Fedora 21 Alpha validation test work

Hi, folks. So, we're scheduled for Alpha TC1 tomorrow. We had a nice happy co-operative plan where QA and the WGs would collaborate on revising the release validation test process for Fedora.next... ...which, well, didn't really happen. As of this morning we were nowhere near having a viable validation process. So I went for plan B: I spent today more or less pulling the entire thing out of my ass. It's a bit rough around the edges, but I think we more or less have something workable now. I have skipped the draft stage for a lot of documents just in the interest of having something vaguely workable in time for TC1; of course, the pages can be revised as much as necessary as we work with them. It's a bit hard to remember everything I've done, but we now have a draft Alpha Release Criteria page which should cover all release-blocking media, which for now I'm assuming includes the Workstation live media, Server minimal and offline install media, Cloud and ARM disk images, and possibly some kind of generic network install image. Various other process documentation pages may need to be updated, we'll have to check through all of them. But I think now we at least have the broad strokes of what's needed for .next validation testing. All feedback on the above changes is of course welcome! Please do cast your eye over and point out anything I missed, anything that looks silly, any possible improvements and so on. Remember, though, this is really *test process* design: we're not actually doing product design here, if you think there are issues with the Fedora.next changes themselves, that goes to the WGs or FESCo. As far as this work is concerned, we're just trying to test the new Products as they're designed (all of the above is based off of the Product PRDs and tech specs). NTP switch in gnome-control-center is broken

Hi, Let's decide what to do about https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1136905 Long story short: timedated no longer supports NTP clients other than timesyncd (the new systemd NTP client). Oversimplifying, the chrony developers say that chrony is better than timesyncd, and the systemd developers say that timesyncd is better than chrony. We need to remove chrony from the default install and figure out what to do for users upgrading to F21 (if we do not uninstall chrony, the switch will be broken), or patch out the change to timedated, or build systemd without timedated and provide our own implementation of it, or patch gnome-control-center. None of these seem like particularly good options. Removing chrony seems like an easy solution, but I'm not sure how we could handle upgrades without hurting users who don't want chrony to be removed. Michael

Reporting validation results with relval: please update python-mwclient to 0.7

Hi, folks. Sorry for the cross-post, but wanted to try reach everyone I'd mentioned my little 'relval' tool to. If you have been using 'relval' to report validation results, or are thinking of trying it, please make sure you update python-mwclient to 0.7. Josef Skladanka submitted a few results using relval yesterday which messed up the Desktop page, and kindly fixed up the page and let me know about the problem (thanks, Josef!) On investigation I found the problem is that python-mwclient 0.6.5 is missing the ability to read in the text of a single page section (it looks like it has it, but it actually doesn't). Any time you submit a result to a multi-section page with python-mwclient 0.6.5, this will happen. With python-mwclient 0.7 it works fine. I'm going to send out a python-wikitcms update which requires python-mwclient 0.7 ASAP, and get the python-mwclient 0.7 update into stable for all releases also ASAP, but just in case anyone isn't updating regularly or anything, I thought I'd send a note. Fedora 21 Beta RC4 live images available for early testing

New Workstation WG liaison

Hi All, With Beta approaching and the new Fedora Council changes I've been doing some self-reflection. I was selected as the Engineering representative for the Council and I think that's going to require a bit more time investment on my part in things other than Workstation. With that in mind, I've been thinking about finding a new WG liaison. I've spoken with most of the Workstation WG and we seem to be in agreement that Paul Frields would make an excellent liaison. He's very familiar with Workstation and Fedora process. Paul has agreed to take on this role pending approval from FESCo. As a reminder, the liaison does not have to be a member of FESCo. They need to be approved by the WG and FESCo, and be able to work with both. I don't think this will be a problem for Paul at all. I will bring this up with FESCo shortly, but I wanted to allow time for comments before we go ahead with this. If you have questions or comments, please share. josh

Proposal: install dnf-plugins-core by default

Hi, I tested the latest compose of F21 Workstation and found out that dnf-plugins-core was not included in the default installation. IMHO it's something we should fix. The package includes plugins that allow users to easily work with Copr repositories and the planned Playground repository. It should be part of the default user experience because it's one of the nice details and integration with our services. Copr has proven to be useful for both us (to give early adopters software they can test, e.g. GNOME 3.12 in F20) and users (to easily get new software which is not included in the official repositories yet) and we should make working with it as easy as possible. For those who don't know it: with this plugin you can easily add/remove Copr repositores just by "dnf enable/disable name/project" instead of inconvenient copying/deleting repo files. I know that DNF is not yet the default package manager, but many users already use it instead of yum just for these kind of things, so let's give them the full experience of DNF. An impact on the image size is minimal. The total size of dnf-plugins-core including all its dependencies is 151 kB. Jiri

