Hey,
Does anybody want to take lead on the F26 wallpaper?
Thus far we have:
Technologist inspiration: Alexander Graham Bell
Pinboard: https://www.pinterest.com/mairindubh/fedora-26-bell/

Hello all.
Here is an idea: record the sound wave of the word "Fedora" and do something similar to this one: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/69383650490467977/
With a bluish background instead of yellowish could work.

For some reason that link isn't getting me to an image. Something like this? https://i1.wp.com/sketch.kylerconway.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/fedora-b...
I was able to see the image I think (trees). The sound wave form i uploaded is me saying Fedora. We just need happy little trees now, yes?
Cool!
Yes, I think the next piece would be to build it out of trees. I would have it horizontal rather than diagonal in that case so the reflection works out?

I could throw some mist over it. That would, i think. add to the reflection. I may be able to tree it up... Have we an XCF of what we have so far?

Don't have an XCF -- but I suspect you can export from the inkscape svg at any size you'd like to further manipulate.
This is a quick mock-up in inkscape -- https://i1.wp.com/sketch.kylerconway.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Selectio...
The suggested inspiration image -- https://68.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m0pruykEM51rryvfyo1_500.jpg -- is a much different ratio than the resulting wallpaper will be. I'm wondering if that causes problems for this? Probably not if handled correctly.
Probably you could shrunk the yellow spaces and get rid of the red one, that should give you a more easy 'wallpaper sized' image.

Thanks, Maria. That will work visually.
A little setup to a few questions from the purist in me... 1. Here's the audio used to turn into a visual wave form via audacity: http://little.kylerconway.com/uptime/fedora.oga 2. Here's a visual breakdown of where the syllables fall within that wavform: http://little.kylerconway.com/uptime/fedora-wave-form.png
The question: I know we're ultimately wanting to end up with a purely visual product based off of a wav form, but do we want to: 1. Artificially truncate the form and/or 2. Artificially add peaks or valleys that are absent?
Maybe it's my pronunciation (though I tried it with a hard *pirate* "ARR" and it still didn't register very differently).
Tell me not to be a concept purist.

How about blurring the wave to give a mist illusion?
Hi Kyle,
I think just trees without the wave look better now, and I would add more of them to create an illusion of a real forest, not random trees on the shore. Having done that it might work to incorporate the wave into the trees, and by that I mean make it appear and disappear with an illusion of interweaving and moving forward and through the forest. Once again - love the idea!

Update here: http://little.kylerconway.com/uptime/fedora26-wav-fade.png
Thoughts: * Can I get away with that much purple? * I like the distance and the imbalance to the right, but feel like I need a bigger (i.e. balancing) element on the left. ** I also feel like that might take away from the serenity of the image and I'm not sure what to put there... (e.g. a foreground tree?)
Here's just something I threw together. I think it works nicely. https://goo.gl/photos/9VgEX8phci346yBu5

Of course, it's a rough cut. I've played with masking and colour balance. This is more of a final version. http://imgur.com/a/8TSkn This is if we want to do material design, which, like pretty much all flat design, does play nicely with Gnome 3.

I agree with Maria's feedback - I think I'd ditch the wave - we don't want to be *too* literal. That the trees are an actual sound wave is I think an elegant little trick, and I think adding the wave form in sort of loses the elegance / minimalism of it.

We can keep it, but as I said before not just running a blur on it. I suggested the use of a filter, see attachment. It works best if you add before some nodes to the path and then jitter it a bit, see under extensions paths. Then duplicate it with the filter and give it a bit of an offset
I worry more about the strange colors
br gnokii
btw. I would love the attached pics are not that huge 90MB for an svg?

We're pretty open at this point. The broader theme / inspiration is Alexander Graham Bell and the technology he worked on, so long as your design is related it's fair game at this point.

Any feedback on my design. It isn't very minimalist, but it did match the theme. I think it looks more like what would be used as a supplemental though

Ah I thought you were still working on another version so was waiting for you to send a link to that. The version I saw is here: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/design-team@lists.fedoraprojec...
I like the color palette; I really love the sci-fi style of the trees. Definitely goes with the technology theme. I'm not sure the white waveform running in front of the trees works - it seems kind of noisy and hard to parse - but where it's just on top of the water and horizon it gives a kind of neat glow effect, and I wonder if that might look neat behind the trees instead.
I think the trees are probably a bit too regular and you're going to want a bit more diversity between them so they don't look like clones.
I think the scene is maybe a bit bare and might do with some more elements to the texture of the sky and water. The clouds in the inspiration photo are an example of an environmental element that might work.
Hope this helps! Thanks for the mockup, it's neat!

