ext4dev oddity

I am having some pretty good success on some different machines with ext4. However, I am getting this message: EXT4-fs error (device dm-0): ext4_mb_generate_buddy: EXT4-fs: group 717: 23410 blocks in bitmap, 23411 in gd EXT4-fs error (device dm-0): ext4_mb_generate_buddy: EXT4-fs: group 721: 19309 blocks in bitmap, 19333 in gd What do I need to do to help debug this, if anything, and how do I find out which files or directories are affected? %configure assuming in-source-tree builds

When this is needed, currently the Fedora packager has to revert to calling the configure script directly, foregoing the %configure macro, and copying as much of the configure settings by hand. Would it be a desirable feature to, say, be able to declare %define configure_relative_path .. and then have %configure use the value of that instead of './' when calling the actual configure script? Features that would be great for Fedora 10

Here are just few features that I believe would be great for Fedora 10 to have: 1. RFE: Add desktop folder with examples of what "fedora thing" can do :) https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=315171 Lisa gets Fedora 10 Live CD from her Joe (her geeky boyfriend) and puts it in her laptop. After she gets presented with a different looking desktop that she is usually presented she doesn't know what this "fedora thing" actually does and can do. Joe gives her a CD version of Ubuntu, after loosing temper with trying to explain what fedora can actually do. Lisa puts Ubuntu CD in and after few minutes she clicks through a few examples on her new desktop and sees that this "Ubuntu thing" does more that that "Fedora thing" like plays music & videos, shows nice spreadsheets and other documents. It would be great for Fedora to add directory on desktop with some nice examples what Fedora and OSS can do. There are great videos on redhat magazine page and I'm sure there are other great resources - new users need to be exposed to them in this way. Also there is a initiative for contriburots to make screencasts and this feature would be a great match with it if they merged together. 2. RFE: Desktop shortcut for joining Fedora IRC (aka "Get Live Help"): https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=430217 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=179703 Fedora is about freedom+communication, right? Why not make this statement more that just a nice slogan. If you installed sabayon linux you could experienced for yourself what this really means. I as a new user to gentoo (sabayon is based on gentoo) was really blown away with this feature. It is really, really simple to implement and gives a real meaning to a communication friendly linux distro. In sabayon link to their IRC chat has a simple name "Get Live Help" and it work fabulous! I didn't have any Portage experience so I poped in IRC chat room and was on my way after I got quick help. Hi, Thorsten! I'm interested in the GSoC Package WebUI project idea. I am well acquainted with the basic principles and methods of working with repoview and pkgdb. I have a desire to make a site that provides information on all packages and has convenient tools for searching, grouping, resolving dependencies, etc... I consider that the best variant for development of the new application is the use or improvement repoview or pkgdb. I think that http://packages.ubuntu.com/ and http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages are very convenient and functional tools. Hey, There was some good discussion at FUDCon about apport and friends. I'd really like to see us have a sane story on this by F10 - currently Bugzilla has a lot of unannotated backtraces and it's a big waste of developer/triager time. So the goal is that when a program crashes, we get a full annotated backtrace to the eyes of the developer. There's some discussion on the current Fedora wiki page: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureApport Here's my executive summary: Apport: Based on kernel core dump piping, can handle any program crash. Submits data to launchpad which has tracing server which uses debuginfo to create full stack trace. Fedora would need to make custom server on top of the lowlevel tools. Breakpad: Used by Firefox and various Google applications. Based on a shared library linked into processes which catches SIGSEGV and submits a report via HTTP. Format: http://code.google.com/p/google-breakpad/wiki/ProcessorDesign One nice thing is that Mozilla has a lot of investment in a free software scalable processing server called "Socorro": http://code.google.com/p/socorro GNOME is using breakpad/socorro and has a server up: http://blogs.gnome.org/ovitters/2007/10/06/crash-gnome-org/ They were prototyping it using Fedora, and I believe bug-buddy which is linked into all GTK+ programs uses breakpad and sends to crash.gnome.org by default. Some data points from the discussion: * Apparently Apport submits an entire core dump which is (IMO) a non-starter for Fedora; there are things like passwords in memory that we just can't send by default. * Mozilla is unhappy that we're turning off their breakpad integration on Fedora, which means they don't have visibility into crashes on freedesktop.org/Linux systems. * Possibly replace breakpad library linking by using utrace+system service (right?) * Create debuginfo DAV server and pull debuginfo data dynamically (what are the download requirements? does this replace gdb's "debuginfo-install" display?) My 2¢ - Link in breakpad, create http://crash.fedoraproject.org running Socorro. Investigate either submitting reports to Mozilla as well for Firefox or create a system where our Socorro pushes reports to theirs. Longer term investigate utrace system service instead of having apps link to breakpad (this gets us non-desktop system crashes without having to universally LD_PRELOAD or whatever).

