Sparkleshare set up for design team files!

Hi team,

I've been spending some time this week working on our collaboration
tools to see if we can't make it a lot easier to work together on
designs.

As mentioned earlier, we have a test imageboard up at
http://publictest04.fedoraproject.org/artboard which is I think a good
place to put work up to get feedback on, and to help other folks with
their work by providing comments on it.

I spent some time yesterday and trying to set up Sparkleshare with our
fedorahosted repo. In the past, this did not work because fedorahosted
was running a version of git that was too old to work with Sparkleshare.
But our git was updated recently, so it now works. With Alex Hudson and
Hylke's help we have new packages of Sparkleshare available for Fedora
13, Fedora 14, and Fedora 15 - based on my quick survey it seems like
this will accommodate everyone that responded. 

I'm in the process of copying all of our shared files from
fedorapeople.org/groups/designteam over into the Sparkleshare repo. Once
that's finished, I think it would make sense to remove the files from
our groups directory, and find another use for it. I will reply to this
message once all of our files are available in the Sparkleshare repo.

If you'd like to try out Sparkleshare yourself then, I've put together a
HOWTO on it. Please let me know if you run into any trouble with the
instructions - they *should* work on F13+ but I haven't tested it on all
the different versions:

If you are asking yourself, 'what is Sparkleshare? huh?' the short
answer is that it is a free and open source alternative to Dropbox that
makes it so you'll have a special folder on your computer, and anything
you copy to that folder, everyone on the design team who has it set up
will be able to see. This should make it easier for us to share our
work, especially source files since they are a pain to upload and we
sometimes forget. Now we won't have to remember - as long as you keep
them in the design team folder, we'll all have access.

Also, could I ask a big favor? If you have design-team related files in
your fedorapeople.org directory, would you mind copying them over to the
Sparkleshare design team folder? That way we'll all have easier access.

Has anyone gotten a chance to try Sparkleshare yet? [1] I haven't gotten
any feedback and I haven't seen any commits other than mine.

I've poked around on it and I, for one find it MUCH easier to follow.  The old 
posting things to a wiki in pages I could never find always confused me.  I 
think sparkleshare looks very promising by comparison, although so far I 
haven't had anything to post or, well, share.  But the first impressions, 
certainly, are good.

Just my thoughts as an interested observer.

A few days ago I tried following your instructions, but something went
wrong with the SSH keys. Probably has to do with the fact that I tried
setting up SparkleShare a few months ago and failed fantastically.

I won't have much time in the coming days to troubleshoot this, but as
soon as I can I'll try to look for a fix (read: bug you about it). ;)

The SparkleShare
folder should work fine under KDE too, correct? Now
that F15 is out, I'm having to finally make up my mind whether I should
go with GNOME 3 or KDE 4.6, so in case I choose the latter I'd like to
know that. :P

I don't know if it will work under KDE or not. It does have a nautilus
component and I'm not sure that would work in KDE's file browser.

Hrm, looking at the wiki page [1] I have basically two concerns
 * it uses the same git repo we use for wallpaper packaging -- do you
   realize that thanks to that, people working on that will need to
   fetch the "whole" git repo? Same goes for sparkle share itself. The
   good thing about fedorapeople was that I didn't need to download all
   the "garbage" along with the stuff I want. Plus, I know it is
   mentioned on the wiki, but I still fear people will mess up the
   *-backgrounds directories...

Curious, do you know this for a fact or are you writing this based on my
email to Danny? Because I seriously have no idea. It works on OS X, and
there's no nautilus on OS X, so there is a chance it could work in KDE.

Technically yes, even with the git history. Practically, I think it
would be better to have just another git repo instead of whole new
project (after all, it's design-team's most visible project), I'm not
sure what the infra team would say about that though (I'm not familiar
enough with the rules on fh.o to know whether they cover this case and
if so, how).

nautilus. However I have trouble making it work:

Permission denied (publickey).

As you see it insists on using "git" user name. I need "mso" for it

And final nitpicking. It's written in C#?! Ugh. Can't people use sane
languages instead of weird bas.ard child of C++, Java and M$? I'm
really starting to feel that people at GNOME are heading in the exactly
opposite direction than I'd like in more ways than one.

Hylke has confirmed this isn't true. In my earlier email on the topic to
Danny I think I made it clear I had no clue. From Hylke:

"you don't need nautilus at all. it's only for the nautilus extension,
which provides an entry in the right click menu to check out older
versions of the document, or copy a weblink (only works with
github/gitorious atm)"

1) This error has absolutely nothing to do with XFCE vs GNOME vs KDE.

2) You can simply put your username @ in the field for the repo location. So you can do
mso(a)foobar.baz/qux.git 
and it will use the 'mso' username. You can also go into the .git/config directory
of the repo and change it there.

Do you just want the backgrounds? I am very happy to set up a separate repo (maybe
'fedora-backgrounds' ?) for them if as maintainer you are okay with that.

I have been in the process of trying to set up a clone of the repo in our
fedorapeople/groups/designteam space so individual files could be downloaded without a
full clone, but I still have a few issues to work out.

I switched to "testing sparkleshare" mode. It's an error from
sparkleshare (as printed on terminal) after I followed the instructions
on wiki, I'm not making any assumptions here WRT used DE.

I can if I work with git directly (and I do so already for e.g. the
backgrounds, echo-icon-theme, fedora packaging, ...), but I don't know,
how to do that with SparkleShare.

That's a separate problem from what I've been discussing in this mail,
sorry for the little mix-up. So to better explain the two
separate problems:
 * since the repo is big, I want, when using sparkleshare, to clone it
   to location specified by me (pointing to extern HDD where I have
   enough space). Yes, I can workaround that with bind mounts but I'd
   expect more user-friendly solution from such app.
 * for the backgrounds I'd like to have a smaller repo
   (fedora-backgrounds is OK with me) that does not have the files
   supposed to be worked on with sparkleshare.

You can download individual files from the cgit web interface already,
but you cannot push unless you have full clone. I'm not sure I follow
what are you trying to achieve here.
