Re: Kernel 2.6.25 (F8/F9) problem
by Michael Cutler
Yesterday I installed Fedora Core 9 on three HP DL380 G5's and noticed stability problems from the first boot. Apparently randomly one machine would boot (fairly) normally, the other would freeze during boot and the third would tail out stacktraces (CPU# frozen for 61secs?!). All three were fresh installs from the same DVD on the same hardware. Rebooting the machines was a russian roulette on which would come back up.
I upgraded from 2.6.25-14.fc9.i686 to 2.6.25.6-55.fc9.i686 and still had the same problem on all three machines. Below is a snapshot from dmesg showing the problem. I have just installed 2.6.26-0.98.rc8.git1.fc10.i686 and the problem seems to have gone away.

Re: yum docs help (seth vidal)
by Philip Ashmore
Hi there.
It would help me (and no doubt others as well) if you could add a
section on pup / yum-updatesd.
In my experience these seem to be doing do something network-related
outside of yum when determining if updates are available - all my repos
are local.
For example sometimes I get notified that "updates are available" via
pup / yum-updatesd KDE panel applet, but running "yum update" yields "no
updates available". I use rsync to synchronise my local repos to
(geographically) local internet mirrors and even these haven't changed,
leading me to suspect that the changes pup / yum-updatesd see haven't
even hit the local mirrors yet.

yum docs help
by Seth Vidal
Hi folks,
we need some help on some yum docs that I'm sure a lot of admins out
there have dealt with. I've put together a list of things that I think
would help a lot of folks who are using yum/createrepo/etc for the first
time and/or are getting involved in slightly more advanced uses.
I'd love suggestions for other common (and commonly confusing) cases
that could use more docs.
Additionally, if anyone wants to help contribute docs on any of these
subjects that'd be fantastic.
Here's the list:
http://skvidal.fedorapeople.org/yum-quickstart-doc-list
Thanks,

kernel 2.6.25 hanging at boot

Hi,
I have been having problems with kernel 2.6.25 on F8
with my Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. The boot sometimes freezes.
It just writes:
Decompressing Linux ....done.
Booting the kernel.
and then hangs forever, and I have to press the power down button.
The interesting thing is that if I suppress the quiet option in
/etc/grub.conf
to have a verbose boot, It does not hang (so it seems).
This makes me believe that this extra printing introduces a small delay
in the boot process, giving time to something initialize properly,
Does this make any sense at all? Could it be some kind of race condition?
Thanks.

[Fwd: Re: GNU Unifont update]

[FWD because Paul Hardy forrgot to subscribe]
I just finished the glyphs and posted them at
http://unifoundry.com/unifont.html on 20 June 2008. I then took a
vacation I had planned for a long time. I was trying to get something
in releasable form before my vacation, but it didn't happen.
I intend to package all the sources used to build the GNU Unifont: my
software, plus software that Roman Czyborra wrote originally, plus
software that Luis Gonzalez Miranda wrote to convert the .hex font into
a TrueType font with my modifications, in one source tree with make
files and man pages. I've been wrapping this up behind the scenes and
expect to finish this weekend.
I would like to go through the Fedora release process, starting with
just the font and then adding the whole source tree to build the font.
Qianqian Fang will be able to guide me through this process (and I've
been in frequent contact with him while adding the missing CJK glyphs),
but review by anyone else of course would be welcome.
If anyone would like updates on this, you can email me at
unifoundry(a)unifoundry.com and I'll keep you posted on the latest
developments. Thanks for your interest!

There are lots of unclaimed fonts on
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Category:Font_wishlist
If you have the time and interest please do not block on Unifont. Our
packaging wishlist has other elements.