Fedora 21 Beta RC2 status is **FAILED**, RC3 will be coming

Wanted to keep everyone in the loop so people don't feel like their time has been wasted. We discovered at the blocker review meeting today that there's a problem with the RC2 compose. Blocker and FE packages that were pushed stable yesterday - https://fedorahosted.org/rel-eng/ticket/5988#comment:17 - were taken out of the 'bleed' repository where blocker/FE fixes are pulled into composes before they go stable, but they did not actually get mashed/distributed in time to be included in the RC2 compose. The upshot is that RC2 has incorrect (old) versions of initscripts, systemd and fedup-dracut. This means that RC2 will be subject to at least https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1114786 , https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1099299 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1146580 , so it definitely cannot be released as the Beta. We will need an RC3 compose, and testing of RC2 will not be sufficient to clear RC3 for release due to the significance of systemd. Testing of RC2 is not entirely useless - it's still useful to check there are no regressions in anaconda 21.48-13, for instance - but we will need to do a good degree of testing on RC3 when it lands later today before we can consider clearing RC3 for release. I'm very sorry to folks who've already put work into testing RC2 for the mistake. proposal for new "FOSCo" group to mirror FESCo

I posted individual messages to a number of other mailing lists, but this one I'm just cross-posting to the three lists for the product working groups. We've floated a proposal to have a new "Fedora Outreach Steering Committee", which would replace FAmSCo — so no net new governance groups added, following Mitr's ban on such things :). The idea is to help coordinate marketing, support, and evangelism like we do the engineering side of things. freedesktop specs

Hi Would it be feasible to require that any default applications in workstation follow the appropriate freedesktop specifications including xdg base dir in https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Workstation/Guidelines/Applications_and_Laun… I have been filing a number of RFE's and some of the components including IcedTea (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=947647) got fixed recently but mandating it could help adoption more. Branding concerns about workstation

Hi folks, Christian and I talked about some of the points brought up in this thread this morning and we agreed that a good way forward would be to come up with: (1) A written policy on how we brand Fedora, and also (2) A documented process that can be followed when there's a request to change that policy. I'm going to go back through this thread (and some of the other related ones that have popped up over time, this seems to come up cyclically lately) and talk to some of the stakeholders involved (including Matthew from the Fedora POV, one of the RHEL product managers from the RHEL POV since our branding ability affects RHEL, Jakub who is one of the GNOME shell designers) to list out all of the goals / needs we have and various possibilities to address them that won't compromise the design but also achieve the goals we have (if that's possible :) Let's be optimistic and assume it is.) I am going to reach out to some of our Red Hat corporate branding folks too since a lot of them have deep experience on this sort of problem space not just from RH's perspective but from their work at other companies and see if I can't find someone to advise us from that sort of third-person / objective POV as well - maybe they might have some good insight or solution we haven't considered. I have a few other things to tie up today but I will have a rough draft at a problem statement written up this week and will start some other documentation too (e.g. going through the thread and pulling out potential suggested solutions, etc.) I will keep this list posted and keep things open so anybody can have the opportunity to suggest ideas / provide feedback / etc. ~m

It'd be great if folks could help out with the Beta RC1 testing. The cloud images seem to be busted but everything else is available for testing, and Dennis will look into the Cloud issues tomorrow. In the meantime if people can help get the ARM and Workstation/KDE tests run it'd be a big help. You can use my silly relval tool - https://www.happyassassin.net/wikitcms/ - as an alternative to editing the wiki pages to report results, if you like. Set up the repo, install relval, and run 'relval report-results --username=(fasname)'. Do we have any preferences as to what model laptop we might want to feature? If we did this, would we have to blur out / debrand the system? Does anyone have thoughts on this kind of thing? systemd-networkd and network management plans

Hi For a long time, NetworkManager handled only wifi and simpler connection needs and although it now has support for bridging, bonding etc, it seems not integrated with GNOME very much. Meanwhile, systemd-networkd handles a lot more of that but doesn't handle wifi (yet?) and I am not sure what the plans are between NM and systemd-networkd to avoid code duplication. Do we still ship the older network scripts in Fedora workstation? What are the plans to integrate systemd-networkd if any? What is the future of NM? Rahul

