I brought this up on the desktop list a few months ago, when the
plugin that was shipped with Fedora stopped working. I got the
_impression_ that the recommended way to install GNOME Shell
extensions is via gnome-software.

In any case, the "chrome plugin" works with Firefox despite its name.

Considering its function, I also find it disconcerting that it sits in
copr, instead of the official repositories.

It should probably be installed by default, alongside Firefox.

Well, Firefox should not be installed by default, but as long as it is, 
so should chrome-gnome-shell.

It should be a Supplements, since you only want it if you have both 
Firefox *and* gnome-shell. Something like:

I think I'll disagree here. We've moved the extension installation to
gnome-software, and I don't think we want to offer multiple ways to do
it.

Would it be possible to change the GNOME web page to direct people to
the right place? I'm definitely in favor of prefering Software to a
browser-based thing.

Not really. We still want the website for uploading extensions and
(code+user) reviews. It's probably a good idea to update the website to do
something different for recent-enough GNOME versions - maybe a "Check out
in Software" button based on a custom shell-extension: URI scheme - but
removing the installation functionality all together would leave users of
older OS in the cold.

As we covered in a discussion a while back, gnome-software allows you to
only install extensions packaged as rpms. It doesn't show extensions
available on the website but unavailable as rpms. I just checked with F26
Beta Workstation Live.

That means the shell-extensions plugin isn't working for some reason, so
you only see extensions provided by the packagekit plugin.  The plugin is
built and installed in Fedora, so it's not immediately clear what's wrong.

I don't think the shell extension site is returning results for a
pre-release gnome-shell version. If you click the refresh button in
the updates panel of gnome-software, do *any* shell extensions from
the extension site show up?
