First-time mock user
by Jerry James
I'm trying to use mock for the first time in order to do a package
review. I've hit a few snags that I thought I should point out on
this list. Let me know what I can do to help resolve them.
First, the SHOULD item on this page:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/ReviewGuidelines
that refers to mock should probably link to this page:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackageMaintainers/MockTricks
I have edit rights on the wiki, so if nobody objects I can make that
change. As it was, I had to hunt for information on how to use mock.
So I read the MockTricks page and the mock man page. MockTricks tells
me to use '-r <config>' to select a config file. The mock man page
says that if you don't select one, you get whatever
/etc/mock/default.cfg links to. That's great, except that there is no
such link as /etc/mock/default.cfg after installing mock. Should
there be? If not, the text on the MockTricks page should perhaps be
expanded a bit to note this and explain why not.
Next I created the "build" user as described on the MockTricks page.
Then I did "su - build", just like it says to do. It wants a
password. The null password doesn't work. My password doesn't work.
Fortunately, I am root on my box, so I can "su -" and then "su -
build", but what is supposed to work here?
I also noted that MockTricks says to do "mock rebuild <SRPM>", but the
mock man page says that usage is deprecated. It's supposed to be
"mock --rebuild <SRPM>" now.
So I kicked off the mock build ... and setroubleshoot pops up to tell
me about AVC denials. These are NOT the SELinux problems described on
the MockTricks page. I got the following:
1) /usr/sbin/groupadd (groupadd_t) cannot "write" to /dev/null (var_lib_t).
2) /usr/sbin/groupadd (groupadd_t) cannot "ioctl" to /dev/null (var_lib_t).
3) /usr/sbin/useradd (useradd_t) cannot "ioctl" to /dev/null (var_lib_t).
4) /usr/sbin/useradd (useradd_t) cannot "read write" to (var_log_t).
5) /usr/sbin/useradd (useradd_t) cannot "write" to /dev/null (var_lib_t).
I just updated to selinux-policy-3.0.8-58.fc8 shortly before
installing and running mock. Are these failures expected? If so,
MockTricks should warn me about them. If not, against what do I file
a bug?
So the mock build failed. I expected that, since I was pretty sure I
had identified a missing BuildRequires. I went to the log files to
verify that my guess was right, and found that build.log is empty.
OK, so I'll try root.log. No sign of a missing BuildRequires there;
but I do see some scary looking stuff:

Sure enough, the root directory has 0750 permissions and is owned by
root:root, so my build:mock user cannot read it. Likewise with the
other directories on that list. How is this supposed to work?
I hope we can work together to make this less confusing and
frustrating for the next mock newbie. Regards,

[ANNOUNCE] Aurora SPARC Linux Build 2.99 (Beta 2 for 3.0)
by Tom Callaway
The Aurora SPARC Linux project is proud to finally drag Build 2.99
kicking and screaming into the light.
Took us long enough, huh? Beta 1 was in April. Barring some sort of miracle,
Aurora 3.0 will be the last sparc32 supporting release. So, if you're still
clinging to your sparc32 systems, please test this beta out. After 3.0,
we're not even going to think about sparc32 (unless well bribed).
This is a BETA release, for what will become 3.0. In fact, we're going to
give this release a short period of time to uncover any really nasty bugs,
and then we're going to call it 3.0.
Here are some of the key features in this release:
- Fedora Core 6 based tree of packages (some things are newer)
- Support for Niagara hardware (Sun T1000, T2000)
- gcc-4.1.1
- gnome 2.16
- KDE 3.5.5
- kernel 2.6.23.1 (with patches!)
- Full support for LVM at installtime (no more crashes!)
Like all BETAs, this one has some bugs. Here are the ones we know about:
- Installs on sparc32 hardware usually work, but they're very touchy.
If you're installing to a sparc32 system, use text mode. If it fails to find
the cdrom, try: linux expert text
- Smartd seems to make systems using the esp.ko SCSI driver very very
unhappy. If your system is esp based, we highly recommend that you
disable the smartd service in single-user before fully booting after
install.
- cpuspeed seems to hardlock some sparc64 systems (the V120 is an
example). Again, if your system locks up at cpuspeed, we suggest that
you disable the cpuspeed service in single-user mode.
- Parted was doing incorrect things in previous Aurora releases. This is
the source of the odd cylinder-head error messages that have popped up
in the past. Sometimes these error messages are harmless, sometimes they
are not. Either way, you can get rid of them by booting to rescue mode,
then, at the shell prompt, run:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/$DRIVE bs=1M count=1
Where $DRIVE is your harddrive, likely sda or hda.
Then, reinstall. The errors will vanish (for good!). Be aware that
running this command will wipe out all the data and partitions on that
disk.
- E10000 systems are not yet supported. :/
- Most IDE based SPARC systems need to boot with ide=nodma.
Specifically, Ultra 5/10 and Sun Blade 100s need this for sure.
- Systems that boot off qlogic attached disks are not supported, because
there is no working firmware loader in anaconda, and the qlogic driver
needs firmware.
- The graphical installer on some sparc32 systems doesn't enable the mouse.
Post installation, the mouse works fine in X.
- We haven't spun the security updates into this yet. We'll do this before
3.0 final.
- Upgrades from 2.98 might not work. We found more errors in how we were
handling partitions at installtime, and unfortunately, the best way to fix
them is to destroy the partition tables entirely and reinstall from scratch.
If you find other bugs, please report them at
http://bugzilla.auroralinux.org/
If you install 2.99 on a system, success or fail, we wanna know! Please
take a moment and add your system to the table on our wiki:
http://wiki.auroralinux.net/wiki/Build2.99TestMatrix
You can download the files from our primary location:
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/aurora/build-2.99
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/aurora/build-2.99
The mirror sites should pick it up in a few hours/days, depending on
whether they still remember that we exist. :)
Many thanks to the folks in #aurora on freenode for their help in
getting this release out.

