Advice Request - GTK+ theming

 Hi,

 On a totally personal level, I've decided to hack Equinox Radiance
Glass GTK2+ theme to look a bit more like Fedora (basically make it look
like Clearlooks/Fedora).

 Equinox Radiance: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Equinox

 It appears that this is a Featured Theme in Ubuntu 10.4. I also know
it's a bad wave to transport such thing into the Fedora Realm, specially
from me since I'm not that Ubuntish...


 I was just wondering if there is any documentation regarding theming on
Fedora. Though this is like a hobby thing more to do on my free time,
anyone could point some useful docs regarding to GTK+ theming using
Fedora brand colors?

 Things like the colors for gnome-panel, buttons, windows frames etc
could be useful.

 As a last resort I'll hack Clearlooks/Fedora to get some values and
some guidance, but I was hoping also to bring something new into this.

 Currently Equinox isn't packaged for Fedora as far as I know, so I'll
also package it once I get the theme done. This is not exactly something
to be a part of Fedora distribution (as from my point of view, it's too
much Ubuntish), but it's my favourite theme, and I'll make it available
on my Fedora People Resources.

I think it would be better to start from scratch and take the Equinox
GTK engine instead :) Maybe try to google "how to make a gtk theme" :)

And I think we could make a great Fedora standard theme from Equinox -
it isn't too much Ubuntu ;) And Equinox is a really lovely theme
engine.

Kris,

 don't take me wrong, if I had far more time and some more knowledge on
this field, I would for sure embrace it. Since 2004 I don't produce a
line o code for whatever purpose. 

 I do love Radiance and Equinox (after most likely comes Aurora). This
is something just to be different. Depending on this hack goes, maybe in
the future we can look into that with more time. For me, right now it's
just a hack.

 My skills with open source tools are very poor... and most of my
previous contact with Linux was through remote consoles or RS232. This
is something new to me 8)

 Going in such a large project would for sure handicap me in other
fields where I need to stay focused.

 What I can suggest for this list and for your Team (mizmo and nicu feel
free to kick in about this) is through Fedora Marketing (in which I can
for sure help) launch a campaign for a new Fedora theme to all artists
that are across several communities around. Maybe approach those
communities with a good well though project and try to get people
enrolled. I understand most people are running tight schedules, but
could be something to do after F13 release in the scope of F14.

 That I can help with in the future for sure. I can make myself
available also for packaging a given number of themes or engines if
required for the design team, as I am aware that packaging is one area
were we could all use some extra help.

 As for going solo on new theme... from the coding part (with time and
some trial/error experiences) could eventually pull something, but from
the artwork point of view, I don't see myself as a very creative person
or skilled with the mainstream tools for FOSS. So possibly the most
important part of the theme would go :(

 I'll go hack a bit Clearlooks and Fedora GTK/Metacity themes to get
some concepts like colors used for bars, mouse over, pressed, effects,
etc and see if I can collect there enough data.

 On a personal level I'm thinking on inserting maybe a couple of slick
silver lines, but because, I like silver 8)

 I'll blog it once it's done, so should pop out in planet.

I think we should try to focus on a new standard theme for Fedora :)
Clearlooks is too much upstream, we should make something which make
us stand out from the crowd :)

as of now, but I'd totally welcome designs to implement (SVG is good
enough for me, preferably one dark and one bright version) ;-) Install
thewidgetfactory to see in one place what widgets are in need of
theming ;-)

But the people over at Desktop Team (or so I understand it) are not in
favour of Fedora using different gtk engine from upstream (which is one
of the reasons for why Nodoka's development is stalled now)...

There are two (well, counting feedback, actually three) ways how to
help:
a) send patches to code fixing bugs or implementing new functionality
(you can send them here or attach to a track ticket, we don't have a
specific mailing list for Nodoka). For the currently developed code, use
gtk-engine-0.8.x-rework branch in Nodoka's git [1]

b) send designs for widgets not yet designed for the reworked modern
design (I currently have buttons and entries) or completely new style
(that one preferably with one-word name ;-))

That's for release tarbals. Git source is as
minimal as possible (i.e.
whatever can be autogenerated, isn't included), so you need to install
autotools (not sure which packages exactly, but probably autoconf and
automake) and run 

$ autoreconf --install 

from within gtk-nodoka-engine directory first (supposing you are on
master or the ...-rework branch; IIRC the older branches have the
autotools config somehow incomplete and partly broken...). Then you can
run the usual ./configure and make, but I prefer to run ./configure and
make dist, and then use the newer tarbal to rebuild the rpms -- that way
you can get it correctly installed for usage (however, as the master
and ...-rework branches are incomplete [design wise], I would advise
against usage -- even though it is usable and should not cause any
crashes, it would look odd...)

Rules? No. Limitations -- yes: even though the code is written in C and
we can get pretty wild, it's still not a good thing to draw outside of
widget's allocated space (thus to draw shadows, we need to make the
actual drawing of the widget a bit smaller,...), the more complex you
design the widget, the slower it will draw, think about usability --
does it stand out enough, does it fit well with the rest of the
theme, ...? Also, we are not supposed to know the progress of
progressbars we are drawing, so advanced effects on their fill are out
of question, ... 

I'm not aware of templates either, I just use things like masks, rounded
rectangles, circles and gradients (all of these are easily replicated
with Cairo in the drawing code when implementing it).

I attach an SVG with the widgets I originally designed for the code you
just built, to have some reference/example, plus you can get more SVG
examples on the bottom of the 0.8.x brainstorm page (these are mostly
obsoleted older designs, but for reference good enough):

Ahh... a little misunderstanding. Their progressbars are not awesome at
all in the meaning I meant... I mean, that because I don't know what's
the progress, I must draw the fill as if it filled whole progressbar, as
opposed to what can be seen e.g. in the attached SVG.
