Yes I do have a radeon 7500 and I don't need the i810 driver. I have
done more investigating and found if I boot in init 3 and startx I have
direct rendering. If I boot directly into init 5 I have no direct
rendering. The radeon driver is loaded in both cases. Should I put in
bugzilla?

FC2 kernel quality
by Enrico Scholz
Hello,
I am a little bit concerned about the quality of the FC2 errata-kernels. They
have several bugs which make them nearly unusable:
* cdrecording is completely broken:
- 'cdrecord' refuses to work as non-root which breaks nearly every GUI
- there is a severe memory-leak in the kernel when burning audio-CDs
* there is a bug when opening new PTYs; a symptom is EIO when accessing
/dev/ptmx. This bug breaks application like screen or ssh.
* SELinux can not load the policies anymore because the tools can not
handle SELinux versions above 17 but the kernel has 18
The first two issues are well known for more than 1 month and are
critical (cd-burning is a common action, and who can live without
ssh?). The SELinux thing should be solved also because SELinux was
titled as a killer-feature of FC2.
Can we expect a fixed version in the near feature, or shall we go back
to the vanilla kernel and fix the bugs manually?
Another issue might be the kernel packaging which is very inefficient.
There is no reason to include the kernel-sources/headers in the base
'kernel' package, because:
* it wastes 20-30MB of diskspace and 6000 inodes on the root-filesystem
* there is no way to prevent this e.g. with %_netsharedpath
* it makes cross-compiling of kernel-modules impossible (e.g. you can
not build i686 modules on an i586 because you can not install the i686
kernel)
* it is incomplete: the kernel-headers alone are useless so at least a
'Requires: cpp' would be needed in the kernel package. But minimal
systems need the kernel only but not cpp.
A possible solution would be the creation of a separate subpackage with
the kernel-headers. These are to be installed either directly at
/lib/modules/.../build, or (preferred) under /usr/src, /usr/share/... or
... and make /lib/modules/.../build a symlink to this place.

xorg crashes
by Carlos Rodrigues
Hi!
Today (it didn't happen before that), for 2 consecutive times, I went
away from my machine and when I came back it was it the gdm login
screen. I'm trying to figure out what happened but in Xorg.0.log.old all
I see is the very uninformative "Signal 11" message. I have no
.xsession-errors on my home directory either... Where does the output
that X programs dump in the console end up?
Is anyone else seeing this? The only stuff that changed since yesterday
on my machine were the updates I installed:

Well as of 2.6.8-1.590 i810 is still a module.

trying to play AA and wolfenstein and notices that it was slow. Found
out the the radeon dri driver was loaded but not the i810 driver. This

Console user mount patch and FC3
by John (J5) Palmieri
This is in reference to RH bug#133941. It is suggested I take this
discussion to fedora-devel. What is keeping this patch out of FC3? I
know it is late in the game but there was a large discussion the past
week about sane options for allowing mounting of removable devices out
of the box. Part of the solution that was agreed upon was this patch.
Without this patch we will need to revert back to not allowing the user
to mount removable devices by default and only allow them the ability to
turn on this option after install. I have looked at the patch and it is
simple and does matching the same way we do it in dbus. Getting this
patch in not only means it makes it easier for users to mount their
media but it also means sane restrictions that would not be there if the
user was to turn on user mounting of removable devices without the
patch.
So my question is what needs to happen to get this in? The merits of
the patch have already been discussed and been brought to a consensus.
I can say the implementation looks good to me. Do we need more eyes on
it? What else?

DVD image of FC3 test2 for x86_64 too big?
by Matthias Saou
Hi,
I just tried burning the x86_64 DVD ISO image of FC3 test2, since I wanted
to try an upgrade then an install on my x86_64 computer, but unfortunately
I got this :
Blocks total: 2298496 Blocks current: 2298496 Blocks remaining: -88930
It doesn't fit on regular 4.7GB DVD-Rs :-( The i386 DVD ISO is smaller and
probably fits (I hope so, as I downloaded it too!), but the x86_64 one
definitely doesn't... is this a known problem? I hope people will be more
careful before pushing such huge images in the future...

openoffice rpm bug
by Sipos Ferenc
Hi!
There is a bug in the fedora packaged version of openoffice, in writer
if I try to paste a html page with image, writer freezes, I'm using the
latest rawhide packages, but this error exists in earlier version. Note,
that in common openoffice packages, this error doesn't exist, so
something wrong with the gnome extension of openoffice or some patch
makes it wrong.
