Hey there Design folks...
Some of you may have seen some of marketing-team's discussion on doing some stories about what's going on in Fedora. It has occurred to me that it would be super cool to do a piece on what the Design team is up to - particularly since we're really at the start of the cycle here, and it's a great time for people to get involved and come up to speed without it being crunch time. :)
Here's a bit of what I was thinking (subject to change - feel free to throw your own ideas out!) -
* Look at all the different projects / deliverables Design produces throughout the cycle - from concept to shipment of each release. How to get involved. * Tools! What are the tools used - perhaps even talk about Design Suite a bit. * Discuss doing things openly - with open tools, why this is important. * How can non-designers help? Feedback loop, etc.
I think it would be great as a four-part series (or... something to that effect), doing interviews with 4 different contributors (ideally, I could get four interviewers too, which would be awesome). It could be some great press-kit type stuff particularly for Design Suite, as well as hopefully assisting your team in picking up a few new contributors, and explaining to others what your process is. (Or even, "Why it's a much better time NOW to make requests, than 2 weeks before release!")
As to where it winds up - there are a few options. Other than being a blog series on planet - we could also work with red hat to get it on their press blog, which gets syndicated in some places where planet doesn't; we could turn it into a nice-looking document for press kit, etc., rather than being just "on the wiki" and "in a blog" which aren't as eye-candy. (Oh, the irony - I say we could, and I'd probably be filing the request with design to make the design interview / story look better. haha!) We could even look into maybe doing a magazine piece.... or print + video....
Anyway - thoughts? I can file a ticket if necessary - although most of the "ticket" here is on marketing, rather than design :)
I'd be happy to come to the design meeting this week and talk more about it, solicit some interviewees, etc. Shall I put it on the agenda?

Hello Robyn
Maybe we could set to continue the tomorrow meeting one hour and set something like a massive interview to talk about this. The question will be if the team has time after or before the meeting.
See ya

This sounds great, why don't you stop by our meeting tomorrow to give everyone an intro on it, then as Tatica suggested maybe we can meet to talk about it longer after the meeting?

I will stop by - unfortunately, the marketing meeting is directly following yours so I kind of need to attend that. :) BUT, I think we can at least work on talking about things / times / etc. - and I can take some feedback to the mktg meeting, and we can start going from there.
See you tomorrow... or technically... later today!

Definitely stop by... last week the meeting was short, less than half an hour, so we had plenty of time... this week the agenda is short again. Also, before the meeting many of us will be in the channel waiting.
See you tomorrow... or technically... later today!
Oh, for many of us today had a few productive hours already :D

There's actually an hour between them, isn't there? (If not my calendar is wrong)

We're at 2000UTC. We don't move with the time change, which may be why it is different from your calendar. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing_meetings

Here's a summary of the ideas we came up with during the design team meeting:
- Interview with Nicu Buculei on how he got started with Open Clip Art and also highlighting openclipart.org as a tool for designers (maybe have a sidebar on OCAL/Inkcape integration feature?), maybe explaining public domain and SVGs?
- Interview with Tatica Leandro on her Gimp podcasts and how they are used in SA high schools, and maybe do a highlight on using Gimp as a tool.
- Interview Luya Tshimbalanga on the Fedora-fr Muffin magazine project, show some screenshots of the design, maybe have a highlight on Scribus.
- Interview Jef van Schendel on how he got started with the design team via Design Team bounty, maybe highlight open office as a tool since he used that for his bounty?
- Martin Sourada / Nicu Buculei / Pierros Papadeas - interview on their presentation of the Fedora design team process at Libre Graphics Meeting 2010, maybe with a highlight on LGM and what it's about and its history?
- You could interview me too, since it seems no general Inkscape highlight in the list, I could talk about how I use Inkscape to create UI mockups and show some off for the article.
Does anybody else have an idea or want to volunteer for an interview? Ian, would you be willing to be interviewed on our brand book?
I think for each interview you could have a little sidebar for the highlighted tool talking about the upstream website and the install instructions for getting it on Fedora.

That is actually a really cool idea (sidebar on tool). :)
Sorry I've been lax on this - holiday weekend and I went down to Phoenix a few days early to meet with some folks from ASU on our we-should-definitely-know-this-week-if-we-can-use-their-facilities-for-FUDCon process. :DD
I'll try to pop into today's meeting - I'd like to schedule one meeting a week until we're done-ish. I think the list above is a really great set and I have no objections at all to that. If we could draw up a schedule today in the meeting - I'll take that list, put it on the wiki and get to work. ;)
Thanks everyone!
