Why upstream?
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi
With the recent changes on not allowing separate kernel module packages
anymore in the Fedora repository, I thought now would be a good time to
document why we insist on upstream code. I have used other references
and made the guidelines generic.

If you have any additional points or corrections, feel free to edit the
wiki directly or let me know. I intend to send it to FESCo later.

Hardware check idea
by Ryan McDonough
After proposing this in the Fedora irc room I decided to post it to everyone
on the list for feedback:
I would like to see an application that would run on windows/osx/linux that
would check hardware and see if your mobo/cpu/fans etc will work with the
newer kernels and if not what boot commands you may need and what problems
these boot commands may cause, it would check against the current top 5
distrobutions kernels, plus the current standard kernel.
It wouldn't be total hardware like gfx etc, just the core hardware like
mobo, cpu, fans as its the hardware that you can't really change (easily)
unlike a video card.
I feel this would bring great benefits as it would allow people to see if
the newer distrobutions will actually boot with no problems without having
to download 700mb live cd images and take all the time and effort to burn
the cd and then have to report that it wouldn't boot on a forum.
I have experienced a problem with a kernel update after the 2.6.20 release
that the newer distrobutions were using as I couldn't/can't boot without
noacpi acpi=off, added to my boot command which causes power management to
go bye bye along with my monitor after 15 minutes.
I'm not a great programmer as I've just started, but I would like to see if
people think this project is feasible and a good use of developers time and
help/learn as much as I could.

Yum from rawhide has forgot to pull a dependancy!
by Laurent Rineau
Currently on my machine, I have CGAL-devel installed, and it requires
boost-devel>=1.32. However, boost-devel is not installed!
lrineau@schtroumpf ~ $ rpm -q --requires CGAL-devel | grep boost
boost-devel >= 1.32
lrineau@schtroumpf ~ $ rpm -q --whatprovides boost-devel
no package provides boost-devel
zsh: exit 1 rpm -q --whatprovides boost-devel
lrineau@schtroumpf ~ $ rpm -q yum CGAL-devel
yum-3.2.5-3.fc8
CGAL-devel-3.3.1-2.fc8
What is wrong?

Hm... I see what you mean now. I like the first one better for some
reason, but I can try to make a compromise - I'll play with various
positions and decide what seems best.

Yep, I dunno whether this naming scheme is screwed up, but I see no
point in using two different schemes in one repo.

Well, yet never complained about that till now (not a justification).
Better move this part of discussion to -devel (CC-ing).
But from my point of view I see nodoka as the parent and the children
are theme for metacity, theme+engine for gtk2 and gnome metatheme (and
more will hopefully come later), so IMHO it is rather questionable in
this case. And as I used these names in upstream packages as well it
would require a change there as well, because I AFAIK fedora package
name should not differ from upstream name (save for the parent additions
in addons packages).

hpet timer patch for powertop
by Ahmed Kamal
Hi,
I just tried powertop (amazing tool), however I was shocked that around 70%
of my laptop's wake ups are from
" 67.5% (756.5) <interrupt> : extra timer interrupt"
Google told me, I am not running tickless (although, my kernel is
2.6.22.4-45_1.cubbi_suspend2.fc6) and the chipset on my toshiba A105
satellite laptop seem to be ICH6 Family. Do I need that patch that forces
enabling hpet timers?! If so, is there any (un)official fedora kernel that
includes the patch, as I don't like to manually track kernel upgrades. I
hope that patch will be integrated in mainstream fedora kernels soon.
Regards
