Hi everybody :)
Before the holidays I did a few very impromptu live design sessions/chats using streaming / video chats (the first was on twitch but I didn't like how one-way it was, so subsequent ones were on Jitsi.) We did some live digital painting, a design critique session, and also a Discourse theming session, with a lot of fun and random chatter and banter :)
I'd like to continue this on a more regular / planned basis, maybe every two weeks, and I am inviting my current set of interns and mentees to join in too (hoping it can be a teaching tool for them!) The idea is anyone participating can bring some design work they are working on for some critique / advice / etc. and if nobody has anything to show off I will always have some Fedora design ticket or thing I'm working on that we can look at as a back up. I want it to be very laid-back / chill but also a super-respectful, calm, encouraging, and safe environment. All of the Fedora code of conduct [1] rules apply.
If this is something you'd be interested in participating in or if you have any ideas or concerns around it, let me know. I am hoping to schedule the first session sometime next week.
Cheers, ~m

This was super interested and cool. I'm glad you're doing more and definitely encourage anyone interested to attend.
This sounds like such a great idea! WHat would be the platform used fo meeting: video or chat?

I would love to join, too, if the time difference allows it :) If not, would the meetings be recorded?

Hey Ella!

That I'm not sure of. I think we'd need the consent of all the participants to do it. I didn't record any of the pre-holiday sessions because I wanted to keep it kind of informal & loose, but I'd be open to recording at least some of the sessions if all participating were agreed or if we marked it as a session to be recorded ahead of time so folks not comfortable being on camera could either plan not to attend or watch with camera off or something like that.
I think sometimes when recording is on, folks act a little differently *or* they forget and then regret when the recording gets posted (not for any bad reasons or anything like that).
I know having recordings helps with accessibility though across timezones. One potential solution would be something like on Twitch where a stream recording is available for say a few days after the live session then expires and goes away. That might be a good solution?
We could also do something like the Fedora Social Hour where the time block is staggered every other session so if you can't make one block logistically the other could be feasible?
What do you think?
Cheers, ~m
Hi everybody!
I've got a nice banner for the series created (see attached :-) ) and also set up calendar slot grid on whenisgood - so if anyone interested in joining up, if you could please visit this link, put your Fedora Account System (FAS) id in the comments if you don't mind, and select the times that would work for you over the next two weeks, I would appreciate it:
http://whenisgood.net/design-team-sessions
Based on what seems to be the time that works best for everyone including my core group of interns / mentees, let's pick at least one time (if not two so we could have an Atlantic time and a Pacific time) where the most of us can make it and set the regular times moving forward.
Cheers! ~m
Hi everybody!
Thank you for replying to the scheduling survey; we have a time! :)
Wednesday, January 20 at 7 PM / 1900 UTC. [1].
Fedocal entry: https://apps.fedoraproject.org/calendar/design/2021/1/20/#m9895
I have an .ical generated from Fedocal attached to this email. The I will send out an email closer to the time as a reminder and also to see if anybody has any specific work they'd like feedback on or specific topics. If not, we will fall back to the F34 & F35 wallpaper designs.
MEETING CADENCE
I would like to use this time slot moving forward every two weeks, so the second session would be February 3rd, the third session would be 17, so on and so forth. There were 3 folks (the minimum possible) who could not make the Jan 20 specific timeslot. If this timeslot during other weeks moving forward is impossible for you to make and you feel strongly you'd like to be able to attend, please reach out to me off-list and we can certainly investigate an alternating time schedule.
MEETING RECORDING POLICY
I'd like to propose we make the recording available only until the next live meeting, at which time the recording of the old meeting will be deleted. I think this is a reasonable mix of allowing folks who cannot make it live the ability to participate while keeping some informality level to the meeting since it's not meant to be a permanent record. Let me know here on list or off-list if you have any concerns about this (I am happy to summarize off-list concerns here to preserve anonymity of anyone raising them for everyone's benefit.)
MEETING SOFTWARE
- We'll use Jitsi via Matrix: https://jitsi.riot.im/sCKrJFTGlxUYsIwkZumatrixorgihpwhaq9pq8 - The video chat will be attached to our Matrix room: https://matrix.to/#/#fedora-design:matrix.org - Firefox is recommended except if you have multi-screen and want to screenshare, in which case use Chromium or Chrome
These links will change after the Fedora element.io server becomes available imminently (hopefully before our first meeting?? :) )
MEETING SAFETY
I intend to maintain a laid-back / chill but also a super-respectful, calm, encouraging, and safe environment. All of the Fedora code of conduct rules [2] apply and I have zero qualms about enforcing them to keep this event highly-inclusive and safe for all.
Looking forward to seeing you all there!
Cheers,
~m
