Drawing glitches in virtual machine and Firefox in f35

	Hi,
since I upgraded to Fedora 35 I immediately noticed drawing glitches in
a virtual machine (virt-manager) and since an update to Firefox 94.0
also there (for example when opening menus), thus I guess it has
something to do with the graphics drivers or something like that. I run
X.org under MATE and I had never any such issue before the upgrade to
f35 (I do run many virtual machines for various testing reasons, thus
I'd surely notice). I tried to record the screen, but the created video
does not exhibit the problem.

The graphics stack is kinda foggy for me, I know basically nothing
about it. I do not know where to start the investigation and what to
look for.

Any suggestion, please?

Do you think it may be kernel related? i.e. had you already updated to
kernel 5.14 series before upgrading to Fedora 35? If it's not
correlated to kernel version, then it seems more likely the
compositor. But I don't know anything about how to narrow down the
problem in the compositor - but found this:

Hmm so that perhaps suggests an issue after compositing?

You could try a 5.15 series kernel, which is not yet released to
stable repo in Fedora but is available in koji, so it's signed.

Running 5.16-rc2 should be safe but sometimes have a pile of new
issues still to get worked out, so it'd just be a data point to see
whether the problem happens there. Still another option if you aren't
certain whether it's kernel related is to go *backward* to 5.13
series:

This is the most recent 5.13, and even though it's f34 it can be
installed on f35 no problem.

I think, and only think, it's graphics acceleration related. I do not
recall, but I think I did not update to the 5.14 series of the kernel
before the upgrade to Fedora 35.

I currently use 5.14.16-301.fc35.x86_64.

I'll give it a try, to see whether it'll help. I'll report back when I
know more.

I noticed I have installed an ancient kernel-5.11.17-300.fc34.x86_64,
thus I booted it, but it did not help.

I updated the https://people.gnome.org/~mcrha/glitches.mp4 , it shows
how Firefox draws its menu when moving mouse above the items.

I realized I've disabled compositing manager in MATE (gsettings get
org.mate.Marco.general compositing-manager). When I enable it the
things get much better, the Firefox stops misbehaving in the menu.

I do not know why it had been disabled, the machine is updated from
Fedora to Fedora, for years. The compositing-manager has some side
effects I'm not used to (the way things are drawn in the desktop
environment), but I guess I can live with it.

One last question: is the hardware acceleration meant to work also
without the compositing-manager? I do not know whether GNOME Shell has
a way to disable it and whether it would work similarly odd there as
well, though maybe it would worth a try.

If the bug is happening inside a VM, the easiest thing to try is
changing the graphics adapter emulated by the VM. In virt-manager go to
the machine details and one of the entries will be "Video VGA" or
"Video QXL" or "Video VirtIO". Those are the three candidates;
whichever it is on currently, try the other two, and see if it gets
better. VirtIO seems to be the least buggy overall at present for me.
You can also flip the "Display" option (display server) between "VNC"
and "Spice"; spice *ought* to be better in almost all circumstances.

I tried that before, and while some adapters work better and some
worse, they all exhibit the problem.

It seems to me it has something to do with the graphics acceleration,
which, I think, Firefox has enabled in the 94.0 release.

Other parts of the desktop are perfectly fine. Only the virtmanager's
virtual machine and Firefox sometimes mis-draw.

I recorded a (very shaky) video just opening and closing the Activities,
where can be seen what I see - the weird blueish rectangles. It's
sometimes more visible, sometimes less. It's uploaded here:

This is a problem for me too in KDE with Firefox (it uses xwayland).