This is a potential version I worked on. The bg may be too busy, and or white in the center. http://imgur.com/a/8TSkn. I will work on it when I get back to my dorm. The fog is separate from the spectrum, and can be adjusted independently. I feel that the original colours to the BG were better, but "blend mode -> color (or 'hue')" is a raster layer setting. I'm assuming keeping it in inkscape for scale-ability is a must.

Also, I really want to ripple the bottom. To me, it looks like it is reflecting on ice, not water. I will edit the colours of the trees to add variance.

Here are two rough designs for wallpaper that I have been working on. I'm not particular impressed with either, but I thought I'd add them into the mix.
The first is a waveform, placed into the centre of the document, with separate Magenta and Blue layers to produce a layered effect. These are placed against a radial gradient of Fedora Blue and Fedora Dark Blue. The waveform does not have any specific meaning, I just used it to test the design. https://i.imgur.com/JhI7CEq.jpg
The second is an illustrative design. The waveform section is of me speaking the word 'Fedora'. I created a path around the waveform to generate an outline. This has then been filled to create a hill, on which I intend to place a flat illustration of Edinburgh Castle, in reference to Alexander Graham Bell's birthplace. The reflection in the lower half of the image is also part of the waveform. https://i.imgur.com/Dj4F9R5.jpg
I'm not particularly happy with either, as I stated above. I'm going to take the second design and tweak it to make it much more subtle and less busy. A desktop image shouldn't get in the way of the users day to day activities, which I believe this does.
I appreciate any feedback and hopefully I'll have something better to show soon.

Hi Tavis!
I think without a deeper meaning I wouldn't push this one further - I think you need the deeper meaning to push it into a more compelling visual.
This is really neat! I think the intentional gradient bandings, esp the radial ones from the moon, are a really nice illustrative effect and pretty harmonious with Fedora's brand style too. I especially love the radial gradients because they kind of visualize the moonlight in a wave form, light waves as a sort of contrast to the sound waves. Ialso like how you used a mountain/hill to help represent the wave form. Some suggestions / ideas:
- To make the waveform more complete as in the inspiration pictures from the pinboard, I'd lighten the reflection so it's less weak, so you could get the impression of the shape of the waveform rather than the top half of the form / above-water half dominating quite so much.
- I'm not sure the texture on the water is the right one. Somehow it kind of clashes with the radial blocks in the sky. It also kind of has (At least for me) a weird 3D kind of affect making the water look curved in a way that doesn't make sense. I guess, ripples on water need a catalyst, right? It might be neat because you have radial gradients in the sky, to mirror that in the water a bit with circular-ish texture on the water and maybe add some object to generate the waves.... or as an alternate emulate still water at night. Also, is this fresh water or ocean? If it's ocean I guess you could have waves but I don't see any peaks or crashes on the shore. (I got the impression of it being fresh water inland somehow)
I really like the color palette on this one.
I'm not particularly happy with either, as I stated above. I'm going to take the second design and tweak it to make it much more subtle and less busy. A desktop image shouldn't get in the way of the users day to day activities, which I believe this does.
Totally agreed, it needs to be subtle, I think you're on the right track.
~m
Hi Máirín!
Thank you for the kind words!
I'll take everything you have suggested on board. I'll have something more palatable and less busy for tomorrow.
To make the waveform more complete as in the inspiration pictures from the pinboard
You just want to see how skilled I am with the path tool... heads up... I'm not!

I fully understand where you are coming from in regards to the water texture. I've removed it and it looks much better. I'm going to play around with it a bit to see if I can make something more seamless instead of the jarring texture I was using before. I'm aiming for an inland lake, akin to those in the Scottish Highlands.
I'm also thinking of leaving the castle out of the design for now, purely for the sake of simplicity.
During my break I also made this draft wallpaper design, https://i.imgur.com/umD1Qsa.jpg. I quite like it's simplicity, but it reminds me of F24's default wallpaper a bit too much. I'll stick to the illustrative design.
Thank you again! Tavis

I think it's too plain, it needs more oomph. I like that you made the waveform circular. Can you push it more? Rather than a solid thin line on a relatively flat background, can you create more visual interest, and somehow connect it to a deeper idea?

Ah I thought you were still working on another version so was waiting for you to send a link to that. The version I saw is here: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/design-team@li sts.fedoraproject.org/message/TRIZJSMNPX7VFTYWE5RPETRQ3CWFJ254/

I think it's too plain, it needs more oomph. I like that you made the waveform circular. Can you push it more? Rather than a solid thin line on a relatively flat background, can you create more visual interest, and somehow connect it to a deeper idea?

