Hi everybody!
Now that F25 is out, it's never too early to start thinking about F26. :) Has anybody seen any cool designs lately that maybe could serve as some inspiration for Fedora 26? We seem to have a recurring theme now about the intersection of technology and nature, so someideas along that would be fitting, but we're of course always open for new ideas. Anything you've got is more than welcome!
I'm going to look around and send stuff to this thread as I find things.
~m
And just to reply to myself... :)
1) One thing I'm thinking about maybe is texture. For example, iconic symbols that are normally very clean / aseptic in a very texturized sort of hand-drawn / natural form...
https://www.behance.net/gallery/44947139/Snejana-Hill-Cosmetics
2) Another idea - beauty in imperfection - this series takes a hardware flaw - basically flawed lenses - and takes that weakness and turns it around into producing something beautiful:
https://www.behance.net/gallery/45012957/Chromatic
3) And yet another idea - playing with light - I love how this one uses both light and texture - https://mir-s3-cdn-cf.behance.net/project_modules/1400/baa4fc45298479.582c20...
The full set is here: https://www.behance.net/gallery/45298479/Ikea-Light-animations
Any of these strike a chord?

Getting started early! I love it! Thanks for kicking this off Mo!

I kinda like this one. While the examples in the gallery are very stark (black on white), I do see how we could use this for inspiration for the wallpaper, as it could be translated to something that blends with the background. The iconic symbols would also be a good mechanism to try to tell bit more of a story with the wallpaper, and tie into a possible theme for the release.

This one is the easiest IMHO to be converted into a background. the close-ups of the light bouncing around do make a great abstract image.

This one is the hardest for me to invisage how we are going to mke this abstract enough to be a wallpaper (when compared to recent wallpapers). Although taking the light and textureportions of it, it might also be fun to play with.
cheers, ryanlerch

Perhaps taking #2 and adding texture (and perhaps more structure).
For my benefit, what are the general goals (or the boundaries) of fedora wallpapers?
Hello everyone
Are these references you see are for wallpapers or is it something more general?

Hi Salva,
The references are for creating the default wallpaper for Fedora 26 from which other pieces are typically derived (media art, release party posters, etc.)
Some specs for the wallpaper (we should probably have this up on the wiki somewhere; if anybody has time/interest to document this in the wiki it'd be awesome):
- Must be a Fedora-compatible license [1]. We have always created our own default wallpaper and licensed it, usually Creative Commons Attribution.
- The color must be mostly blue. Fedora blue is #3c6eb4 and Fedora dark blue is #294172 [2]. Historical reasons for this; we usually get a deluge of complaints if we experiment with other colors, and the color scheme does help identifying our desktop.
- We generally get the most positive comments about abstract wallpapers. So abstract is probably the best bet.
- We as of late have like pursuing themes dealing with the intersection of technology and nature. For example, the F25 wallpaper designed by Mary Shakshober brilliantly depicts an abstract flower (symbol of nature) with simultaneously soft/ephemeral/organic as well as a hard/technical/shutter-like appearance with overlapping gradients.
- Perusing past wallpapers might be helpful to get an idea of the style, too: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Wallpapers
- We have a famous scientist as the theme for the wallpaper. For F25 we started with A and decided on Archimedes. The visuals of F25's wallpaper were inspired by Archimedes' screw.
- Sizes: we have 4 sizes of wallpapers we ship: - Standard 4096 x 3072 (4k) - Wide 3840 x 2400 - Normalish 3840 x 3072 - TV Wide 3840 x 2160
- Other specs - must be produced in Fedora software; typically this means Inkscape and sometimes Gimp.

okay Thanks for the info. I have not yet ordered the logos by mail. I've been following this thread. I was already thinking about it.
In my work we usually start from a breafing, from ideas and concepts that we want to associate with the brand and then it is when we work on aesthetic lines that reinforce those ideas. Ideas or concepts to reinforce for Fedora 26 could be many: - A kinder version? -Most modern? - Human? "For all kinds of people?"
Those who have time in this can guide us to what concepts can revolve around version 26. What can differentiate it? Once we have a couple of clear concepts, we can work to see how best to express them with a graphic line.
An example: I am seeing that in many of your references you are talking about textures, even motifs and strokes by hand, brushes. This would be worth enhancing if we want to do something closer, more human, something more emotional. It may be fine.
If we seek to transmit technology, speed, future, progress ... just as we would have to go the other way. A cooler style but also very attractive. The last reference you have shown may be an example of this. http://trollback.com/world-science-festival-2012/ This can also work. This reference is the way I am investigating. Concepts or ideas of this: Space, silence, adventure, discovery, advance, remoteness, infinite ...
Anyway, I do not know if it will work with blue backgrounds ... I'll see.
If you serve these considerations, great.

There is one big guideline I forgot -
No Fedora logos on the wallpaper!

My favorite old release desktop and themes was the Sun one. Maybe revisiting and updating it? [Is Fedora 26 a short release cycle or a long one? If it is a short one I was figuring this would be a good way to meet deadlines?]

All strike a chord in some way (I really like 1 & 2) -- scrolling down the page on #1 I came across this:

It's different than the black&white up front. As mini-landscapes, you get the texture via brush strokes and an artificiality from the hard stops creating the circle. Any thoughts on repeating textures?

I love these - this kind of mix of nature and artificiality is something I haven't seen before! With MyPaint or Krita (or even MyPaint brushes in Gimp 2.9.x) we could easily replicate this kind of paintbrush texture too.
What do you mean by repeating textures?
~m
Wrong term ... More like repeating the circles a lot in a grid (the term is escaping me the moment). I'd use tile clone in inkscape to achieve this. I agree the brush strokes would be reproducible.
A technology *feel* could join the circles. I've been working on this type of concept for a while. Here's one iteration:

Hi,
Time to get you the results of the questionaire, there was only 10 votes so far and its 50/50 see attachment.
As I have not voted yet, I just vote for Bell because I think its easier to visualize, things like sound waves could be the thing to go.

Sure, send it out! Looking at visual styles now we don't need it yet, but the subject matter would come from the inventor so we'll need that ASAP.
