proposal for make help chain-build text
by Patrice Dumas
Hello,
Here is a proposal for the result of make help for the chain-build
target, what I changed relates with : and prallel builds:
chain-build Build current package in order with
other packages
example: make chain-build CHAIN='libwidget libgizmo'
The current package is added to the end of the CHAIN list.
Colons (:) can be used in the CHAIN parameter to define
parallely built package groups.
Packages in a single group will be built in parallel,
and all packages in a group must build successfully and
populate the repository before the next group will begin building.
For example
make chain-build CHAIN='libwidget libaselib : libgizmo
:'
will cause libwidget and libaselib to be build in parallel,
followed by libgizmo and then the current directory package.
If no groups are defined, packages will be built sequentially.

Evolution junk failures
by Mike Chambers
On an F9 system upgraded to Rawhide, it seems evolution shows (not sure
if all the time, or at certain times/conditions) a "Check junk mail"
failed message when emails arrive. And this worked just fine on F9,
using bogofilter as my spam program.
Also, (not sure this is evo though), as I am typing this, I can see the
whole email (body and signature) flashing in 2-3 different places on my
screen in the body of the email. Below is a URL with a screenshot of
it....
http://www.miketc.net/Screenshot.png
Any ideas?

Boot speedup with readahead
by Harald Hoyer
Hello fellow Fedora developers,
recently readahead was modified to adapt to system file changes and to start very early in the boot process
via upstart.
I would like to encourage you to test readahead-1.4.5-3.fc10 from rawhide (even possible on F9), which I built
some minutes ago. It may take a day to reach your local mirror.
# yum --enablerepo=rawhide install readahead
or
# yum --enablerepo=rawhide update readahead
With the next reboot readahead-collector runs and collects the information which files are used during the
boot process. The next reboot then, readahead read ahead those files and the boot process (from init start to
gdm login screen) should be approx. 10% faster.
Hope it speeds up your boot process a little bit. Please report any changes in your boot time (can be measured
with a stop clock or bootchart).
You can modify /etc/sysconfig/readahead to turn readahead on/off.

Please recompile GStreamer codecs -- AKA: how to make things just work with PackageKit
by Richard Hughes
I've been playing with the new code in PackageKit for codec installing
with external repos. It was a little disappointed to find some external
repos have not recompiled packages with a new gstreamer-devel and rpm.
This means packages display this:
[hughsie@localhost docs]$ rpm -qp /home/hughsie/gstreamer-ffmpeg-0.10.4-1.rph10.x86_64.rpm --provides
libgstffmpeg.so()(64bit)
libgstpostproc.so()(64bit)
gstreamer-ffmpeg = 0.10.4-1.lvn10
rather than this:
[hughsie@localhost docs]$ rpm -qp --provides /home/hughsie/rpmbuild/RPMS/gstreamer-ffmpeg-0.10.4-1.rph10.x86_64.rpm
gstreamer0.10(decoder-application/gxf)()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10(decoder-application/mxf)()(64bit)
gstreamer0.10(decoder-application/ogg)()(64bit)
.. a million mode code strings...
libgstffmpeg.so()(64bit)
libgstpostproc.so()(64bit)
gstreamer-ffmpeg = 0.10.4-1.lvn10
All you need to do is recompile, and everything will be done
automatically. It would be disappointing to not have this fixed before
F10.
Thanks,
Richard.

rpmbuild post install checks
by Steve Grubb
Hi,
I have tarred up my post install build checks that found the /bin /sbin linked
to /usr problems. It can be downloaded from:
http://people.redhat.com/sgrubb/files/rpmbuild-checks.tar.gz
The tarball has installation instructions in the README file. If any test
fails, it stops the build and rpms are not written. I have about 10 checks
and would like to add more. I would also like to take any contributions that
can look for problems at build time. The intent is to find problems in local
builds before pushing it out to Koji for an official build.
Comments?

