mach 0.4.8 released
by Thomas Vander Stichele
Hi everyone,
mach 0.4.8 - "More Than One" was just released.
Mach should now correctly handle multiple users in the mach group
doing sequential builds. It also has a hack for libselinux, to make,
among other things, FC3-on-FC4 work.
WHAT IS IT
----------
mach allows you to set up clean roots from scratch for any distribution or
distribution variation supported.
This clean build root can be used to run jailed services, create disk images,
or build clean packages.
WHERE TO GET IT

Summary of FC5test1 vulnerabilities
by Mark Cox
With the release of FC5test1 we've done an audit of possible (known,
public) vulnerabilities from 20030101 to date that are in packages part
of FC5test1. The aim is to minimise the number of flaws unfixed by FC5
gold. Summary:
Total possible vulnerabilities 20030101 to date: 1170
FC5test1 not vulnerable:
due to upstream version of package shipped: 1079 (92%)
due to backported security patch: 77 (7%)
FC5test1 vulnerable: 14 (1%)
Bugs have been filed for the vulnerabilities still present in FC5test1
packages, and we'll continue to track up to release and beyond flaws
affecting FC5. The living document with all the details is at:
http://cvs.fedora.redhat.com/viewcvs/*checkout*/fedora-security/audit/fc5...
The method behind the audit can be found in the details of our
original FC4 audit: http://people.redhat.com/mjc/20050505-fc4
Questions or corrections to secalert(a)redhat.com
Thanks, Mark

xorg-x11-xdm-1:0.99.3-6
-----------------------
* Thu Nov 24 2005 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 1:0.99.3-6
- Updated xdm.pamd to work with recent pam changes, and bumped the minimum
pam requirement up to 0.78-0 for FC5 builds. (#170661)
- Added "Requires(pre): xorg-x11-filesystem >= 0.99.2-3", as the xdm package
puts files into /usr/lib/X11, so we have to make sure it is not a symlink.
- Removed "filesystem" package dependency, as xorg-x11-filesystem carries
that dependency now, so it can be updated in one spot.
- Added missing "BuildRequires: pkgconfig".
- Added xdm-0.99.3-xdm-app-defaults-in-datadir.patch to force app-defaults
files to install into _datadir instead of _libdir.
- Added xdm-0.99.3-xdm-scripts-in-configdir.patch to put the xdm scripts in
_sysconfdir, and removed older xdm-0.99.3-xdm-configdir.patch which hacked
up Makefile.in. Fixes a typo that caused Xreset to not get installed
properly also.

opinions on /etc/security/limits.conf
by Russell Coker
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=173902
Currently if you run "su - user" (or several other commands that use pam) then
the limits for many fields are inherited from the user executing the command.
The main problem I have with this is that it gives inconsistent results,
particularly in the case of daemons. I have designed a change to the program
"runuser" to make it use pam_limits.so so that the limits.conf file will be
applied to daemons. But to take advantage of this we need sane values.
Currently even with my proposed modification to runuser daemons will still
run inconsistently, a daemon may perform differently dependant on whether it
was started at system boot or by the action of an administrator.
Also some daemons (such as Oracle) are started by "su" which has the same
issues.
If a daemon is going to fail then it should fail in every situation so the
administrator can be aware of the problem and fix it. Alternately if it
works in one situation then it should work in others.
To deal with this I believe that the default limits.conf file should have
entries for every field for every user. This is a little controversial so
I'd appreciate feedback on the above bugzilla. We have two issues to
resolve, whether to have such a default and what the default should be. In
my bug report I have suggested some values taken from default values for
rawhide and RHEL4.

Gnome 2.13?
by Bojan Smojver
I noticed that metacity was updated to 2.13.2 in the last batch of
packages this morning. Is this the sign that we're heading to Gnome
2.13.x (and therefore 2.14) in FC5 or was this package just a lonely
accident?

Missing files in xorg-x11-server-utils and xorg-x11-utils
by Bojan Smojver
As of the latest Rawhide updates, xterm is having problems finding
colours, because the file /usr/lib/X11/rgb.txt isn't there any more and
the two RPMS from the subject line report missing files.
Also, the xorg-x11-filesystem comes with
/usr/bin/xorg-x11-filesystem-upgrade script with looks pretty broken at
first glance. It contains things like:
for dir in /usr/include/X11 /usr/lib/X11; do
if [ -d "" ]; then <---- OOPS!
mkdir -p -- ""
fi
done
Maybe some \$ escaping for $dir didn't go quite right?
Related problems? Dunno...

'option routers ... Routers should be listed in order of preference'
and
'option static-routes ... are listed in descending order of priority' .
No preference / priority could be set with previous dhclient-script .
Now, dhclient-script provides:
Default Gateway (option 'routers') metrics:
Instead of allowing only one default gateway, if more than one router
is specified in the routers option, routers following the first router
will have a 'metric' of their position in the list (1,...N>1).
Option static-routes metrics:
If a target appears in the list more than once, routes for duplicate
targets will have successively greater metrics, starting at 1.

------------------------------
* Tue Nov 22 2005 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 1:0.99.1-1
- Changed package version to 0.99.1 to match the upstream font-util tarball
version, and added "Epoch: 1" to the package for upgrades.
- Added font-util-0.99.1-mapdir-use-datadir-fix.patch to fix the font-util
mapfiles data to install into datadir instead of libdir (#173943)
- Added "Requires(pre): libfontenc >= 0.99.2-2" to force a version of
libfontenc to be installed that fixes bug #173453, and to also force it
to be installed before xorg-x11-font-utils in a multi-package rpm
transaction, which will ensure that when font packages get installed
during upgrades via anaconda or yum, that the right libfontenc is being
used by mkfontscale/mkfontdir.
- Added ">= 0.99.2-2" to BuildRequires for libfontenc, as a convenience to
people rebuilding xorg-x11-font-utils, as they'll need to install the new
libfontenc now anyway before they can install the font-utils package.

* Mon Nov 14 2005 Jeremy Katz <katzj(a)redhat.com> 0.99.3-5
- Do not provide xinit anymore, gdm has been fixed and that breaks things
with the obsoletes
* Sat Nov 12 2005 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 0.99.3-4
- Added Xsession script from xinitrc, as it is very similar codebase, which
shares "xinitrc-common" anyway, and all of the display managers use it.