Decision on Fedora Product branding: Fedora $PRODUCT 21 vs Fedora 21 $PRODUCT

Hello folks, I raised a question with the Board a couple weeks ago[1] as to how we should be branding the different releases. It's been clear that different groups have different opinions on whether we should call something Fedora Server 21 vs. Fedora 21 Server (and Workstation and Cloud, of course). I was asked by the Board to get input from each of the working groups as well as marketing and branding folks. I'm sending this to each of these lists, but PLEASE keep all replies on the devel(a)lists.fedoraproject.org list or it will be impossible to keep track of the replies. (I've set the reply-to header on this email; please try not to lose it). A few specific comments that have been made on the Board ticket (to avoid rehashing them). * "Fedora Server 21" sounds like we've had 21 releases of Fedora Server and we certainly haven't. * Should we start all of the Products at version 1 and say "built on the Fedora 21 platform"? Anyway, we need to have a consistent branding decision made for the release (and for the Ambassadors). So please come prepared to find a consensus (not to win a fight). As grateful as we can be for being "granted" the ability to put the fedora logo in the details screen, this is the physical product equivalent of having the logo on the front of the user manual. The workstation product has an additional hurdle to overcome because of the nature of upstreams. Any downstream looks essentially the same as us. Without some better, more visible reinforcement of the brand there is no differentiation between Fedora workstation and any other distribution using GNOME. If we rely on the visual style of the shell alone as our branding element, then to people that know what the shell actually is you are running GNOME, not Fedora Workstation. To people that don't know what the shell is, you are running something called "activities". All other desktop OSes that have strong brands have identifying features on their desktops to reinforce their brand: Ubuntu, Windows, OS X, Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Workstation feedback on generic-release-workstation request?

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1154154 is a request to provide a generic-release-workstation (sub)package in order to allow for convenient remixing of a debranded Fedora Workstation. It seemed odd that firewalld-config-workstation would require system-release-workstation and if this were to be done we'd need to be sure not to break Fedora composes. I was hoping to hear some comments from the workstation group in the ticket.

Hi all, With my design team hat on, I have been working on finalizing the branding and logos for each of the products, and thought that because we are the only product that is using the login screen, that to reinforce that to the user that it is fedora workstation that is being used, the plain "Fedora" logo on the GDM screen should be replaced with the Fedora Workstation branding. here is a mockup of how this possibly would look with the greyscale version of the fedora workstation logo: https://ryanlerch.fedorapeople.org/workstation-gdm-mockup.jpg thoughts? ideas? cheers, ryanlerch

[Accessibility] Can one modify line spacing in gnome-terminal

Hello, I've just had someone ask whether it was possible to increase the line spacing in gnome-terminal. This particular gentleman has +3 corrective eye lenses in both eyes for astigmatism and he says he finds it difficult to use text intensive applications such as irssi in the terminal. He says he's already tried increasing the font sizes etc., and is using a font that has a large height difference between letters like "a.c.e" and "b,d,g,h" for the time being. Is there a setting for line spacing? I wonder if this is worth adding to accessibility? "Package sets" release criterion: what to do with it?

Hi, folks. I'm checking the release criteria again for Fedora.next compatibility, and there's an Alpha criterion with obvious issues: "Package sets When doing a graphical install using the dedicated installer images, the installer must be able to install each of the release blocking desktops, as well as the minimal package set. " This was obviously written to the world where we had generic installer images - the DVD, and intentionally-generic netinsts. We do not have those things any more. Do we want to dump this criterion entirely, or is there any of it we would like to keep? For instance, would we consider it 'release blocking' functionality for you to be able to do some/any of the above from the Server and/or Workstation network install images *after configuring the repos manually*? Particularly, the minimal installation? I'm not sure F21 as currently conceived would offer an avenue for doing an interactive minimal installation. Basically, it comes down to: do we want to have a blessed method for doing a network install of KDE and/or minimal? If so, do we want to block releases on it? Changing default applications

Hi, Just wondering if there is still a simple way to change default applications in Fedora in the interface. In the past (a long time ago IIRC), it was possible to do this via the nautilus "open with..." dialog, but it seems that this isn't possible anymore. I do know it is possible to change the major default applications (Web Browser, Mail Client, Image Viewer, etc) in the details screen in the control center, but i am after the ability to, say, set Inkscape as my default SVG application rather than EOG. I also know that it is possible to change the mimetype manually in /home/rlerch/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list , but just wondering if there is still a way for users to change this without having to edit config files. If this doesnt exist anymore, would this be suitable functionality to propose for the Tweak Tool? cheers, ryanlerch