Heads up: openldap rebase for Fedora/devel
by Jan Safranek
Upstream recently released new minor (2.4.x) version of OpenLDAP
package: http://www.openldap.org/software/release/announce.html
You can see there list of changes. From development point of view I did
not notice any difference, the API should be the same as in previous
version.
I'd like to update openldap in devel to the new version. Many packages
depend on openldap, so I will provide compat-openldap package, which
will provide 2.3.x libraries and no recompilation of any component would
be required.
I'd like to to ask all maintainers of components, which depend on
openldap (see appendix), to test following simple cases:
1. the component works with compat-openldap, which provides 'old' 2.3.x
libraries
2. the component is compilable with new openldap-devel-2.4.6
3. the recompiled component works with new openldap-2.4.6 (and with
2.4.6 and 2.3.39 server)
I roughly tested all these scenarios with nss_ldap without any problems,
including the recompilation.
2.4.6 release is prepared in CVS. You can find binaries (as yum
repository) at
http://people.redhat.com/jsafrane/openldap-2.4-preview/$arch.
I would like to build and release openldap-2.4.6 at the beginning of
December - does it sound realistically to test at least the first point
until then? I do not expect any problem, but I want to be sure that new
openldap does not break anything when I release it. Feel free to propose
better plan.
Thanks,
Jan

WIP VCS branch [Ad: Package Review VCS]
by Lubomir Kundrak
Hi,
Warren's brilliant idea of a separate VCS for package reviews reminds me
of how the NetBSD/pkgsrc projects does this kind of things. They keep a
repository named pkgsrc-wip, which is basically a repository open for
anyone (with an account). It is where packages that are not
complete/finished/reviewed are.
One of its uses is package review -- new packagers just add their
packages here, ask for help on a dedicated list and when they feel the
package is finished, they ask for a review. This is how they learn to
package. It also encourages cooperation during packaging.
Other use is that packagers keep packages that are not finished in some
way. This is what we don't have and might be a nice thing to have:
Let's say a package is in alpha state, without a clear idea when would
it be relased and in very unfinished state. Considering that
devel/rawhide is place for things that are expected to be stable at the
time of release, it's not a good home for such packages. Currently
packagers just keep those packages in their private repositories.
Examples are KDE4, xulrunner, GRUB 2, etc. I think it would be
definitely better to have them in Fedora hosted VCS.

Support TV on Fedora - Proposal for Fedora 9
by Otto Rey
Fedora should have a good support of TV cards. I have a LifeView FlyVideo 98 and Fedora 8 with MythTV (and others) and I can't get TV working. I try almost everything (i am developer).
For home users, Fedora 9 TV support should by something like this: "Install this crappy package and you are zapping" :D
Sorry for my english.
