design-tasks.html the Create Count Down Graphic has *14* days. Because most of tasks are done I think this period of time is to large. Also I think tthe Count Down Graphic can be done from Splash Screen . The Screen Beta and Official Count Down Graphics can fix well together, so I think is need to add one new issue Design Phase Process . Request to co-maintain f22-background

Updated f23-backgrounds ready for testing

2 neat things (inkscape/gimp nightlies, new inkscape plugin)

Here is a quick run-through of what we discussed; ***please*** feel more than welcome to reply here and continue the discussion: Tickets ======= #360 Fedora LiveUSB Creator artwork ----------------------------------- https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/ticket/360 mbriza joined us for this discussion; mleonova created a mockup of two variations, one with the spins/labs icons in fedora blue, another with the spins/labs icons in a patterned grey. (the concern to be addressed with this is that the gray icons looked like they were inactive / not selectable in the UI context.) We decided to go with the patterned gray versions. mockup: http://i.imgur.com/6BXS7lF.png #403 Icons for new FAS website ------------------------------ https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/ticket/403 riecatnor shared her first drafts of the icon designs and asked for feedback. Some points that were brought up in the discussion: - the first row and fourth row were the favorite designs. - we weren't sure what the 'platform' icon should be in the original request; riecatnor will ask reporter - we wanted to see the icons in context in a UI screenshot, but the app was down during our meeting so we couldn't see what the app looks like to try to imagine the icons in context. riecatnor will ask reporter for screenshots / to set site back up so she can take screenshots and maybe mockup the icons in context. - need to confirm with reporter the target icon display size - may need to snap artwork to the pixel grid if its sufficiently small - try in the group icon to maybe do a shoulder line for the center person and taper it off about halfway down New Meeting Time ================ So far the largest number of folks can make 9 AM EDT / 1 PM UTC on Wednesdays, but we are waiting on more folks to respond to the survey. Here's what we talked about, but if we missed anything or if you have big ideas, please let's discuss here on list! Current State of the Design Team: --------------------------------- Our current state is good. We had a Fedora Activity Day this past January 2015 (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FAD_DesignTeam_2014) as a sort of reboot for the team, and we accomplished lasting progress at that time. We cleaned out our ticket queue and set up a new system for ticket filing and reviews, and we re-established our regular meetings which we're still doing. Our ticket queue remains fairly clean and sane post-cleaning, meaning our maintenance processes are likely working. Similarly riecatnor and threebean redesigned the Fedora Badge design new ticket submission process and are getting more detailed and better-written badge request tickets as a result. One upcoming issue is that I've been running the meetings and will be out on medical leave Nov/Dec - Feb/Mar, so we need to get on a new meeting schedule ahead of time to try to get into a routine with other folks leading the meetings. Future Plans: ------------- mleonova is working on a project to clean up our swag assets and put together a directory with print-ready, pre-approved Fedora swag designs. More on her project here: https://mashaleonova.wordpress.com/2015/10/06/sharing-in-open-source-and-sw… mizmo has been working on the Fedora Hubs project (http://blog.linuxgrrl.com/category/fedora/fedora-hubs/ ) and ongoing updates to Fedora websites (e.g. redesign of www.getfedora.org for new Atomic focus http://blog.linuxgrrl.com/2015/09/15/fedora-atomic-logo-idea/ ) Any other folks with big plans please shout out so we can add them to our list! Things Design Team Needs from the Rest of the Project: ------------------------------------------------------ This is where we spent the bulk of our discussion time. :) 1) Design Team FAD 2016 We talked about potentially holding another Design Team FAD (Fedora Activity Day) sometime in 2016, after March, and the focus could be both recruiting new folks (maybe hosting at a university or colocated with a design event where we could get some recruits) and working on badge artwork. Riecatnor mentioned the badge artwork queue is quite long and we need help. 2) Show Me the Content! We often get asked to design materials without being given content to use. Sometimes this manifests in designs filled with lipsum that end up needing substantial changes when the real content comes in, sometimes it manifests in designers writing the content themselves. For the rest of the project, the takeaway here is that we really need the content before we can do a workable design in a timely and efficient manner. 3) Recruiting and Retention We do struggle a bit with recruiting and retention. One idea we came up with was to have more events - virtual events - like office hours where new folks can show up to get help. In terms of retention a frequent reason we're aware of for folks leaving the team is different work schedules or general business. 4) Need Specs + Printer Info + Reasonable Time Please Commonly we're asked to do design tasks that involve printing (paper items or swag) but not provided specs or contact information for the printer/producer of the items. This ends up causing extra work for the designers who sometimes need to completely reformat a design for when they finally get specs for the printer, and unfortunately sometimes results in the design being produced incorrectly (riecatnor cited the Flock Rochester booklets as an example of this.) The integrity of our designs should be treated as seriously as the integrity of Fedora's code, so we need appropriate specifications and printer information to ensure the designs are produced correctly. (And enough time to do this all in!) 5) Need a Better Swag Strategy This is kind of my personal pet peeve, but we did talk about some kind of higher-level strategy regarding the swag art we produce for folks making swag since from the design team's standpoint it's rather ad-hoc: - Is there a place for discussions about how much swag we produce, the environmental impact, the strategic necessity of the swag being produced, etc. - Could we put some bounds on swag production to help manage it, for example, certain types of swag like T-shirts are okay to produce for premiere Fedora events (Flock, FUDcons) but for smaller events like FAD we won't do it or we'd have less impactful items available (like stickers?) - Could we consider alternatives to T-shirts, and maybe produce higher-quality shirts (like high quality polos) that are given 1 per contributor and per event make collectible pins available that could be put on the shirt or bags or other items? (E.g., like these sort of things: http://images.channeladvisor.com/Sell/SSProfiles/10033428/Images/pelk15.jpg ) - There are some regional differences in swag production; Tatica mentioned LATAM does not have more than one T-shirt run a year and not many shirts are produced. So any changes in policy would need to consider regional differences. Any other thoughts or ideas, please feel free to throw in!!! ~m
