Fedora Core 2 wishlists
by Michael K. Johnson
http://fedora.redhat.com/participate/schedule/
No dates set yet, but a driving goal or defining characteristic will
be the 2.6 Linux kernel -- unless the 2.6 Linux kernel takes too
long to arrive. That is, we'll shorten the schedule to accomodate an
earlier release of the 2.6 kernel, but not lengthen it to accomodate
a later release of the 2.6 kernel.
2.6 is looking good. There's a lot of integration work to do, though.
However, that won't be the ONLY feature of Fedora Core 2. I'd like to
hear people's wishlists. Not everything will be possible, but it would
be nice to have a good list from which to pick the possibilities, and
from which to also pick ideas later for Fedora Core 3.
FWIW, one thing that we're not likely to do is just push the schedule
out by a week for project foo, another week for project bar, etc. ad
nauseum.

Excessive package interdependency
by Paul Rensing
My current "pet peeve" about Fedora right now is the excessive amount of
unnecessary package interdependency. As specific examples:
redhat-artwork (0.88-1) requires:
/usr/lib/qt-3.1
nautilus requires:
gnome-vfs2-extras
nautilus-cd-burner
To me, all of these are unneeded packages (for my installation, I mean).
I maintain lots of small (old) boxes for specialized purposes and the
few packages on them, the better (less maintenance, quick upgrades, less
cruft).
On these boxes, I don't run any Qt apps, yet I am forced to install qt
to satisfy the dependency.
Most of my boxes don't have CD burners, yet the nautilus dependency
pulls in nautilus-cd-burner, cdrecord, and mkisofs.
Many of these boxes have no need for SMB, yet nautilus pulls in
gnome-vfs2-extras.
I would like to see packagers (and developers) pay more attention to
these interconnections. Packages should only "require" what is really
needed to run; everything else should be optional.
Thanks for the good work.

problems with dev rpm
by Karl DeBisschop
The dev RPM in the development tree (dev-3.3.9-2.i386.rpm) seems to very
reliably crash my test machine. Is anyone else seeing this sort of
behavior?
It's a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop, which uses a P2 mobile 450 CPU.
kernel-2.6.0-0.1.14.i686.rpm is installed, everything else from the
development tree seems to be up-to-date and working fine for me. But any
attempt to install dev presents me with a long trace, and a totally hung
machine.
I guess I'll bugzilla it now, then if I can get some free time tonight
try and make it generate a core before it locks up dead. But at the
moment I haven't a clue what might be the root cause, so it seemed worth
asking if anyone else has similar issues.

2.6 kernel patches
by Stan Bubrouski
Hey,
Before I go ahead and reinstall on new HD, I was wondering what patches
are applied to the 2.6 test kernels in rawhide compared to stock
kernel?
Right now I'm using a hybrid test9 (I know it be old) kernel from
Arjan's RPMs with some customizations (working like a charm).

Self Introduction: Rui Miguel Seabra
by Rui Miguel Silva Seabra
First, I apologize for not having read
http://www.fedora.us/wiki/SelfIntroduction
before.
Full legal name:
Rui Miguel Silva Seabra
Country, City:
Portugal, Lisboa
Profession or Student status:
I'm employed as a systems administrator in the major
Portuguese financing institution, handling mostly with
Free Software operating systems.
I'm also an university student and trying to finish my
degree in Computer Sciences.
Company or School:
SIBS, SA -- http://www.sibs.pt
Universidade do Minho -- http://www.uminho.pt
Your goals in the Fedora Project:
To help wherever I can. I specifically can't do much QA
since I pretty much need my system to work, and testing
unreliable main packages is a little too risky for me.
I'd like to include my pet project in Fedora, but that'll
have to wait for Savannah to get back up.
Historical qualifications:
What other projects have you worked on in the past?
AbiWord
I have been working for quite some time with the AbiWord
project, specifically maintaining it's rpm spec and
Portuguese localization. In its context, I have contributed
to related projects like libwpd, enchant, aiksaurus, etc.
My pet project is irmctl, that is a daemon that gets input
from a device (currently my irman IR) and executes commands.
I use it as a way to make my computer a remote controlled
multimedia station (TV, CD and XMMS plying, etc...).
What computer languages and other skills do you know?
PERL, C, HTML, CSS are the languages (or pseudo-) that I'm
most familiar with. I'm also a qualified system
administrator with experience in many servers and
infrastructures. One of the main focuses I have to have on
duty is a special care with security.
Why should we trust you? <--- too blunt?
Short answer: you shouldn't trust strangers.
Long answer:
I know it's hard to trust a stranger you know
nothing about, but I think that I am someone you can
trust not to cause intentional harm to others.
You might trust some people who signed my public key
to the point o trusting me too.
