*#topic totem-video-thumbnailer not removed on upgrade to Fedora 44 *(follow-up) #link https://forge.fedoraproject.org/workstation/tickets/issues/513
The team discussed the previously unresolved issue regarding the automatic thumbnailer for Totem. Tomáš Popela noted that there is no meaningful way to remove the thumbnailer, and Michael Catanzaro explained that RPM package management constraints make this difficult. Tomáš Popela questioned why DNF does not automatically suggest uninstalling the package when dependencies are unused, but the team concluded they lacked a solution. The group agreed to block work on this task and close the issue, as they determined they cannot effectively remove the component .
*#topic Add "Power Off" option to initial welcome screen *#link https://forge.fedoraproject.org/workstation/tickets/issues/514 Power Options in Initial Setup: There was a discussion regarding a request to add a power-off option to the GNOME Initial Setup screen for OEM installation use cases, allowing administrators to power off a machine before handing it over. Michael and Matthias suggested that powering off after the Anaconda installation completes is a more natural way to handle this. Tomáš observed that the current shell chrome in initial setup mode removes the power-off option, leaving only suspend. The group remained skeptical about adding a power-off button directly to the welcome screen, as it may appear unusual, though Matthias suggested it could potentially be enabled in the shell without altering the initial setup user interface. OEM Installation and Future of GNOME Initial Setup: The participants discussed how to approach OEM installation modes and the long-term future of the GNOME Initial Setup application. Tomáš questioned whether this should be addressed upstream so that all deployments could benefit, rather than creating a distro-specific solution. Michael noted that while there is talk of upstream replacing GNOME Initial Setup with a new application, they were uncertain if such an app would support necessary features like live user mode. Matthias added that they believe there are contributors capable of working on the new application if it is required. Matthias committed to taking an action item to investigate the current upstream story regarding GNOME Initial Setup, and the group agreed that Allan and Michael should collaborate to align on the first boot experience.
Live User Mode Prioritization: The conversation turned to the requirements for live user mode, which Michael identified as important for Fedora and live USB usage, despite it possibly not being a priority for upstream GNOME. Allan emphasized the importance of aligning with upstream developers, such as Adrian, to avoid working in isolation. The participants reached a consensus that any efforts to replace the setup application must include design considerations for live session usage.
*#Other announcements*
LAS Conference Report: Matthias provided an update on the LAS Conference, describing it as a well-attended event with an engaged audience. He highlighted a presentation from the KDE team concerning their crash collection system, which utilizes Sentry on the server side. Matthias stated they would investigate the details of the KDE system to see if there is potential interest from the GNOME infrastructure team to explore a similar crash collection solution for upstream GNOME.