Do we care about /sbin /bin linked to /usr/lib ?
by Steve Grubb
Hi,
I wrote a utility that checks all apps in /bin & /sbin to see if they link
against anything in /usr. Is this a problem that we care about?
/bin/rpm uses something in /usr
/sbin/arping uses something in /usr
/sbin/audispd-zos-remote uses something in /usr
/sbin/audisp-prelude uses something in /usr
/sbin/audisp-remote uses something in /usr
/sbin/auditd uses something in /usr
/sbin/cifs.upcall uses something in /usr
/sbin/grubby uses something in /usr
/sbin/lsusb uses something in /usr
/sbin/nash uses something in /usr
/sbin/setkey uses something in /usr
/sbin/umount.hal uses something in /usr
This was not an everything install.

Cambridge (F-10) Beta release announcement
by Jesse Keating
Fedora 10 Beta: Cambridge's foundations are laid
Just on the heels of the Fedora Project's fifth anniversary, the Beta of
Fedora Linux version 10 (code-named Cambridge) is now available:
http://fedoraproject.org/get-prerelease
There is also a Beta contest! Test five things in the Beta that are
important to you as a user. If you find a bug *and* report it, you get
the free attention of a package maintainer on a problem personally
important to you!
https://bugzilla.redhat.com
Do your part to make Fedora 10 that much better.
Among the new, fun, and interesting features:
* New NetworkManager with connection sharing
* Improved printer handling
* Remote virtualization and easier virt storage
* Sectool, an auditing and security testing framework
* RPM 4.6, the first big RPM change in several years
... and more ...
* New version of PackageKit for managing software, with more fixes
and enhancements (which benefits all distributions)
* New version of PulseAudio (which benefits all distributions)
* Kernel 2.6.27, including better support for WiFi
* Better support for the EFI for Apple Macintosh hardware
* Faster graphical start-up by Plymouth, replacing the venerable
RHGB
* Better support for webcams through the hard work in kernel
2.6.27 (which benefits all distributions)
* New icon theme "Echo", to be completed with the theme graphic
"Solar" in the Fedora 10 release
* Gnome 2.24
* KDE 4.1
* Adding the NetBeans IDE
* Eclipse 3.4
* Automatic installation of multimedia codecs
* Better HDTV support in X.org
* "Sugar" graphical environment (from OLPC) available for use,
testing, and development
A more complete list and details of each new cited feature is available:

Running Xvfb during a package build -- good idea?
by Richard W.M. Jones
We have a package (mingw32-openssl) which has some tests that run
under Wine. Strictly speaking, running the tests isn't necessary, but
because it's such an important package I feel that we should run the
tests.
Anyhow, Wine needs an X server, although it doesn't really use it for
anything. To provide one, I'm using Xvfb like this:
BuildRequires: wine
BuildRequires: xorg-x11-server-Xvfb
#...
display=:21
Xvfb $display & xpid=$!
trap "kill -TERM $xpid ||:" EXIT
sleep 3
DISPLAY=$display
export DISPLAY
make -C test tests
This works, but there are two problems. Firstly there isn't a good
way to choose a free display number, so I'm just picking one at random
here. This assumes that port 6021 is free, also disallows any builds
that happen in parallel. Secondly, will Koji let me do such a thing
at all? Is there another / a better way?
Rich.

unfrozen repo somewhere?
by Patrice Dumas
Hello,
I understand why rawhide should be frozen at some points, but sometime
there is a package one really wants, that is built in koji, but not
available in rawhide because it is frozen. In my case, for example,
rpm-build is broken but aleady fixed. So maybe it would be worth having
a special repo that would not be enabled, but that would allow to have
the latest builds during a beta freeze. In my opinion this repo should
also be used for Matt rebuilds since there are alot of already fixed FTBS
in his reports due to the freeze, which is a bit annoying.

Fedora rawhide rebuild in mock status 2008-09-30 x86_64
by Matt Domsch
Fedora Rawhide-in-Mock Build Results for x86_64
This is not a full rebuild of everything, merely a rebuild of packages
failing to build over the last few weeks, using the newly-unfrozen
rawhide of 9/29/2008. Failures here will cause new bugzilla bugs to
be created, which will block the 'F10FTBFS' bug. My hope is that we
can resolve all these before the Fedora 10 Release Candidate.
76 of these failures are due to patch fuzz. Each of those should be
reviewed to ensure upstream has not already fixed the problem the
patch addressed, either by applying the patch or by fixing it in
another way. If the problem persists, please rebase the patch to the
current source code, so it applies without fuzz, and forward your
patch to the upstream package maintainer.
