Anaconda, the comic book

Hi folks,

I found some neat comic templates from http://designcomics.org/ that are
public domain so I started putting together a comic strip of a user
installing Fedora - using Anaconda along the way - just to get a
high-level idea of the sequencing of screens and what might make sense
for a user at each stage. 

The comics include some light mockups of each screen the user goes
through - they may not have all the necessary details but they'll give a
gist. The order may not be feasible in Anaconda today - I think that's
okay. We could probably start from how it would make most sense to a
user experiencing it, and then figure out the logistics once we're happy
with what we mapped out for the user... making some trade-off decisions
for feasibility when necessary.

I hope this makes sense? With a lot of the UI mockups so far we've been
doing deep dives on particular sections so I thought a more holistic
approach would help keep things in order.

I think it's a good idea. Because everyone knows comics are fun. There should be
something like "OH, NOES!", "BAM!", "ZAP!",
"BANNGGG!", bright colors, you know, the spelling, comics stuff...

"'Andrea' isn't taken!" made me laugh.

I want to do an enterprise storage user one too that goes through the
storage filter ui.

I think it's a great idea, but I have to ask... What's with the hotdog? :)

As much as I love the line "Fedora tastes great with ketchup!" I have
to wonder how serious you are with this? ;)

Anyway, should we comment on the comics themselves or on the design of
the installer? If the latter, here are two things I noticed after
skimming it:

- Why does she have to click her mouse to log in on the Live version?
- "Please wait while we examine your disk drive(s)" is pretty long,
what's wrong with "Examing disk drives..." ?

As for the comic idea:

- Woah, Design Comics is excellent!
- What do you want to use this for? Is it "just for" a blog post or do
you really want to use it as a usability review?
- If it's to be used as a review, i'm not sure if the Windows bashing
is a really necessary. I'm guessing, though, that you wanted Andrea to
have an incentive to try out Fedora?

She doesn't have to. But I noticed when I was teaching the girl scouts
using live USB media, they would always get confused at the login
screen. I think maybe the timeout is too long - maybe it should just
auto-login? You can click at the login screen though to override the
timeout and log in immediately, so that's why I'd added the click in
there, from watching the girls sit at that same screen, clicking away to
make it go away.

I like yours better! I think I just copied what the anaconda popup
dialog says today on that one.

Yeh isn't it! There's a zip file on the site called 'sources', that has
everything in one file. It's pretty easy to drag and drop them into
inkscape. I've been using the raster versions... the F14 version of
inkscape will auto-embed them!

It's more to think through and visualize the overall screen flow of
anaconda and make sure we're:

- asking things of the user in the right order
- accounting for edge cases (e.g. here we have someone who already has
windows on their machine. in a lot of thinking about the installer, i
think there's a tendency to assume a blank slate hard drive or a system
that has had linux installed previously.)
- not asking the user too much or putting him/her through an avoidable
amount of trouble.

Yeh, it really serves two purposes:

- give Andrea a reason to try Fedora
- outline how the installer experience works for someone who's got
Windows on their computer and doesn't want to blow it away

May be Andrea overhears some "cute" guys at work talking about Fedora and is
interested in trying it out an an experiment (and to be able to socialize
with them), but doesn't want to loose Windows?

That way you'd be portraying Fedora as a popular/viral distro (that the
"cool kids" use) and also give her another reason to try Fedora without
blowing Windoes away? May be she had also heard that "Linux was difficult to
use" by people in her book club?

Just a thought! Great job though! :D
