How do you install applications?
by Dave Borchard
I am new to Linux.
I installed and upgraded Fedora Linux with an FTP installation.
I then downloaded Real Audio and installed the application with the line:
rpm -i rp8.linux20.libc6.i386.cs2.rpm
I then looked for a Real Audio program icon or listing on the menu system. I could not find the application anywhere. I tried running the installation line again, I got the message that the application was already installed.
I am used to installing programs under Windows, where a desktop icon is created and the program is listed in the menu as part of the automated installation process.
There must be additional steps necessary to install an applications under Linux that I am missing. I tried searching for an answer, but I haven't found an answer yet.
What steps are necessary to finish the application install and make Real Audio function when clicking on a Real Audio filename with a web browser?
Thank you!
Dave

/sys mount (for 2.6)
by Pete Zaitcev
Bill,
do you have initscripts which mount /sys automatically? If yes, please
send me an RPM version. So far all I tried didn't to it. This is what
I have in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit currently:

I must be missing something?
BTW, I need /sys in order to bring up ctc with "echo 1 > /sys/..../online".
Everything else works just fine without /sys.

My SRPMS for Fedora Extras
by Gérard Milmeister
I have the regret to announce that I had to relocate my SRPMS to another
server, which has unfortunately very low performance. I would be happy for
any better proposal.

2004-01-28 Fedora Core 2 test1 status
by Elliot Lee
Here's the latest:
. Unfortunately, there are some filesystem corruption problems related to
the way SELinux file contexts are stored, and it will take a while to hunt
these down, so selinux will have to be disabled for test1. If you are
running rawhide, PLEASE make sure to boot with 'selinux=0'.
. We're going to have to slip test1 because it's Just Not Ready. Things
are not ready for a final test1 tree yet. This slip will be a minimum of a
couple of days. Not sure what that will mean for the availability date -
at this point, think "Wednesday".
. These are the remaining issues that I know of
Gnome 2.5 builds need to be finished (alexl et al)
gdm in particular needs updating or rebuilding to
fix the borked libcroco dep.
firstboot doesn't work (#114508)
USB keyboard/mouse don't work on some systems (kernel - DaveJ?)
/mnt/sysimage gets remounted readonly during initscripts installation
There's some sort of patch for this one already in the works
CD installs don't work
Please file bugs for other showstopper issues, or send in patches for the
ones above.
Sorry there's no better news,

Upgrading Production line PCs
by Chadley Wilson
Very a jolly big Hello to all of you,
I have potentially good news,
My bosses and I have decide to give Xplease a huge finger.
We are going to upgrade all of our bench PCs (28 of them) to 2 gig
celerons for the production line.
We want to load .... YES! FC2 or 1 if 2 isnt ready by then,
We have one problem I have been working on but no-one seems to know how
to fix,
Our in house app needs client connectivity to the ms-sql database.
mmmm!
Toughest thing for me yet.
All I can say is I really hope it will work.
Have a smashing crashing and bug squishing weekend
see ya all on monday.
Cheers
Chadley

Possible FC2 inclusions from fedora.us
by Warren Togami
I was asked to prepare a small list of packages to possibly move from
fedora.us into Fedora Core 2. I propose the following packages for
discussion of merits. If they are not chosen for FC2, they will be in
FC2 Extras at fedora.redhat.com as will the rest of fedora.us packages.
> ddrescue
dd-like tool but doesn't die on I/O errors
useful if the tool is already installed when you need to attempt
data recovery?
Tiny!
> bonnie++
excellent burn-in stability test for disk/filesystem
This tool has saved me lots of potential headache and downtime by
testing and crashing failing hardware or bad kernels before putting
servers into production.
Tiny!
> iptstate
There is some disagreements to include it in Core or not. Everyone
agrees that it is a really nice tool though.

> pyzor
> python-based anti-spam system, automatically augments
> spamassassin scoring power
Does anyone object to pyzor? It is an incredibly simple way of making
spamassassin score more accurately. The python source appears fairly
clean and compact, complete with unit tests. There have not been any
pyzor releases since September 2002 and watching the mailing list, I
have not seen anything that looks like a confirmed pyzor bug in all this
time.
One possible blocker might be that it was not tested on python-2.3 yet.
> perl-Digest-Nilsimsa
> Needed for perl-Razor-Agent
> perl-Razor-Agent
perl-based anti-spam system, easily augments spamassassin scoring
power. Far more effective in scoring than pyzor, but a bit more
complicated due to the larger amount of code and dependency.
> perl-RPM-Specfile
generates mostly proper SRPMS out of any perl CPAN module
> scribus
> scribus-i18n-en
Popular desktop publishing software
Target for 1.1.5 coordinating with upstream developers if this is
accepted into Core. Otherwise it can go into Extras anytime.
