fedora-release-rawhide, et. al.
by Bill Nottingham
Right now, we have the following:
F13 branched tree:
fedora-release - enabled - points to F13
fedora-release-rawhide - disabled - points to rawhide
Rawhide:
fedora-release - enabled - sets releasever to 14, ergo points to rawhide
fedora-release-rahwide - disabled - points to rawhide
This would imply that fedora-release-rawhide doesn't serve much purpose
*in* rawhide. So, I'm wondering if we might want to do this differently.
Proposal: don't ship fedora-release-rawhide at all. To move between
streams, run "yum --releasever <whatever> install/upgrade fedora-release"
Going over the various usage cases:
1) Release has not yet branched, want to switch, or use rawhide packges
Currently:
yum install fedora-release-rawhide
yum --enablerepo=rawhide ...
New:
yum --releasever=<next> ...
2) Release has branched; want to pull from never-frozen rawhide devel
stream.
Currently:
yum install fedora-release-rawhide
yum --enablerepo=rawhide ...
New:
yum --releasever=<next> ...
3) You're on rawhide, the release has branched, you want to go to the
stable release.
Currently:
If you don't have rawhide enabled, do nothing - this happens automatically.
If you do have rawhide enabled:
... you're kind of screwed.
New:
Do nothing - this happens automatically.
4) You're on rawhide, the release has branched, and you want to *stay*
on rawhide.
Currently:
If you're using fedora-release-rawhide to be on rawhide, do nothing.
If you're using fedora-release + MM:
yum install fedora-release-rawhide
yum --enablerepo=rawhide upgrade
New:
yum --releasever=<next> upgrade
Am I missing something? Do people think this would be better, or worse?

Bodhi hash collision?
by Jonathan Underwood
Hi,
I just logged into the bodhi web interface and clicked on "my
updates". In the list I see a recent package I pushed to testing -
shorewall-4.4.6-2.fc12. When I click on it, it takes me to a screen
for luckybackup-0.3.5-2.fc12. Something seems to have gone awry with
the hash generation or linking or something. I'd file a bug report but
I am not sure where the problem lies exactly. Any pointers?
Cheers,
Jonathan

RE: FESCo wants to ban direct stable pushes in Bodhi (urgent call forfeedback)
by Patrick Monnerat
Kevin Kofler wrote:

stable in Bodhi.
As you say, there are quite a lot of situations where direct stable
update is needed.
This proposal is probably inspired by a very few bad cases, like the
recent dnssec problem (among rare others).
Although disabling the feature will resolve such problems, it will bring
others, much more frequent:
- People test new packages only if they are involved with: they are bug
reporters, they are aware of a particular bug or a new package version,
or they watch the package because they wait for some precise fix.
- Normal users and most packagers NEVER test packages: they don't even
know their existence.
- People effectively testing packages and commenting bodhi for karma
bumping are very few.
- Many BZ reports are a 2-people conversation: the reporter and the
packager: even in the case the reporter positively comments testing in
bodhi, this is not enough to exhaust the default karma count.
- In the dnssec case mentionned above (sorry: this is an example, not an
attack!), the faulty package might have been promoted to stable without
testing even if stable push had been disabled. In such a case, how long
will it take to have a real fix for everyone ? Much longer than the 2
effective days needed by this real case, I bet.
In short: packagers push to stable because testing/feedback is not
efficient.
Rather than just disabling the feature, I would prefer "packager
education" and perhaps "tester education" too, like pushing guidelines,
for example.
- Making testing+feedback easier will probably provide encouragments in
pushing to test rather than to stable.
- Testing could be slightly improved by publishing new test packages and
the reason for them +(BZ link if some) on some easily accessible webpage
(plus an RSS feed, maybe). Of course, this would be efficient only if
the "bandwidth" of such an info source is reasonable.
- Bumping the karma according to a reply in BZ could also probably
improve testing feedback.
> If you can think of more, please post them! But even if you just agree
with me, please reply so the other FESCo members don't think it's just
me!
I think the current situation does not satisfy testing feedback
requirement and as a conclusion, I definitely give you my voice.

hdparm -B for netbooks
by Richard Z
Hi,
I have one of these netbooks that need "hdparm -B high_value" to avoid unhealthy
frequent head parking. From some archived mails I had the impression that it was
planned that gnome power manager and similar would take care of such issues - which
does not appear to happen in my case.
What is the state of this - is some package responsible for this or is it up to
the user to do it manualy?

default fedora-virt-server.ks
by Colin Walters
Hello internets,
I fairly strongly think we should have a default "Fedora Virt Server"
image. Rather than asking the internets to make it as I have in the
past, recently I needed to install one so I looked at what's out
there.
There is: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Server
But as far as I can tell have not produced any consumables (though I
hope some of the other stuff like NM/network work happened!) There is
also:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/AOS_Spin
However, I wasn't actually interested in "ultra minimal", and in any
case the AOS Spin has a few serious flaws:
* Disables SELinux and the firewall - this is a dealbreaker.
* Uses a root password by default (this is broken)
Cobbler also has various sample kickstarts, which share the above flaws.
So here's what I propose. We create a spin, hosted in
spin-kickstarts.ks, called "fedora-virt-server.ks", which simply
reflects @base from comps, plus openssh-server.
The goal of "Fedora Virt Server" is:
* A default configuration suitable for virtualized use (i.e. uses full
hard drive by default, etc)
* Fully automated installation - absolutely no questions from anaconda.
* By default set up for remote access, thus openssh-server, and the
.ks file helps you set up a public SSH key (and *not* a root
password).
I've attached my proposed file, and will commit to spin-kickstarts
unless there are any objections.
Basically the idea is that you can use this kickstart file to get
something you can log into remotely and bootstrap whatever else you
want, whether that's mock (as it is in my case) or some web
application frontend, etc.
I'm hoping other people can help maintain this =) But I think this
use case should be very important to Fedora, as it's very important
for prominent derived operating systems. We should ensure that Fedora
stays fairly minimal in this case, and use it to showcase any work on
the core operating system (i.e. not the desktop).
