I know it's a bit down-to-the-wire, but I (finally! ;)) finished a new revision of the beta wallpaper. It's up on the wiki now here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:F14-wallpaper-remix-em-light-rev1.png
I replaced the light spots/lens flare with a light streak/aurora effect.
I don't have the source file uploaded just yet - it's huge! - but I'm working on it and I'll post a link on the wiki ASAP.
See what you think!

Hi, Emily.
This one has got good colors! I looove the effect, however, the streak lines go across the rays, and I feel a little dissonance.

The left side of wallpaper remember some wallpapers of Windows and Mac. And to me the wallpaper is confuse, the left and right sides are completely differents, don't have harmony.

Hrm, not bad, but I like this one the best (and I'm already using it): https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:F14-wallpaper-remix-em-dark.png
IMHO the lens flare and darker colours work better than aurora and lighter colours.

It is something to think about, but when you release a product people expect something very unique. If that reminds you of one of your rivals at its visual identity, it is not something pretty good to the user that expects more. Linux community can show really well its features on unique designs. The wallpaper is really good and it was really well made (congrats to the creator), and I dont mind using it (thats for sure), but if we could just choose something that just dont go in to the flow of Aero, Leopard or Seven; "Going to a diffrent direction", thats, IMHO, is the best thing to do.

I think the aurora effect you created is gorgeous, absolutely stunning - but it just doesn't seem to fit the wallpaper, like others have noted. (I'd love to see us use it for Fedora 15 though!) I've been using your latest wallpaper all this weekend and today and it seems the aurora is a bit out-of-place and the base wallpaper is a bit too simplistic. (It kind of reminds me a bit of the Fedora 9 wallpaper actually; that one didn't go over so well :( )
So I poked around a bit with Kyle's original alpha file, adding in some bits and bobs from your file (mostly I used the base gradient to recolor the image), smoothing & streaking out the lines on the right background, and smoothing out where the lines pop out from the center of the object. Then I imported it into mypaint and used mypaint's brushes to add some electricity-like effects and then exported the effects as transparent layers back into gimp.
Do you think this is something we could use for beta? Or is it the wrong direction?

My main problem here is with the bright areas being too bright so they lose details, when this happen with one of my photos I get "damn! I borked it with overexposure", change the settings and shoot again (if there is something left to shoot, else just delete it).
But I like the concept and would like the image if it is darker and have more details visible.

I like the void. I think it fits better with the emergence concept, too. Emergent properties appear in unexpected ways due to the complex interactions of a system, and therefore don't appear to have an obvious source. Consequently, I think a hole provides a better visual metaphor.
But then I don't see it purely as emanating rays; I see solid structures in there, like looking down on a city full of skyscrapers and searchlights, or into a kaleidoscope. So, for me, the hole is just equivalent to the road, or the end of the tube; I don't expect anything to necessarily be there.
Of course, if someone made a wallpaper that had something in that space, and it was an improvement, I'd support it—great images trump good metaphors! But I think adding something just for the sake of filling that space would actually be a detraction.
Marc
I tried to put something in that space in my initial revision. If we keep the void, I think the emanating rays need to fade into it more gradually. The way it is now, it kinda draws your eye to the hole and then there's nothing there...

Well, obviously some of us (including me ;)) like having something in the middle. Personally, I think it is a bit jarring, and visually unsatisfying to leave it completely empty.
But then again, some of us don't like having something there. So, keeping that in mind, I managed to work up yet another revision - not to take away from mo's really nice version, but just to see where this one takes me ;) - and I tried this time to find a bit of a compromise... There's something in the middle, but it's not anything definite, and it's much more subtle than the big starburst/supernova effect I had before. See what you all think!

those are my favorites until now, it makes it shinny and tells me that the system is very clean and ready for me. like saying: "IM DONE!" or getting done.

I love Emily's new version as well. One of the problems it solves for me is the overall brightness and high energy of the revision that's on my desktop now. The crystal shards, graphite shafts, or whatever you prefer to call them are cool but the high contrast and density of the image there makes it harder to concentrate on or locate my desktop icons in that space. Emily's new iteration fixes that completely!

Personally, I'd go with rev2 -- rev1 feels too bright and busy. Can you perhaps try desaturating the blue a little?

I am with Martin here, rev2, without the bright spot stealing my attention focus and maybe less saturated colors. And then we can say we are done.
