Translations
by Giacomo Magnini
Hi all,
I'm new to the list, and I wish to work on translating Fedora packages
in my own language (Italian).
Is someone already working on this? Should I look anywhere else to
gather more informations?
Is someone already coordinating the effort?
Sorry for the slew of questions! :)
Cheers, Giacomo Magnini.
PS. I'm already working on the Mozilla translation team, if this is of
any use...

Re: Mime types, icons and .desktop files
by Gérard Milmeister
Yes, of course the developers should include the information, but especially
commercial providers don't do this. I want my distribution to provide .desktop
files and icons for most common commercial applications. I created the desktop
files myself and I would like to submit them somewhere. Mime-types for Mathematica
notebooks should also be included in gnome-vfs.* or whatever.

[RFC] Better font filetype and metadata file detection for xfs initscript
by Mike A. Harris
The attached diff attempts to do the following improvements
to the xfs initscript for performance and correctness:
The individual fixes are:
- Consider all .ttf, .ttc, .otf, .otc file extensions of any
combination of upper and/or lowercase in a font directory to be
a truetype or opentype font which ttmkfdir should handle.
Previously, only .ttf and .ttc fonts were handled. This is a
correctness fix.
- When determining wether or not mkfontdir and ttmkfdir need to
be called, ignore any fonts.cache files that might be present,
as they're metadata files, not fonts. This is both a
correctness and performance fix, as any non-font metadata files
found that aren't explicitly ignored, but are newer than
fonts.dir will unnecessarily trigger regeneration of fonts.dir
- When determining wether a directory contains non-truetype
fonts, ignore all ttf/ttc/otf/otc font types, not just ttf.
- If any fonts.dir files were recreated, it now calls fc-cache
afterward if fc-cache exists, in order to update all fontconfig
fonts.cache-* files
I've studied the regular expressions carefully and think that
they cleanly implement the above, however there could be a glitch
in there, so I'd like to get other people to review this change
before officially committing it to the next build of XFree86, as
a bad regex could result in rather serious font subsystem
breakage, so the more eyes who review this the better.
If you review the change and think it to be correct, please
respond with an "ACK" email to fedora-devel-list, along with
any comments and/or suggestions for futher improvements.
On a separate note from the above, there is one possible flaw
that was in the original initscript as well as my above proposal,
however I want this issue treated/considered separately from the
above, so please comment on each issue separately. The following
line:
if [ "$(ls |grep -iv '\(fonts\.\(scale\|alias\|cache.*\)$\|.+\(\.[ot]t[cf]\|dir\)$\)')" != "" ]; then
In both the original initscript, and this updated one, the test
doesn't take into account wether or not the directory may contain
subdirectories for whatever reason. If the dir does contain
subdirs, the subdir name will pass the grep test, and cause
mkfontdir to be executed even if no font files are updated.
I'm thinking of changing this ls|grep test to be something
similar to the following, which explicitly tests for files only
and ignores dirs:
if [ "$(find . -type f -maxdepth=0 -not -regex '.*fonts\.\(scale\|alias\|cache.*\)$' -and -not -iregex '.+\(\.[ot]t[cf]\|dir\)$' != "" ]; then
It's ugly, but I believe it may do what we're looking for nicely.
Comments appreciated.

Mime types, icons and .desktop files
by Gérard Milmeister
The mime-info database misses a lot of mime types.
Also most third-party applications don't come
with .desktop files and their corresponding
icons (For example I use Mathematica and Maple
and had to create .desktop files and mime-types
myself).
I propose therefore that there be an entry
form on Fedora home page where people can
submit this information.
There could also be a program like appfinder,
that looks if there are applications installed
that it knows about and then installs the
corresponding .desktop files into
/usr/share/applications

With pleasure ;-).
A few points I'd like to discuss and/or noticed (after comparing the
gimp2 and gimp-beta packages):
- whether it should be called gimp2 or gimp-beta -- gimp2 makes sense if
the final package also will be called gimp2, gimp-beta could be easily
obsoleted in any later final package ("gimp-beta <= 2.0")
- whether or not to explicitly list directories - I guess this makes
sense for /etc/gimp, but e.g. /usr/share/locale/zh_CN/LC_MESSAGES or
/usr/include don't belong in gimp packages
- whether or not gimptool-1.3 belongs into the -devel package
- I moved the devel docs from /usr/share/gtk-doc to
/usr/share/doc/gimp-beta-devel-.../
- the gimp2 package requires libaa, libexif, the gimp-beta package has a
few more explicit requirements (which min versions of glib2, gtk2,
pango, ...)
- I think the desktop file should reflect that this is still a beta
version, even though it's close it's not yet "GIMP 2"
Comments?

Re: RPM problem: prereq: <file> not honored in upgrade ordering?
by Jef Spaleta
Pekka Savola wrote:

Its relevant...to the bug summary you posted to bugzilla..which speaks
about a 'reordering issue' where you didn't specify that you orginally
saw the reordering issue with using autoupdate. Your bugzilla reports is
quite misleading about the circumstances where you saw the 'reordering'
issue...and makes it hard to actually try to verify...since you do not
make mention of autoupdate in the bugzilla entry....full disclosure is
important. You initial bugreport comment about a 'reordering' problem is
misleading since you didn't specify the exact commandline you used when
doing the 300 RPMs install...i'd hate for a developer to waste time
trying to confirm a general 'reordering' problem wider in scope than a
specific packaging problem with sendmail when 'reordering' bug was
actually because autoupdate used --nodeps. This could easily a problem
specific to the sendmail package...a packaging error with sendmail, and
not a general problem with rpm itself. Have you checked to see if the
other programs that use the alternatives system installs correctly..like
the printing subsystems? If other alternatives based systems get
installed correctly...maybe its not a general rpm bug at all..and your
bugreport is misfiled under rpm. Wouldn't you hate to waste the rpm
developers time hunting down a general 'reordering' bug that doesn't
actually exist...because you failed to tell them you were using
autoupdate to do the large 300+ package install.
Now...that we are all pretty much convinced that a 'reordering' bug
would be specific to autoupdate and not rpm...we can handle the specific
'core problem' of why the postinstall scriptlet is not running
alternatives like you expect.
Have you tried running the alternatives command that is in the
postinstall scriptlet by hand?
/usr/sbin/alternatives --install /usr/sbin/sendmail mta /usr/sbin/sendmail.sendmail 90 --slave /usr/bin/mailq mta-mailq /usr/bin/mailq.sendmail --slave /usr/bin/newaliases mta-newaliases /usr/bin/newaliases.sendmail --slave /usr/bin/rmail mta-rmail /usr/bin/rmail.sendmail --slave /usr/share/man/man1/mailq.1.gz mta-mailqman /usr/share/man/man1/mailq.sendmail.1.gz --slave /usr/share/man/man1/newaliases.1.gz mta-newaliasesman /usr/share/man/man1/newaliases.sendmail.1.gz --slave /usr/share/man/man5/aliases.5.gz mta-aliasesman /usr/share/man/man5/aliases.sendmail.5.gz --initscript sendmail
thats one very long commandline...it could be a simple syntax error in
the command or something and nothing to do with the order rpm is trying
to install things (if used without --nodeps). Can you get that
alternatives --install .....
command to work right after the rpms are installed?
