kde-partitionmanager orphaned
by Robin Lee
kde-partitionmanager doesn't build with parted 3.0. And upstream seems far
away from a new release.

SRPMs for EPEL 5
by T.C. Hollingsworth
Do you need to do anything special to produce a SRPM that will mock
build on EPEL 5 on modern Fedoras?
I just tried to build two different SRPMS [1][2] that work fine on
F15-16 and EPEL6 and got different errors out of each:
DEBUG util.py:307: Executing command: ['rpm', '-q', '-a']
DEBUG util.py:257: error: cannot open Packages index using db3 -
Invalid argument (22)
DEBUG util.py:257: error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm
DEBUG util.py:347: Child returncode was: 0
DEBUG util.py:300: Executing command: ['rpm', '-Uvh', '--nodeps',
'/builddir/build/originals/nodejs-0.6.6-1.fc16.src.rpm']
DEBUG util.py:257: nodejs warning: user tc does
not exist - using root
DEBUG util.py:257: warning: group tc does not exist - using root
DEBUG util.py:257: ##################################################
DEBUG util.py:257: error: unpacking of archive failed on file
/builddir/build/SOURCES/macros.nodejs;4eebce4a: cpio: MD5 sum mismatch
DEBUG util.py:340: Child returncode was: 1
They both still have the BuildRoot and %clean sections so should be
fine for EL5 AFAIK.
Thanks!

I understand what you're trying to say Johann, but you do sound a little
contradictory!
I sense an attitude of "not my responsibility" here, and a wider problem with the
way that Linux is developed. Jared told me in this posting
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/devel/2011-December/160499.html that
Fedora have practically no sway in upstream development decisions, even those
that affect critical components such as glibc. Now you're telling me that when
you collectively make decisions about what goes into Fedora, you have no regard
for what the knock-on effect is for downstream, not even how that might impact RHEL.
This would seem to be a disjointed muddle. Perhaps you can begin to see the
benefit of using Solaris if one vendor can take full responsibility for the whole
thing, rather than trying to run away with as little responsibility as possible.
If a developer makes a change to glibc, he is *absolutely* going to affect RHEL.
Likewise, by your own admittance that F18+ or thereabouts will become RHEL7, if
a developer makes a change to Fedora, he is *absolutely* going to affect RHEL.
What benefit could there possibly be for the millions of end users of Linux by
upstream developers burying their heads in the sand or otherwise denying
responsibility for how their actions will affect downstream? This is the fabric
that makes Linux a success, and will be its downfall if it is not well managed.
<steps off soapbox ...>
Now, back to the original subject matter. Is backwards compatibility a good
thing, or a bad thing?
> If you cant prepare your infrastructure for these changes and you cant
> convince upstream then RHEL6 will be supported for years to come.
By your statement "if you can't prepare your infrastructure for these changes
..." it sounds to me like you're happy to be causing pain for system
administrators. Change is sometimes a necessity, yes, but change for the sake of
change is nothing but a pain. And in this case, and in my opinion, the nss_db
change in glibc was not required, it benefits no one, and will introduce pain for
no reason.
Best regards,
Mark.

Route Metric
by Alexander Bahoor
Greetings,
Route metric is a variable that a router uses to choose the best route to a destination. Depending on the routing protocol, the metric definition is different. What I'm trying to understand is how Linux defines the metric in the route output command.
For example when a Fedora laptop has two active interfaces, Ethernet and wifi, the metric in route output, is set to 1 for Ethernet and 2 for WiFi. Reading the man page on the route command, it says the metric is defined as hop counts to a destination. Based on the above observation, this is incorrect or incomplete. It definitely include the hop count, but how fedora came up with 1 and 2. Could it be just used these number arbitrarily to indicate to IP, that the Ethernet interface is the preferred path to use to send traffic, because it's speed is faster and more reliable?
Basically what I'm looking for is the definition of the metric defintion in Linux or Fedora. And if someone shed light on the windows definition that would be great.
Rgrds,
Alex

Thanks Josh, I've done that now too:
http://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2011-12/msg00036.html
But I think in Fedora perhaps you should consider the repercussions of this
change yourselves, and try to deal with the compatibility issues it raises. For
a start, perhaps you should reverse the decision to deprecate your separate
nss_db package, and continue to package nss_db separately using source from
http://sf.net/projects/nssdb.
If this isn't fixed now, in Fedora, then it's likely to cause more pain when it
finally reaches RHEL. I personally don't think that the glibc maintainers are
going to pay much attention to this (although I admit I might be wrong on that
account, perhaps I'm just impatient but I've had no acknowledgement from them yet
on the subject).
Best regards,
Mark.

Re: nss_db
by mark@proseconsulting.co.uk
I note from this posting:
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/devel/2011-July/153665.html
And this one:
http://sourceware.org/git/?p=glibc.git;a=commit;h=2666d441c2d8107b1987b86...
that the nss_db package has been deprecated, and that the new nss_db support in
glibc no longer uses Berkeley DB format.
This is a pity. I have a genuine requirement for Berkeley DB support.
Specifically, I need both Linux and Solaris clients using the same database file
presented over NFS. This is used for overriding UIDs, home directories and GIDs
on a per-NIS domain basis where multiple NIS domains have been imported into a
single Active Directory domain. We use the 'db' source in /etc/nsswitch.conf
ahead of 'ldap' so that users with clashing IDs can be successfully renumbered
when they log into different NIS domains.
Berkeley databases are architecture-independent, so all Linux and Solaris clients
can use the same db files. Moreover, I have forked the original version 2.2
nss_db with all the latest patches I could find and ported to Solaris at the URL
below. This version compiles ok on both Solaris 10 and RHEL 5.5 (no reason why
it shouldn't continue to compile on all versions of Linux that it previously did):
http://sf.net/projects/nssdb
Full details about this port can be found in this posting:
http://sourceware.org/ml/libc-help/2011-12/msg00001.html
By moving away from a Berkeley DB format, we're left in a position where Fedora
(and in the future RHEL) will not be compatible out-of-the-box with our NSS
database files. This will force us to use the nss_db fork above on RHEL7 in the
future, to maintain compatibility. This would be a shame, unless Red Hat
supported the above module.
Perhaps there is a better solution here? Can the nss_db fork above be included
as an option in Fedora? Perhaps you can simply rename the module to something
other than libnss_db so that it doesn't clash with the new glibc module.
Although personally I wish that glibc renamed their version so that libnss_db
continues to be compatible with Berkeley DB, I'm not sure why it was considered
ok to break backwards compatibility and force users of nss_db to recreate their
databases to a format that was no longer cross-platform.
Opinions? Ideas?
Best regards,
Mark.

yp tools for LDAP users
by mark@proseconsulting.co.uk
Hi,
I've written a Perl script and some supporting configuration files that allow you
to continue to use ypwhich, ypcat and ypmatch in an environment where your NIS
maps are actually coming through LDAP with the RFC2307 schema. Your requests are
converted into the appropriate ldapsearch queries on-the-fly, and the results
converted back to the expected format:
http://sf.net/projects/yp2ldap
The arguments and output from my replacement tools are designed to be fully
compatible with the NIS originals.
This is useful for us as it means our legacy scripts that use the yp tools can
continue to be used in an LDAP environment with no changes required.
Are you interested in including this functionality in Fedora? I've had one
request for this already.
Best regards,
Mark.
