Re: Submitting packages
by Gérard Milmeister
Michael,
Thanks for clearifying.
It may probably a good idea to put a little more information on this on
the Fedora home page, so that potential contributors know what to
expect.
As for the QA process, it is clear that this should be strict. However I
wouldn't agree with arguments like "Do we really need that?" or "Why
three Prolog implementations, one should be enough". For the Fedora Core
this policy is the right one, but the future extras should include any
packages that might be of interest. This does not mean, however, that
any shell script, that someone has written, should be packaged.
Yes, most packages WILL have a special target group, but programming
languages like Haskell and SML are not special purpose. I wish for
Fedora to become a dominant distribution in the educational and research
area.
>From the original Fedora FAQ:
"Fedora will forever put an end to incompatibilities due to repository
mixing by eventually including all possible software."
While this is an ideal probably impossible to achieve, I think it is a
worthwhile goal, and the merger with the Redhat project, raised my hope
that it could be actually achieved.
Anyway, I will from time to time submit packages to Fedora, and look
forward to the moment, where I install a fresh copy of Fedora and simply
use up2date to install one of the packages, I myself contributed.
(I hope the extras repository is included by default on a fresh install,
not as something that users may find out to use from hearsay, otherwise
it would not be much different from freshrpms and others)
A further point: with a large repository, I think becomes necessary to
extend the official application groups for rpm. Where should I but a
computer algebra package, when there is not group called
Application/Mathematics, for example. Maybe a naming convention more
than 2 deep would also help.
I look forward to a bright future :-)

up2date and yum: failover mode?
by Axel Thimm
Something invaluable in yum is its failover system, e.g. pointing N
mirrors of the same repo in the config giving yum a chance to pick
another one, when a failure is detected.
Is that feature already in up2date, or will it be brought to it?

Time plan for merger
by Roozbeh Pournader
Is there (even a general idea of) a time plan for the merger with
"fedora.us"? Specifically, will it happen before Cambridge++ or after?

Fedora Core 1 freeze warning
by Elliot Lee
In preparation for the release of Fedora Core 1, we will be freezing the
tree on this schedule:
October 24 anaconda (installer)
October 27 kernel
October 28 everything
Make sure your bug reports & changes are in BEFORE those dates. The things
to focus on are bugs that _must_ be fixed for this release - reports of
'should fix' bugs are welcome but definitely won't get fixed.
After the freeze, only stop-ship bugs will get attention/fixes.
Like all software, this release will not be perfect, but it will be
better. Thanks for your help in making it that way!

Great! Where did these PPC RPMs come from and how long have they been
around? I've been following this PowerPC support thread; did I miss
something?

Some of us actually remember when Red Hat had a sparc product :-(.
Perhaps it is time for Aurora to merge back into the fold? It seems
that Fedora would be a perfect means to do this...

yum/apt/up2date + distributed dependencies
by Dan Morrill
Since up2date now supports multiple repositories, this opens a question
in my mind: what happens when you have distributed dependencies?
Here's a specific (though partially contrived) example:
- Install xmms-42.0 from Fedora Core
- Install xmms-mp3-42.0 from freshrpms because you live in a jurisdiction
where you are legally able to do so
What happens when Fedora Core releases xmms-42.1?
FC doesn't include xmms-mp3, but xmms-mp3 depends on xmms. Hence, the
upgrade of xmms will fail so as not to break xmms-mp3.
Beyond that, suppose that freshrpms does release xmms-mp3-42.1. In this
case, up2date COULD resolve the dependency and complete the upgrade -- but
to do so it would have to resolve dependencies across two different
repositories. Is it able to do so? (This XMMS example is the first one that
came to my mind, but it is easy to imagine more sinister dependency trees.)
Before I go exploring this in depth, I figured I'd ask the list. This
issue seems like it could become more relevant later, as Fedora Extras
repositories begin to proliferate.
Any comments appreciated; apologies if this has been covered before.

Window resize synchronization
by gtg990h@mail.gatech.edu
I recently tried Fedora Test 3 with the GNOME 2.4 desktop, and I was very
surprised to find out how smoothly GNOME and GTK apps resized. In every other
distribution I have used, even the simplest GTK app would very visibly lag
behind its window frame. In Fedora, even complex apps like Gnumeric and Nautilus
resize without any lag at all.
My question is: Does Fedora include any special patches to accomplish this? I
know that some experimental code was written for metacity and GTK+ that used the
X11 SYNC extension to synchronize frame and window repaints. However, I don't
know if this patch was ever integrated into GTK+ because it doesn't appear to be
in the CVS logs.
My main reason for asking this is because the effect only seems to work with the
XFree86 'nv' driver, and dissapears when using the 'nvidia' binary driver.
According to all my benchmarks, the 'nvidia' driver is much faster in 2D, and
also provides every extension the 'nv' driver does. The 'nvidia' driver also
performs very well in KDE and GTK 1.x apps. I was just wondering if your version
of GTK+ did anything special to hit some sort of bad behavior in those drivers.
Thanks for your time,
Rayiner H.
