Lots of X programs (xemacs, xlogo, xfig) complain of missing fonts (and end
up using some cheesy default font). I reported this originally against
xemacs (at 478999), and now changed it to xorg-x11 as I believe this is a
better match. xfontsel has only 4 fonts to exhibit now in all. This is
probably due to the ongoing font handling overhaul in rawhide.
In any case, could somebody knowledgeable on this point me (OK, make that
"handhold me") in the direction to fix this?

I opened a similar bug:

It was fixed by adding xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-1-75dpi and
xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-1-100dpi to the "Requires:" list of the package
(in my case DDD).
I don't know the history on it, but I suspect that one or the other of
these two packages was once a part of the core Xorg packages and was
later broken out. Individual packages relying on these fonts were not
updated to be aware of the change.

Not really, this is older and due to removal of all the legacy font
packages from the default install set. Apps that still need them need to
grow the associated deps.

No, the fonts themselves are still there, the applications don't see
them anymore, tough. This has happened during some update after F10 GA.

Assuming you already verified that fonts are actually installed
please run the following test for me:
1. Log in
2. Open gnome-terminal
3. run xemacs and verify that it fails like you described
4. su, "service xfs restart"
5. run xemacs again
If it still fails on step 5, it's not bug 430416. If it starts working,
then the problem is that we fixed it in libraries somewhere (with
X server remaining broken), and perhaps your apps use old libraries.
Please let me know how it goes.

(No, I did not do anything here except religiously updating X and axing

There is no xorg-x11-xfs installed here (and that used to work fine). On
another machine (a bit carelessly handled, sorry) what I have is
xorg-x11-xfs-1.0.5-3.fc10.x86_64, installed in July (legacy
leftover?). There I get:

I see it myself now too. If I have the following in xorg.conf:

Then the following is seen in Xorg.0.log:

.... so far so good, but then:
[dix] Could not init font path element /usr/share/X11/fonts/75dpi, removing from list!

Of course the fontdir is set up correctly with mkfontdir.
It happens on:
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.5.99.3-8.fc11.x86_64
So, looks like the X server is bust pretty badly. Time to file a bug.
I don't use legacy X applications, so the problem does not bother me.

I think this is because the xserver now defaults to using builtin fonts.

This is nice since most people don't care about server-side fonts.
However, I think it means that you don't get to use them at all. So, I
think to fix this, you either need to build the server with
--disable-builtin-fonts or apply this patch:

which gets you both builtin and loadable fonts. FWIW, the xserver in
master does this now more cleanly:

Pete, xfs is not manadatory anymore and it is not installed per
default since somewhere in F9. All configuration files for
individual font packages should go to /etc/X11/fontpath.d. If you
eliminate "Files" section, stop xfs, restart Xorg, and something
doesn't work, THEN file a bug about it. Or if you have xfs
running and set up like above (I don't think you should have the
first line in xorg.conf, it should go to /etc/X11/fs/config
instead) then it should work as wel, of course -- we don't ban
xfs, just don't use it per default anymore.

This is completely beside the point. The problem occures in the
part of the log that you skipped and I'm going to re-insert:

(or was broken, for the documented version).

Not that I care about it, since I don't use legacy applications,