Hi Tavis!
I think this one here has the potential to get mixed with the treeline idea to serve as pattern in the background. So can you try to repeat it several times and overlay it so it gets a pattern?
I think without a deeper meaning I wouldn't push this one further - I think you need the deeper meaning to push it into a more compelling visual.
To make the waveform more complete as in the inspiration pictures from the pinboard, I'd lighten the reflection so it's less weak, so you could get the impression of the shape of the waveform rather than the top half of the form / above-water half dominating quite so much.
I'm not sure the texture on the water is the right one.

Nope as we have to avoid putting our branding to it, so that our distribution can be derived. That is why there never goes any logo, fedora trademark etc there.

One of the main things downstream distributions seem to do is replace the wallpaper — see Korora or Chapeau. I'd like to at least consider the possiblity of moving the main wallpaper to a fedora-specific package to give us more flexibility.
Of course, only if it works visually.
I melded the colours together a bit better.

Kyle, like the theme your going with. Mine is so happy and bright, and yours is pretty much the antithesis. I don't think Fedora's ever released a bright wallpaper as the default before. I feel like mine is just more of what we would use as a supplemental, unless we want to go bright this time.

Thanks, Jonathan.
To your point about brightness on your own wallpaper I toyed a bit in GIMP (via G'MIC) with your wallpaper here: http://little.kylerconway.com/uptime/%20Jonathan-Petruska-color-mod.png (hope that's okay).
My favorite part about your shapes is that they feel like paper cutouts. I amplified that effect somewhat above.
Yeah, the paper cutout look is what defines material design, which is perhaps the thing I'm most proficient at. That's why it pops up all over my desings. Like the effect. Looks awesome. Only reason I'm staying away from the Gimp is scalability. I'm not sure target render sizes, so I don't know exactly how big to make it.

Hi Kyle!
I really do like the gradient you introduced in the next email, it give more depth in my opinion. I don't mind the wave so much, my other comment still stands - we need to add more trees or to make them more united to give it more visual uniformity. Right now they look a bit random, especially the round tree might seem out of place. Maybe try making them more uniform? For reference, check out these photos: https://mir-s3-cdn-cf.behance.net/project_modules/max_1200/d334d348282455.58..., https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/17/24/ce/1724ce569c0135da842c49e5e..., https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/6e/9c/0f/6e9c0f47fe285436886ca6a65...
I'm not sure how literal we want to be with the forest, but I'd try start with smaller trees right on the 'shore' and put bigger ones behind. See here: http://imgur.com/a/k6cxF
There are a bunch of nice tree silhouettes that we could add here: https://openclipart.org/search/?query=tree
Also maybe make them less black?
What do you think?

Hi Kyle,
I like the direction you're going! And maybe not *all* the same trees? The wave got lost in there somewhere, don't you think? So I'd suggest less trees, a bit more diversity, so it would look more natural.

Hello everyone!
Sorry I haven't frequented this thread recently. I've had a few real world issues to sort out, but I should be able to check in a bit more often now.
I've been reading through the posts in the thread and also taken the feedback given from my previous submission to generate a new design. I attempted to generate something in blender, using a waveform, but I need to brush up on my skills, maybe for F27!
Again, this design follows the threads' trend of incorporating a waveform within the image, I have used a waveform of myself speaking the word 'Fedora' again. This design has a significantly reduced number of visual elements that could be distracting to an end user. I've also moved the waveform from the centre of the design to the lower third, it seems to be better placed here. I've attempted to stick to Fedora colours where possible.
Here are three mock-ups of my current wallpaper design in varying aspect ratios.
1024*768 - 4:3 https://i.imgur.com/rU4kzEm.jpg 2560*1440 - 16:9 https://i.imgur.com/1wRQWMC.jpg 2560*1600 - 16:10 https://i.imgur.com/IYgYYVk.jpg
I'm open to feedback as there is probably something amazingly obvious I have overlooked!
I also want to add that I love the atmosphere in this thread. Ideas bouncing around, seeing everyone's differing approaches to a brief, it's really interesting!
Kindest Regards, Tavis
I do like the colour scheme of mine, which was most likely highly inspired by the fact that I almost invariably use the lighter colour supplemental wallpapers (still not sure what our official term is for those), but I will probably group everything and play with colour effects.

Hey,
I really think this is the strongest candidate and I want to try to get something packaged for Alpha if possible. (It may be too late at this point.)
I played around with this (although it took hours - was painful, for some reason inkscape rendering was *extremely* slow, probably all of the nodes on the trees, so I had to rebuild it in pieces into a new file) and came up with this after some Gimping -
I'm going to ask Luya to package this unless there are any objections?

I know the issue with slow. On my 2007 all in one, if I had every layer visible and changed something, Inkscape would actually freeze. That's one reason everything I did took so long. I'd get an hour's worth of work done, forget to save (I know, shame on me), view all layers to see what it looks like, and all I have to do is accidentally forget to hide a layer and nudge something to loose it all. Opacity changes also had to be done with the layer hidden.
