gdm changes and the live cd
by Matthias Clasen
There are some changes in GDM and GNOME3 that affect our live cd setup,
and will require some changes:
GDM no longer has a keyboard or language chooser. They were mainly added
to cater to livecd must-choose-before login scenarios, but they proved
to be really problematic ever since we added them, since they cause a
conflict between multiple configuration sources (system keyboard layout
vs stored user configuration vs login screen choice, etc). Without these
choosers, it doesn't really make sense anymore to stop at the login
screen with a time login, and we should consider to just autologin
directly to the user session. The session will start in English, and
users who need a different language will have to select the language in
System Settings > Region and re-login. Keyboard configuration is less
problematic, since it can be changed without requiring a re-login.
We no longer show icons on the desktop, so there is no immediately
obvious place to show the 'install to hard disk' launcher. The
alternatives are to make it a favourite in the shell overview, or to add
it as a menuitem in the user menu. Both of these have some drawbacks
(the favourite does not display any text, leaving the user to guess from
the icon, the user menu requires a gnome-shell patch). An alternative
I'd like to propose is to simply autostart the installer. That will make
it hard to overlook, and seems to nicely emphasize the main role of the
live cd as a convenient way to install Fedora.
Thoughts ?

f15 and orca
by Jonathan Nadeau
Hello list,
I have just downloaded and installed f15 and that went well. But once
I got it installed I noticed that the orca screen reader is not
installed by default. So I went ahead with some help and installed
Orca through the add/remove software. Once it was installed and I
tried to run Orca it said that it was missing the accessibility bus. I
tried to search for this accessibility bus with the add/remove
software but could not find it. i know this is Alpha but it would be
great to see Orca installed by default for the Beta. If you could give
me any help or direction on how to fix this I would appreciate it.
Also I would love to do any accessibility testing for Fedora so please
let me know if there is anything I can do. Thanks for all your hard
work.

Reminder: today is GNOME 3 Test Day #2
by Adam Williamson
Hi, everyone! Just a quick reminder that today is the second Test Day
for GNOME 3:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2011-03-10_GNOME3_Beta . Please
do come along and help with testing if you can. We're having trouble
with the 32-bit live image, but a 64-bit image is available now and all
the test instructions are in place. We'll be in #fedora-test-day on IRC
all day long to help out with testing, so come along and join us there.
Thanks a lot!

Second GNOME 3 Test Day coming up this Thursday
by Adam Williamson
Hi, all - just a quick reminder that the second GNOME 3 Test Day is
coming up this Thursday, 2011-03-10. The first Test Day was a great
success and there's no reason this one shouldn't be, too. :) Big thanks
to Vitezslav Humpa and Radek Lat who have done most of the preparation
for this one.
The Wiki page is
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2011-03-10_GNOME3_Beta and the
IRC channel will be #fedora-test-day on Freenode, again. Please do take
a look at the new stuff on the Wiki compared to last event and let me,
Vitezslav and/or Radek (vhumpa and rlat at redhat, respectively) know if
there are any problems with it. We're expecting not to need custom live
images this time and just use nightlies instead, so desktop team, please
make sure all the packages we need to have in for testing are pushed to
f15 'stable' by then; let us know if you need any help getting an update
upkarma'ed.
Again, it'll really help to have the word spread about the event, so if
you have a blog or a line to a favorite news site or anything, please
help out with that. I'll put up a blog post about the event shortly
which you can link to if you like. Aside from that, if you can come
along to the IRC channel during the day and help with testing and
assisting other testers, of course that will be a great help!

Orphaning some GNOME packages
by Christoph Wickert
(CC'ing desktop list, perhaps somebody is interested in these packages)
I am orphaning all my GNOME panel applets because I don't use GNOME any
longer and I doubt that panel applets will have a future after GNOME 3.0
is released.
* gnome-netstatus: Doesn't build with latest gnome-panel and has 3
open abrt bugs (#606827, #630167, #642911)
* gnome-applet-cpufire: Doesn't build with latest gnome-panel, no
open bugs, co-maintained by edwintb
* gnome-applet-remmina: Replaced by a trayicon in F15 and rawhide,
so maintenance is only needed for F13 and F14. No bugs ever.
* gnome-applet-timer: Still maintained, still builds and works,
co-maintained by tomspur. One abrt bug that was forwarded to the
developer (#669519)
Please pick them up in packagedb if you are interested. If there are no
new owners within two weeks, I will retire the packages.
Kind regards,
Christoph

Alt + F2
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi
$subject seems particularly weak in GNOME Shell at the moment. Any
plans to enhance it before Fedora 15 release? Something along the lines
of GNOME Do/ Kupfer would be nice.

Do we care about the GNOME 3 fallback mode?
by Christoph Wickert
Hi there,
I see there is a lot of change going on for gnome-shell but I hardly see
any improvements in the fallback mode. I expected the fallback to be the
classic desktop I know from GNOME 2.x, but compared to what we had in
F14 it is only a small piece and that is broken. Bugs filed against
these components don't seem to get any attention.
Do we care about the fallback mode? I think we should because it will be
the default for a lot of users. So is it worth filing bugs or to set up
a tracker bug or are you not going to have time to look after it anyway?
Regards,
Christoph

pcsc-lite
by Jóhann B. Guðmundsson
Had noticed that pcscd failed to start after a default test installation..
Digging into it further revealed
# pcscd -f
00000000 hotplug_libhal.c:584:HPRegisterForHotplugEvents() Couldn't
obtain list of devices
00000037 pcscdaemon.c:601:main() HPRegisterForHotplugEvents failed
so it turnes out it needs hal which we don't install by default and hal
is hal not being deprecated?
Does anyone have any information on what the future has pcsc-lite and
should it not be removed from Gnome installs?
