RE: Kernel 2.6.10 Can't Open Initial Console on FC3
by Joseph D. Wagner
RESOLVED.
I enabled support for hotplug devices and installed an initrd; then it works.
They tell me there's a way to make it work without initrd, but it's ugly, messy, and not recommended:
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/udev/
I haven't yet tested to see if it works with initrd and without support for hotplug devices, but from the documentation I've read my money is on no.

- admit complicity
- remove tab indentation
- some more code consolidation

"vanilla" kernel closest to Fedora kernel
by Florin Andrei
I normally try and use the distribution-provided kernel for pretty much
everything, because it's simpler this way. But sometimes it's just not
possible. E.g., for some DVB cards, one needs a vanilla kernel, patched.
So here's my question: what is the best way to configure a vanilla
kernel so that it is as close to the Fedora kernel as possible?
I was thinking to just get the .config file used to generate the Fedora
kernel and use it to configure/make the vanilla kernel and let the
kernel build system deal with the differences.
Is that a good approach? I don't need a perfect match (indeed, it is not
possible), but just a reasonable closeness.

Tarball Location For Upstream Redhat
by Jeff Pitman
Just curious on this: In most cases, a spec can be defined such that a
proper URL can be put in place of "Source:" such that a build system
could download the tarball from the upstream source. However, there are
a number of source packages in the distribution where Redhat is the
upstream provider for that software. Is there currently a location
where the source tarball can be downloaded? Or does the source RPM
constitute the official release? Maybe this is something a build
system should handle: SRPM URLs in the Source: tag.

Problems with kernel compilation
by Kaustubh Ghosh
I was trying to install a custom kernel in RH7.2. I downloaded kernel
3.4.27 from kernel.org , compiled it made 'make bzImage' , then made the
appropriate changes to GRUB to boot it (just added a new line to
grub.onf , with '/usr/src/linux2.4.27/boot/bzImage' in place of default
vmlinuz. It booted OK.Then I added an integer array to stuct inode and
struct ext2_inode(my fs is ext2) , again compiled it and tried to boot
it.(The compilations were done in the default kernel and certainly not
the new one). But now the kernel just does not boot.(compilation was
OK).On selecting the new kernel from grub ,the system just reboots. Is
this behaviour very expected? How can I remedy the situation?PLease
help.Thanks in advance.

process to changing default of CONFIG_SERIAL_8250_NR_UARTS=4 to 24
by Jerry Geis
What then is the process to request that a change be made in the default configuration
to have CONFIG_SERIAL_NR_UARTS=24 and not the present default of 4.
THanks,
jerry
-----------------------
I would suggest a configuration issue, not a bug. The kernel config
for 2.6.9 - 681 shows:
CONFIG_SERIAL_8250=y
..
CONFIG_SERIAL_8250_NR_UARTS=4
CONFIG_SERIAL_8250_EXTENDED=y
..
CONFIG_SERIAL-8250_MULTIPORT=y
The default configuration between Red Hat 9 and Fedora Core 3 at the
kernel level has changed. Your configuration is a bit different than
what is normally used in other words.

Major problems ripping CD's
by Casper Pedersen
Hi,
I'm sure if this is caused by me, or it's a bug, or something else.
I upgraded my hardware last week, and suddenly I'm no longer able to rip
cd's with Grip, dekagen, etc.
The new HW is Asus P4R800-VM (ATI 9100 chipset), a P4 3GhZ, and 2 GB Ram.
If I try with Grip or Sound Juicer the sustem locks up immidialty, if I
use dekagen I can rip 1 CD, and then if I try with another one
cdparanoia lock's up the system after 'verifying CDDA command set...'
I'm running FC3 with all updates installed.
Any idea?
Thanks.
Regards/Casper