[RFC]InstantMirror Redesign

Hi all! InstantMirror currently works fine but involves a lot of configuration and that might actually stop someone from use it. I came across this project recently and found it really interesting. After reading the discussions on fedora-devel, warren's journal, InstantMirror wiki, I thought that I would come up with a redesign that would be more yum friendly and will involve minimal configuration for setup. Below is my point of view of new InstantMirror design. Note: You can access the design proposal here (http://iyum.saini.co.in/index.php/InstantMirror) also. Redesign Proposal ***************** Basically the most obvious use case of InstantMirror is to be used by Yum for updates. I propose to develop InstantMirror keeping in mind that it should integrate with Yum. In the new design I am using not multiple programs to get the job done as proposed by warren here (https://fedorahosted.org/InstantMirror/wiki/InstantMirrorDaemon) There will be only one daemon that will continuously listen to requests and if necessary it will fork itself. Below is the method of operation for the daemon. Method of Operation ******************* 1. InstantMirror gets a client request for a URL. 2. Check: if URL is not in (RPM, metadata file) * Then its none of our business. * Let proxy handle it the normal way. * Done and exit. 3. Error Check: if remote host is not reachable * Check: if RPM/metadata is available in cache 1. Stream the RPM/metadata from cache. 2. Done and exit. * else 1. Throw a "No route to host" error. 2. Done and exit. 4. Check: if RPM/metadata is available in cache * Check: if RPM/metadata in cache is older than upstream 1. Delete RPM/metadata from cache. 2. Download and stream. 3. Done and exit. * Check: if RPM/metadata matches upstream or newer than upstream 1. Stream the RPM/metadata from cache. 2. Done and exit. * Check: if RPM/metadata does not exsit upstream 1. Delete RPM/metadata from cache. 2. Throw a "Not found" error. 3. Done and exit. 5. Check: if RPM/metadata is not available in cache * Download and stream. * Done and exit. Download Process **************** In the above operation everything is clear except the download process. If a file is already being downloaded from upstream and another client request come in for the same file, then we have two options to continue downloading 1. Download via only first instance (master) and let the other instances (slaves) copy the partial content to the client. The disadvantage is that the slaves will be throttled by the master's download speed. 2. The other instance also starts downloading from upstream and append data to the local file. Stream the data to clients when download is finished. This is quite complicated and as of now I don't even know how to do it or even if its feasible to do it. I am currently trying to get the hang of downloading process. The above design is more or less same as the previous design with may be a bit of improvements. Now, we have decided to have two types of InstantMirror. 1. InstantMirror to be used by a small group of people. In this case we have to get rid of all the dependencies like squid, apache because for a small setup nobody is going to configure squid and apache. So, we use a proxy server implemented in python for this kind of setup and integrate InstantMirror with it in caching mode. So that it becomes easy to setup and don't require squid, apache or whatever else. 2. InstantMirror to be used by an organization. As almost all the organization ( i am focusing more on institutes/universities here) use a common proxy server to access the Internet, we will have the InstantMirror which can be integrated with squid. There will be no difficulty in setup as the people already use squid (assuming squid is widely used in Unix/Linux world) and know how to configure it. We can't use proxy server implemented in python here because no organization would ever agree to use a stripped down version of proxy server instead of squid. If the above sounds interesting, then I also propose to build a Yum plugin (say Yum Client) which will interact with InstantMirror sitting near the proxy server. Yum Client will periodically update the InstantMirror with the information like which packages are very frequently updated by user (kernel, kde, yum), which packages are never updated or updated rarely (vim). Using this information InstantMirror will optimize the download queue and using some very simple techniques for queuing a download etc., we can optimize the bandwidth usage. Imagine a university with thousands of Linux users and everyone is updating their system weekly. GBs of bandwidth is being wasted every week due to subsequent downloads of the same package. "10" < "9": Get rid of string comparisons in time for F-10?

On #fedora-devel, the issue of comparing Fedora versions by string comparison just came up. With F-10 on the way, this will be the first time when string comparing versions will fail in a "10" < "7" way. The case in question was a classic older %if "%{?fedora}" > "7", which should be changed to %if 0%{?fedora} > 7, as Rex Dieter and Christopher Stone have pointed out: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/DistTag#head-1c550109af0705ccb71329… Where else but in spec files may similarly wrong string comparisons be happening?
