To your point about brightness on your own wallpaper I toyed a bit in GIMP (via G'MIC) with your wallpaper here: http://little.kylerconway.com/uptime/%20Jonathan-Petruska-color-mod.png (hope that's okay).
My favorite part about your shapes is that they feel like paper cutouts. I amplified that effect somewhat above.