Beta / Final release criteria for Workstation

Hi, folks. I wanted to ask if you envisage a need for release criteria for Workstation at Beta (or Final) over and above those that already exist for 'desktop' stuff. Areas I notice: SSSD is listed in the tech spec. We have server-side requirements for FreeIPA in the Server product; do we want to formulate client-side requirements? We don't really have criteria relating to a11y or complex input methods; this isn't Workstation-y in particular, but something that might be interesting? Appearance is something we'd want to enforce if it were actually done, but I get the impression the Qt variant of Adwaita isn't actually written yet. Functional requirements for the 'core apps' - we have requirements for graphical updating (but not package install), web browser, and terminal in the current criteria, but not for text editor, file manager, Boxes, or 'developer assistant'. Do remember that anything we write in the release criteria is something we expect to enforce: if you don't actually want the release to be delayed if it's not done, best not to have a criterion for it. Goals for Fedora Workstation upgrades

The discussion about F20 to F21 upgrades has been largely focused on the technolaogy - what will happen if we make package X depend on package Y and obsolete package Z. I understand the motivation behind wanting upgrades to be encoded in the package set and to keep special casing to a minimum. But I think we can't just shrug and consider that the end - we need to know what we are trying to achieve to figure out when we need to special case and do ugly things to get there. Before going too far into the practicalities of what we can achieve for Fedora 21, I decided try to write down what we'd want for F21 => F22 and beyond. I mean this to be Workstation specific - not apply to other products or non-productized installations of Fedora. * The end result of an upgrade to F<n> must have all the packages that would have been installed for a fresh install of F<n> * In general, packages that were originally installed by default on the system, but no longer installed by default in F<n> should be removed. This may not always be practical, but after the upgrade: - There must be no duplication of applications in system roles. For example, there must not be two character map applications - There should be no left over system services started at boot If a default application is removed without any replacement in the new default set (e.g. we stop installing an office suite), leaving the old application is acceptable. * Normal user configuration of the pre-upgraded system via (non-tweak-tool) desktop configuration must not leave the system in a broken state after the upgrade. * After the upgrade, the user should see the new defaults for things like backgrounds unless they have explicitly configured non-default settings. * We test the following upgrades: fresh install F<n-1> => f<n> fresh install F<n-2> => f<n> serial upgrade fresh install F<n0> => F<n0+1> => ... f<n> (n0 to be determined - f20 or f21 most likely)

Workstation WG membership

IIRC the WG was going to meet today and might be having a vote on new members. I think both people under consideration, Allan and Rex, are qualified and would be effective contributors. However, I'd like to see Rex be part of the official WG effort, and here's why. I'm strongly supportive of the effort to make a polished GNOME-based workstation. At the same time, I'd like for this effort not to be perceived either as a monoculture, or disinterested in input from the community at large. Having the WG entirely made up of Red Hat associates makes that difficult. We have numerous participants from the GNOME upstream and Red Hat desktop team involved in Workstation. That's not just helpful but important, and I believe the effort is clearly on the right path. Rex has a long history of positive, constructive collaboration with people across Fedora. I'm confident he'd make substantial contributions in the group. At the same time, I don't think making Rex part of the group needs to limit input from contributors such as Allan, who clearly has critical input to offer for design and cohesion in the Workstation. I'm also confident other WG members can reflect that input effectively. It would also be useful to have close, regular input on opportunities for freedesktop.org and other unifying systems that we can consider while increasing workstation polish. I believe Rex's experience in KDE would be helpful in that regard, and needn't change or dilute the focus on a vastly improved Fedora Workstation. Again, none of this is intended to reflect anyone's relative value as a Fedora contributor. My only intention is to ensure we stay welcoming and responsive to a diverse participant base, while not diluting our goal of a polished, coherent, GNOME-based offering. -- Paul W. Help with parcellite icon in the message tray

Hi, I use parcellite with Gnome, and it has an icon in the bottom right corner in the message tray. There's something wrong happening here - when I hover my mouse over the "Disks" notification, for example, the icon is highlighted if my mouse is anywhere over it. However, with parcellite, the icon is only highlighted if my mouse is at a particular area over the icon - not over the entire icon region. The dropbox icon has a similar issue too. The topic was discussed on several mailing lists and we've only registered strong demand for DVDs of Fedora Workstation. There have been some suggestions to add Fedora Server to FW as a virtual machine, but no one has volunteered to execute this idea and we really need to move the matter forward. So the plan is to produce Fedora Workstation DVDs, 64bit only because we don't know of 32-bit computers which could run FW reasonably. We may also consider some less power hungry option for the regions of APAC and LATAM (probably Xfce Spin). But it only will be an alternative, Fedora Workstation DVD is what we want to distribute globally. The quantities and whether the alternative DVD will be produced is at the discretion of the regions because the production is paid from their budgets and they're the closest to users, so they should know the best what they need. Other kinds of media might be also considered and used in the end, but it doesn't stop the DVD production because DVDs will remain our primary media for this release. The plan is of course a subject of change. I just felt it was necessary to push it forward and propose a concrete solution because there is not much time left. Jiri
