As long as the package manager and upstream server use HTTP, you
simply create anther InstantMirror virtual host for other distros. It
isn't distro-specific, even though the packaging may be.

Yep, and installing InstantMirror or something like it takes very
little of that extra effort.

If you think that is a better course of action, get a sample config
file included in /usr/share/doc/squid-XXXX/
I personally have no interest in that approach.
Different people in different environments will like different
solutions to the same problem.
The more locally cached packages, whatever the mechanism, the better.

Cannot access the Hardware Clock via any known method
by Steve Grubb
Hi,
I'm running an up to date rawhide machine. This message shows up everytime I
boot and my system time is always way off. Its been like this for over a
month. I figured somebody else would notice this and report it or fix it.
This is the full message:
Cannot access the Hardware Clock via any known method.
Use the --debug option to see the details of our search for an access method.
This occurs during boot. I have no idea where this is coming from. When I'm at
the command prompt, /dev/rtc exists. Any one else running x86_64 rawhide
notice this, too?

Headsup: New libopenraw version heading for rawhide.
by Trond Danielsen
Hi,
a new version of libopenraw should appear in rawhide any time soon.
The new version changes the soname of libopenrawgnome.so from 1.2.0 to
1.3.0.
Applications that depend on this library should take necessary actions
to adjust to the changes.
Regards,

To get an idea of how this relates to the _default_ Squid settings :
#Default:
# cache_dir ufs /var/spool/squid 100 16 256
That 100 in the above config line means 100 MB of storage maximum.
The "ufs" in that config line means if squid is blocked on disk I/O
it will not attempt to cache any other requests until unblocked.
There are other options, but that is the default. If you have your
squid cache on an ext3 partition ( the default ) there is quite a bit
of blocking for the kjournald. Using ext2 performs much better.
#Default:
# maximum_object_size 4096 KB
I think that line is obvious, it means a lot of RPMs won't be cached
at all.
I won't get into the specific settings for determining what gets
purged from the cache as new requests roll in. Basically, the default
settings are more likely to purge large files ( most RPMs ) in order
to allow many small files to remain cached.
So the _default_ squid settings are almost worthless for caching RPMs
either for updates or installs. That is not to say that squid could
not have a configuration optimized for caching RPMs. However, for
many people it is much easier to install InstantMirror or something
like it than learn the ins and outs of squid configuration and tweak
those settings. You will get better performance easier with an actual
local mirror.
Admins in larger organizations are more likely to spend the effort to
set up a mirror on their local network, or even twiddle with cache
settings if that is the solution best for them. Anything that can be
done to encourage less experienced or less clueful admins to set up
local mirrors is a Good Thing. At the very least it improves the
update / install experience and reduces stress on internet mirrors. I
can't think of any negatives to local mirrors off the top of my head.

Fedora Package Status of Jan 30, 2008
by Christian Iseli
Hi folks,
PackageStatus page updated. The NEW review queue seems to be improving.
And the number of open bugs seems to have gone slightly down, but it still
looks like many BZ tickets are in need of some loving care.
Someone should plan a small party when we reach the magical 10000 binary rpms
(I hope for release 10... so we have reached the fourth dimension) :)
Cheers,
Christian

Build failure due to make -j8
by Gérard Milmeister
I was trying to build a new release of genius, but the build failed due
to unsatisifed make dependencies on machines that use make -j8 or make
-j4 instead of the usual make -j2 and indeed when I tried make -j8 on
my (uni-processor) machine, it failed too. The package is automake
based. Has this behavior been observed with other packages? Could it be
a problem with make or automake, or would it be specific to the package
only?

Fedora 9 Alpha delayed just a bit longer
by Jesse Keating
Due to some production issues, we're not going to be able to stage the
Alpha for mirrors in time for a Thursday release. Therefor we will be
delaying the release until Tuesday the 5th. We are not taking in new
builds, just giving the mirrors more time to sync up.
