Buggy network connection causes very low system responsiveness

Hi, first, I am not entirely sure this the right list for this kind of issue, so I apologise in advance in case it isn't. And now for the problem: At home I am connected to home network, most of the time wireless, but when wired the issue seems to be same. The connection of the home network to outside is quite buggy and traffic drops quite often to zero or near zero values, and sometimes the connection is even lost (it's via wifi, unfortunately with low visibility to the router we connect to). What bugs me is that when the connection is in its near-dead state my Fedora is very low responsive. For example I tried to open terminal (via key shortcut) and it didn't pop up at least for ten seconds, and then instantly when I disabled my network connections. This low responsiveness happens whenever the traffic drops to zero or near zero (and a lot of packets is lost). CPU load is at normal during the 'lags'. Also already loaded applications seems to behave decently. My question is: Is this behaviour to be expected or is it a bug? I don't know exactly how these things work, but I fail to imagine how can network problems affect system responsiveness... [sorry for the dups, third try w/ fedora-devel-list subscribed] Hi Lennert, Referring to your post at http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-October/msg00045.html Thanks a lot for posting those rpms. I was able to use those with --define='cross_target ia64-linux-gnu' to build a cross-compiler that builds xen-unstable.hg including the userland tools. I posted that information today to the xen-devel mailing list, see http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-devel/2008-01/msg01105.html I had to make some changes, first to build the gcc rpm successfully on x86_64 targetting ia64, and second to include some files that were missing. The missing files were due to %ifarch tests which were looking at the build arch instead of the target arch. I came up with a solution for that... though I wouldn't be surprised if you're able to come up with something more elegant. The patch is below. kernel-libre (hopefully 100% Free) for Fedora 8 and rawhide

Hi, I've stripped non-Free firmware bits from Fedora kernels for F8 and rawhide, starting from tools developed by the gNewSense folks and now in use by BLAG developers, and built alternate kernels that I've successfully booted up and used on my x86_64 notebook. You'd be surprised at how little it takes to get to a Free Software kernel. It's just a few drivers that need firmware removed. Nevertheless, I may have tentatively removed too much, and I'd appreciate if someone would defend some of the bits I removed to be on the safe (freedom-wise) side. The first experimental kernels should be landing at http://www.lsd.ic.unicamp.br/~oliva/snapshots/kernel-libre soon. The version for Fedora 8 is based on 2.6.24.3-51 (one SCSI patch on top of the just-released 2.6.24.3-50). The version for devel is based on 2.6.25-0.139.rc6.git5 in CVS. Once I get some positive feedback and I'm happy with this arrangement, I'll figure out how to track and number kernel-libre such that the version it's based on becomes entirely obvious, and then I'll submit it for integration into Fedora proper. I realize it's a bit late for Fedora 9, but if it can be added to CVS, this will already make things much easier. And then, once it's in CVS, and considering that it doesn't add features (if anything, it removes features, unless you count the possibility of 100% freedom as a feature, like me :-), maybe it could go into Fedora 9, and maybe even Fedora 8. disk devices in F9 interchanged

I my actual F8, I have 2 disk devices: One Sata-Disk: /dev/sda, and 1 IDE-Disk: /dev/sdb. But in F9 Beta, these two disks seem to be interchanged (/dev/sda <--> /dev/sdb). Is this true, and if yes, why? How to bring up ypbind with NM in F9?

So, how are we supposed to start ypbind on F9 with NetworkManager? The ypbind init script currently runs before NM startup and so fails to run. Java packages, guidelines, ...

There are a bunch of packages blocking F-GUIDELINES on the ground of being Java packages and the Java guidelines not being finalized. Yet there are another bunch of Java packages which have been in Fedora for years. This is inconsistent and just generally doesn't make sense. If what we have now is good enough for all the existing packages, why wouldn't it be for new ones? And once the guidelines are finalized, the packages can always be fixed to conform to them.
